Match of the Day

Two of the best attacks in the Premier League square off against each other in our feature game. Arsenal travel to Villa Park to keep their European qualification alive and bounce back from their defeat to Liverpool. Aston Villa’s recent form has seen them climb out of the danger zone, and they are an outside shout for one of the European competitions themselves.

About the Game:

The host’s decision to appoint Steven Gerrard as manager could be the best decision they have made as a club as the former Liverpool man has transformed the club both on and off the pitch. He has brought in some key players and changed their style of play into one of the best-attacking sides.

Villa took all six points from Arsenal last season but lost the reverse of this fixture 3-1 in October last year. However, it was a very different Villa back then, and this rebooted team have shown they can beat anyone on their day. However, they lost to West Ham last week, which ended a three-game winning streak with nine goals without conceding. They sit comfortably in the league at 9th, twelve points away from European football, but more importantly, twelve away from the relegation spots.

Philippe Coutinho has been a revolutionary signing yielding four goals and three assists in nine appearances. Jacob Ramsey is benefiting from the mentorship of the Brazilian, and Ramsey has seven-goal involvements (six goals, one assist).

Marvelous Nakamba is the only player sidelined with injury. Therefore, they have the availability of Danny Ings, who has three assists and one goal, while Ollie Watkins has two in four. Watkins has scored three in three against Arsenal, and it could be worth a side bet on him making it four in four. Villa will directly input the European qualification spots, facing Arsenal, Wolves, Spurs, and Liverpool.

Bet on Aston Villa v Arsenal at bet365

Arsenal is flying high with their only two defeats in the last twelve games was against Chelsea and the defeat to Liverpool in midweek. Mikel Arteta’s transformation of the London side is quite incredible, building a youthful squad and all credit to the board for giving the young manager time. They are in a solid position to qualify for Europe but have to take advantage of their games in hand to keep pace in their qualification race. The defence has been the team’s strength managing twelve clean sheets after conceding nine in the first three looks as solid as they have never been.

Their five consecutive wins ended with a 2 – 0 defeat to Liverpool. Exceptional performances from the team collectively and some tremendous individual flashes of brilliance from the attackers. Bakayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe have produced twenty four-goal involvements. The Gunners are one point above Manchester United with two games in hand.

Lacazette has nine-goal involvements in the last twelve games. Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka have been the unsung heroes in the Gunners team. They have been doing all the dirty work defensively and efficiently to the attack. Martin Odegaard is filling the number ten role with glimpses of Mesut Ozil in his game.

The Gunners still have some tough football fixtures to play with Manchester United, West Ham, Chelsea, and Spurs still to play. However, another way of looking at it is that they are masters of their European destiny, avoid defeat in these critical games, and Europe would seem a certainty. Only Tomiyasu is a doubt for the Villa game as he is yet to recover from a calf injury fully.

Prediction: Arsenal to win. Look for live betting odds depending on the h/t score.

Rest of the Premier League Games

  • Fri 18 Mar, 20:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/10 D: 5/2 A: 12/5

About the Game:

Back to back victories against Wolves and Watford and keeping clean sheets in these games have re-ignited Wolves’ European dream. The impressive run comes on the back of three consecutive defeats (Arsenal, West Ham and Crystal Palace). Bruno Lage has been demanding more from his side as any result other than a win will see their progress slip away. They have to make Molineux their fortress, having alternated results winning four, drawing two, and losing three. Friday nights are great nights for the Wolves pack, winning four and drawing one of the last five contests keeping four shutouts, including a 1 – 0 victory against their visitors. Raul Jimenez produces the magic for the home side with six goals and three assists. Their defence has been their stronghold, the best outside the top three, conceding just twenty-three goals this season. In the Both Teams to Score market, Wolves have the lowest percentage rate in the whole division.

Leeds United has not won against Wolves in the last six games between the two (losing five, drawing one), so they may not be ideal opposition for the Yorkshire club struggling in the league. However, Jesse March finally got his era underway, winning at the third time of asking, 2 – 1 against Norwich City. The much-needed victory ended a run of six straight defeats and a run of eight games without a win. Joe Gelhardt finally got his chance after being starved game time under Marcelo Bielsa rewarded the American manager with his first goal deep into extra time. Leeds United now sit four points safe from the drop, motivated by the return of their top gun Patrick Bamford to marshal their survival. Raphinha provided an assist in the last match has consistently delivered exceptional performances for the Whites, topping their goal tally with nine and assist count with three.

Prediction: Wolves to win.

Leicester v Brentford

  • Venue: King Power Stadium
  • Sun 20 Mar, 14:00
  • Referee: Darren England
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/10 D: 5/2 A: 5/2

About the Game:

After an eight-month absence, Leicester’s Wesley Forfana celebrated returning to the lineup by scoring the vital goal in their midweek Europa Conference League clash against French outfit Rennes. The Foxes were carrying a 2 – 0 advantage to France and the 2-1 defeat means they progress to the Europa Conference League quarter-finals. And European competition provides the best route to play in Europe next season as they are in the bottom half fifteen points from sixth-place West Ham, although they have three games in hand. The Foxes have won all of their last five games against promoted sides, including three this season. However, Brendan Rodgers was outdone by set-pieces once again conceding from a corner kick and the penalty spot against Arsenal. Jamie Vardy came back from injury with a bang leading his side to two league victories, and was a notable absentee in the defeat to Arsenal. In the last five games in all competitions, Harvey Barnes has had four-goal involvements (two goals, two assists).

Brentford is benefiting from their explosive start of the season and can thank those early results as otherwise, they’d be in the relegation zone. The Bees have won two Premier League matches as many as they did in the last fourteen games combined, losing ten and drawing two. Ivan Toney’s return from injury has propelled the team away from the relegation struggle where they were seemingly heading. The 26-year-old has scored seven goals in the last five league games, having netted four from the first nineteen. Brentford has scored a league-high fifty per cent of their goals from set-piece situations. Sixteen of their thirty-two have come from dead-balls. This stat bodes well against a Leicester side that has conceded a competition high 47% of their league goals from dead balls (twenty-one of the forty-five). Thomas Frank are eight points from safety, which is all that matters for the team to earn another season in the top flight would be an incredible achievement for the team.

Prediction: A draw.

Tottenham v West Ham
Tottenham Form Guide LDWWD
West Ham United Form Guide LLLDD
  • Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Sun 20 Mar, 16:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 18/25 D: 14/5 A: 15/4

About the Game:

The top four battle has intensified with Tottenham and West Ham deeply embroiled in the scramble for the last Champions League spot. Harry Kane has bagged eight goals in the six home games against West Ham, the highest number of goals he has managed against a specific opponent. Tottenham’s biggest problem is consistency, with the club alternating between wins and defeats. Their primary objective is to qualify for Europe, which is a realistic and achievable quest on paper. Kane has hit top form after a shaky start and has scored four goals in the last three games and could continue his impressive record against the Hammers.

West Ham has won two of the last four encounters with Spurs, both victories coming at home. However, their away form against their London rivals is poor, losing ten and drawing seven. Pablo Fornals scored the winner against Aston Villa and was his sixth goal Premier League goal, making this his best goalscoring campaign. The 2 – 1 victory against Villa ended a three-game losing streak that saw them knocked out of the FA Cup and lose in the first leg against Sevilla. However, a fantastic performance in the second leg saw them win 2-0 after extra-time. Ukrainian Andriy Yarmolenko( scoring the vital goal in emotional circumstances. The 32-year-old has scored two in two. The teams are level on points, but Spurs have a game in hand, meaning a defeat for the travelling side will effectively cost them six points. However, it wouldn’t be wise to rule them out with spirits so high.

Prediction: Tottenham to win.
