Starting life as a greyhound trainer, Roy came into sports journalism by accident when asked by the Racing Post newspaper to write of his experiences of racing greyhounds in America during the mid-90s. This led to him editing the Greyhound Monthly Magazine and making several friends and acquaintances within the gambling industry.
These contacts would serve him well. When he became a familiar face on Sky Sports by winning two televised poker tournaments – plus finishing second in the globally televised World Heads-Up Championship – he had little difficulty in attaining sponsorship in that field.
Over the years he has endorsed brands such as Betfair, Ladbrokes, and BetVictor at the poker tables. Time spent playing poker gradually morphed into a career commentating on poker and, eventually horse racing, writing columns for specialist publications.
But time does not stand still, and the Irish-based gambler turned an interest in Formula 1 into a regular betting feature on Sky Sports ‘At The Races’ channel in 2012. Sharing his analytical viewpoints on that sport, his opinions on betting sports as diverse as Darts, Cycling, and Horse Racing are now much sought after.
