To find the best Maestro betting sites, we have asked the same questions as we do with every other payment method we review. Questions like, “what is the minimum amount I can deposit?”, “What is the processing time to get my winnings?”, “Is there a minimum and maximum I can withdraw?” and to get the best value online, “If I use Maestro, can I take advantage of the bookmaker’s welcome offers? We ask all the questions you can think of, and probably a few you didn’t.

Essential Information That Every Punter Needs

  It’s only natural to want to get the best deal in life, and some payment methods offer better value for money than others. If you are successful with your betting, the last thing you want is to see those winnings reduced due to charges. And if you are charged, how much are those charges? Another thing to consider is how long it takes to get your winnings and if one payment method pays out much quicker than another, would that be a deciding factor for you? It is the cost and speed of payment that is the focus for our next section.

Fees and Processing Times

In this section, we compare the fees and processing time for both deposits and withdrawals at our four chosen betting sites that accept Maestro. Sometimes an online bookmaker clearly shows the minimum and maximum deposit limits and processing times, others, however, have this information in their terms and conditions. We’ve done all the legwork for you, and you can see the results in the table below;

Operator Processing Time Limits min/max Fees
Instant £5 – £99,999

The Pros and Cons of Using Betting Sites that Accept Maestro

There are numerous benefits of using Maestro betting sites with speed being one of the most obvious, once your card details are entered at bookie, topping up your account takes seconds. This process can take longer at other payment providers. Another highlight is the lack of any charges for both depositing and withdrawing funds, Maestro is free of charges for consumer customers. Maestro customers will also be able to take advantage of new customer offers such as matched deposits and free bets, often Skrill and Neteller customers, as well as other payment options, are excluded from these promotional deals.

A table listing the pros and cons of Maestro

As you can see from the table above, the positives do outweigh the negatives but as with Mastercard, it’s not perfect.

While there are many benefits of using the best Maestro betting sites, there are some areas in which alternative options are better. As it is a debit card, the Consumer Credit Act of 2006 doesn’t apply to this card as it does with Mastercard or Visa debit cards. Although it is highly unlikely you will encounter a problem, the level of protection does depend on the card issuer. Another area in which e-wallets have an advantage is the number of times you need to share your financial information with third parties, with PayPal for example, you could open five bookmaker accounts by sharing your details with just PayPal. The same process for Maestro would mean sharing your card details with five different bookmakers.

Depositing Funds with Maestro Betting Sites

  Funding your sports betting account using a Maestro card is easy to do and can be completed in little over the time it will take you to read this section. As your card details are securely stored with the bookmaker, the process is quick and all you’ll need to do is decide how much you wish to deposit and enter your security code to complete the transaction. To show this, let’s look at the three stages;

Step One: Log in to Your Bookmaker Account

A lock and log in sign. The first thing you need to do is log-in to your online sports betting site. If you don’t already have an account, you could use one of our recommended sites we feature on these pages.

If you already have an online sports betting site account, log-in and access the ‘My Account’ section. This can be called different things at different bookmakers, but they are all similar.

Step Two: Select Debit Card

The Maestro sign and select card. Once you logged into your account, you need to access the bookmaker’s banking options. There you will see an option to view your balance, transfer money from a sportsbook to a casino account, withdraw and cancel withdrawal. You will also see an option to deposit, select that option. From the drop-down section, you will see a list of payment options. As we will be using a Maestro card, choose the option that says Debit card.

Step Three: Enter your Maestro Card Details

A tick sign and add card. All that is required now is to select ‘add new card’. If you are on a tablet or mobile device, some bookmakers, allow you to use the device’s camera to scan your card. This method is the easiest way to add a card as the fields will automatically populate, all you need to do is enter the three-digit CSV code that is located under the signature strip on the reverse of your card.

If you are unable to use the scan facility, it’s still a straightforward process, complete the fields with your card number, expiry date, and the CSV code and select add card. This card will be securely stored with the bookmaker, unless you decide to remove it.

Withdraw Winnings – An Easy Process

The process to add a Maestro card to your online sports betting site is a straightforward process and as all your card details are stored at the bookmaker, so is making a withdrawal from your betting account. The main thing to remember is that although making a payment is instant, the same is not true for a withdrawal request, it can take up to five working days for the funds to reach your account. The working days is important here, during public holidays there can be quite a delay before the funds are available. Let’s visit the steps you need to take to request your funds;

How to withdraw from Maestro in three steps

As you’ve seen, requesting a withdrawal is an easy process and shouldn’t take more than a minute or so to complete. Log-In to your bookmaker account, select the banking section, then select the withdraw option. Your card details should already be present but if not, or you have more than one card linked with the bookie, there will be a drop-down menu for you to select the correct card that you wish to use. Confirm that the card details are correct and enter the amount you wish to withdraw, enter your password and press the withdraw button. It really is that easy, within 1-5 working days (depending on the bookmaker) the funds will become available in your account that is linked to your card. It’s worth noting that due to anti-money laundering rules, you may be restricted to which card you can use to withdraw on.

Security of Maestro Gambling Sites

Maestro works on the same infrastructure as parent company Mastercard which means transaction are processed on a peer-to-peer network rather than information being processed at data centres as is the case with rivals like Visa. Maestro believes this system makes their platform more secure than their rivals as an isolated incident is unlikely to have an impact on the whole network.

Maestro also employs Securecode to keep you safe. Use a betting sites that accept Maestro for the first time and you will receive a text message with a unique code. Unless the correct code is entered, the payment will not be processed. They also check each and every transaction, checking where your card is used and how it is used, if your card is used to buy something that doesn’t fit with your usual pattern of spending, the anti-fraud team may call you to check it is legitimate.

The Maestro card started life in the UK in 1988 under the branding of the Switch debit card and was issued by Midland Bank (now HSBC), National Westminster Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland. In 2002, the Switch brand merged with Maestro which is part of the Mastercard group. Although cards globally used the Mastercard infrastructure, transactions in the UK were still handled by the Switch network until it was fully integrated in 2011.

The last decade has seen a decline in Maestro cards being issued in the UK. Online bank First Direct and High Street giant HSBC stopped issuing cards in 2009 and was quickly followed by Clydesdale Bank and Yorkshire Bank.

When in 2015 the Royal Bank of Scotland Group which includes NatWest, Coutts and Ulster Bank brands moved to Visa debit cards, only a few independent banks still issued Maestro cards. And while parent company Mastercard have seen their market share grow to 45% with 767 million, it is thought that less than 1% of these are Maestro cards. How does Maestro Compare to Other Alternatives?

Even just a few short years ago, there was very little choice in how you could fund your online sports betting sites. Debit, bank transfers, PayPal and cheques were the main choices to deposit. Today however, the consumer has so much choice, especially with new players such as Apple Pay. In this section we compare the best Maestro betting sites with arguably their biggest rival, PayPal.

If you need just one payment method and want to use it on as many online betting sites as possible, then Maestro wins hands down. As part of the Mastercard group, it shares the same infrastructure and is accepted at a wide variety of sites. Although some newer players don’t accept this payment method, that number is a lot lower than that of PayPal. This is also true with bookmaker’s promotions, Maestro users will be eligible for most if not all new customer offers, whereas some bookies bar PayPal payments for welcome deals.

Security is an arena that PayPal does well, as you only share your details once, even if you sign up for many betting sites. Security experts say that the more often we disclose our details, the chances of a breach do increase. This is reduced due to Maestro’s state of the art technology, but it is worth considering if you intend using more than one bookmaker.

Speed of withdrawal is another plus for PayPal, some operators will fund your PayPal site in a matter of hours. For Maestro gambling sites this could take over a week when we are lucky enough to have bank holidays.

Betting with Maestro – Mastercard Assurance

The chances are that if you own a Maestro card it is linked to a foreign bank account as few, if any, UK banks have issued the card for many years. However, this means the card is perfect for people who work or live in the UK from abroad. The card offers all the security of Mastercard and is accepted in most online betting sites making it a great online betting companion.
