Big Spending Chelsea Fire Blanks Against Fulham

The January transfer window was dominated by one team, Chelsea, who spent over £300m. Yet despite this incredible level of spending, they struggled against Fulham, only managing a 0-0 draw with their London neighbours.

Chelsea’s big-money signing, Enzo Fernandez, made his debut for the club on Friday, and the £107m acquisition from Benfica showed glimpses of his potential. The midfielder was highly involved in the first half, recording the most touches and tackles of any player on the pitch. However, despite Fernandez’s positive impact, Chelsea struggled to find the back of the net and managed just three shots on target in the 90 minutes.

Fulham proved to be a stern test for the Blues, putting in a disciplined defensive performance while posing a threat in attack. As a result, the Cottagers deservedly took a point from the match, moving up to 6th in the Premier League table.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, their recent additions have not solved their long-standing issue in front of the goal. The Blues have scored just two goals in their last six matches, highlighting the need for improvement if they hope to climb the table. If Chelsea wants to achieve their goals this season, they will need to improve their finishing in the final third. The bookmakers will have enjoyed the result, as draws are usually good news. The draw was priced at 313/100 with bet365. A Chelsea win was available at 3/5 pre-game, and a Fulham win at almost 5/1 (493/100).

League Leaders Beaten by Dyche’s Everton

Everton secured a historic victory on Saturday, as Sean Dyche’s first game in charge of the Toffees resulted in a 1-0 win over Premier League leaders Arsenal. The winning goal came from James Tarkowski, who headed in from a corner to secure three valuable points for the home side.

Everton’s star striker, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, had several opportunities to double the lead but could not convert. Despite their missed chances, Everton deserved the victory, outfighting and outworking the previously dominant Arsenal. However, the Gunners struggled to find their rhythm and could not break down a stubborn Everton defence.

The result was a significant setback for Arsenal, who had previously been sweeping aside almost all opponents. Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka had presentable chances but were unable to convert. Everton moved out of the relegation zone with the result, albeit for just a few hours, with their first victory in 11 games, providing a much-needed boost to the club’s season. Amadou Onana was named player of the match for his tireless work rate and crucial tackles.

Football betting fans who backed Everton saw a decent return as the Toffees were very much the underdogs at 173/25. Arsenal had only previously lost one Premier League match (Manchester United at Old Trafford). The draw was priced at 83/25, and Arsenal was available at 47/100.

Wolves Maul Sorry Liverpool

Wolves pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday, defeating Liverpool 3-0 in a Premier League match.

Craig Dawson, making his debut for the club, got Wolves off to the perfect start by scoring just five minutes into the game. Seven minutes later, Wolves doubled their lead and put Liverpool in a difficult position. The Reds struggled to get going in the first half and could not mount a comeback before the break.

Despite improving in the second half, Liverpool could not find the back of the net. The defeat leaves them 10th in the Premier League table, while Wolves move out of the relegation zone and into 15th.

Wolves manager, Julen Lopetegui, was quick to downplay the victory, saying that his side has not achieved anything yet. However, the win will give the club a chance to pull clear of trouble and avoid a potential relegation battle. The victory also highlights the excellent work Lopetegui has done since November, turning the team’s performance. Wolves looked doomed in October, losing five out of their six fixtures. Although they have lost a further four since October, they have won three and drawn two.

The season has been a disappointment for Liverpool, starting the day 21 points off the top of the table and without a win in the Premier League in 2023. The defeat will only add to the growing frustration among fans, who will be hoping for a significant improvement in the team’s form.

Liverpool had been 23/25 favourites to win the game. Wolves were priced at 149/50, with the draw available at 277/100.

Red Devils Win Despite Casemiro Red Card

Manchester United secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in a thrilling Premier League match at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Will Hughes was judged to have handled the ball in the box. Marcus Rashford added a second for United, taking his tally to 11 goals since the World Cup.

Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, expressed his disappointment in the officials’ handling of the game against Crystal Palace. Despite the 20-man brawl that erupted on the field, only one player was sent off – midfielder Casemiro – following a VAR review for violent conduct.

Ten Hag stated that Casemiro was merely protecting a teammate, and if the Brazilian was deemed deserving of a red card, many others involved in the scuffle should have been as well. The incident started with a challenge on Antony by Palace’s Jeffrey Schlupp and escalated into a full-blown melee. TV footage showed that Jordan Ayew engaged in similar behaviour towards Fred, yet no punishment was given.

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira was pleased with his side’s character displayed during the game but stated that they need to score more goals to secure wins. He didn’t witness the altercation leading to Casemiro’s dismissal but believes that the United player was the instigator.

The win moves United to third in the league table, while Palace remains 12th. Rashford’s goals and Fred’s improved performance will be critical for United if they are to maintain their push for a top-four finish. For Palace, their form has been poor in recent weeks, with only five points from their last eight games.

Honours Even Between the United Namesakes

Stalemate at St. James’ Park as Newcastle United and West Ham United shared the spoils in a tightly contested Premier League encounter which ended 1-1. The home side’s Callum Wilson broke the deadlock, capitalizing on a well-placed pass from Sean Longstaff. However, West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta levelled the score with a clinical finish from close range. Both teams had opportunities to win, but the final score remained 1-1.

Newcastle holds onto fourth place in the league table with 40 points, while West Ham sits just above the drop zone in 16th. New Magpies signing, Anthony Gordon, made his debut off the bench, impressing fans with his potential. Although supporters will be less pleased with his conduct off the pitch as he was pictured behind the wheel of a car just a week after receiving a driving ban.

The Hammers put up a battling display despite losing 7 of their last ten away matches.

Nayef Aguerd stood out for West Ham and was named player of the match.

Leicester OutFox the Villains

Leicester City claimed a crucial victory over Aston Villa in an intense Premier League match that ended 2-4 in favour of the visitors. The Foxes’ newest addition, Tete, made a stunning debut, scoring a goal that helped secure the three points. Manager Brendan Rodgers was effusive in his praise for Tete, hailing him as the missing piece in Leicester’s attacking Arsenal. The addition of Tete gave the Foxes much-needed balance on the wings and provided ample space for their midfield to operate.

The match saw Leicester fall behind twice in the first half, but the team rallied to stage a comeback and claim the victory. James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho also contributed goals to the final scoreline.

The recent additions to the Leicester squad made a noticeable impact, helping the team fend off Villa’s second-half surge. Despite putting up a valiant effort and having 19 shots on goal, errors proved to be costly for Villa, who will look to bounce back in their next match. Currently sitting 11th in the league table, Villa still has a chance at securing a European place in the future, as they are six points shy of the Europa Conference League.

Forest Pile Pressure on Leeds

In a decisive showdown at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest emerged victorious against a struggling Leeds United side, with young sensation Brennan Johnson netting the decisive goal. The triumph catapults Forest up the table, securing a six-point cushion from the drop zone and elevating them to a comfortable 13th place.

Leeds, meanwhile, remains mired in a winless league streak, stretching seven games and residing 17th in the standings. The Yorkshire club squandered numerous opportunities in the first half, with their attacking prowess waning in the match’s latter stages.

Newcomer Keytor Navas, on loan from Paris St-Germain, played a crucial role between the sticks for Forest, making vital saves on his debut to preserve the clean sheet. Keylor Navas was named the best male CONCACAF player of the decade (2011-2020). He has won several awards for his performances, including three consecutive CONCACAF Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year Awards and the 2017-18 UEFA Club Football Award for best UEFA goalkeeper.

Navas has played for several clubs, including Saprissa, Albacete, Levante, and Real Madrid, where he won 12 titles, including three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles. In addition, he has made over 100 appearances for the Costa Rican national team and has represented the country at several World Cups and CONCACAF Gold Cups.

In other Premier League games, Brighton continued their remarkable run with a 1-0 win against Bournemouth, and Brentford hammered Southampton 3-0.

Manchester City failed to take advantage of Arsenal’s loss and was beaten by Tottenham 1-0. Harry Kane scored the vital goal, becoming Tottenham’s all-time top scorer. However, things became even worse for the defending champions today, as the Premier League has charged them over financial irregularities. We’ll bring you more details about these charges later in the week.
