Ecuador v Senegal World Cup

The La Tri’s established themselves as a side that can grind out results against the top sides, winning against; Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay, as well as draws against Argentina and Brazil. They set themselves in a solid place to qualify with a win in the tournament’s opening game against hosts Qatar. In their second game, they pulled off a surprise, drawing 1-1 with the group favourites, the Netherlands. Ecuador should perform well, realising they are just one step close to their best-ever performance at the 2006 World Cup (Round of sixteen).

The absence of Sadio Mane in the Senegal team vividly shows as they lacked creativity in the 2-0 defeat against the Netherlands but did look set for an unlikely draw before two late goals gave the Dutch a 2-0 win. However, they performed much better in the second game, beating the hosts Qatar 3-1. The Lions of Teranga have shown their worth as the African Champions. Still, they have to convert their performance into goals and points or get eliminated as the best-performing African side.

Full-Time Result

Match Result Betting
Ecuador Win Draw Sengal Win
11/8 11/5 11/5

Senegal, at 11/5 with bet365 has been the more convincing of the two sides, but Ecuador has a better and proven attack and is the bookie’s favourite at 11/8. A draw (11/5) is improbable as we think both sides will take a direct approach to this game, favouring a win for either side over a tie.

The South Americans are unbeaten in the last six games, winning three, their opening match in the World Cup against Qatar (2 – 0) (Nigeria 1 – 0, Cape Verde 1 – 0) and drawing four, Japan 0 – 0, Mexico 0 – 0, Saudi Arabia 0 – 0 and 1-1 against the Netherlands on match day 2.

Senegal has won four (Liberia 3 – 0, Guinea 1 – 0, and Bolivia 2 – 0), and Qatar on match day 2. They have drawn one (Iran 1 – 1) and lost three (Liberia 2 – 1 and Guinea on penalties after a 1 – 1 draw). Their most recent defeat was a 2 – 0 loss to the Netherlands in their opening game.

Over/Under Market

Match Result Betting
Over 2.5 Goals Under 2.5 Goals
13/10 8/13

The Bookies favour a low-scoring encounter, with bet365 offering 8/13 in the Under market. That’s understandable, with recent results showing that Senegal had just three of their last seven games and Ecuador seeing none of their seven games having Over 2/5.

Players to watch – Ecuador:

Moises Caicedo is a twenty-one midfielder who plays for Premier League outfit Brighton and has established himself as a regular starter for both the Seagulls and the Ecuador team. Caicedo is appreciated for his defensive exploits and showed great promise in the attacking side in the qualifiers. He scored twice and provided four assists. He is the most in-form player in the team, playing at the highest level of European football. His tendency to try to dominate the game could be essential if they progress to the knockout, having already delivered in the opening win against Qatar.

Players to watch – Senegal:

In the absence of Sadio Mane, Ismaila Sarr could inspire, cutting in from the left with sufficient experience in the Premier League. The maestro has recovered from a relegation year with Watford, where he netted just five goals to sparkle in the Championship with six goals and six assists this campaign. A fierce attacker brave enough to challenge the opposition should provide a direct approach to get goals, as we have seen them perform well in their game already.

Match Prediction: Ecuador 0 – 2 Senegal

Senegal is one of the best performers, with their display against the Netherlands one of the most iconic in this edition. However, their failure in front of goal, especially since they are without their best-attacking threat, Sadio Mane, will haunt the African Champions if they fail to qualify for the knockout phase. Ecuador will provide an equal threat, but we foresee Senegal coming out on top.
