IBIA Reports Suspicious Betting Surge

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) has reported a surge in suspicious betting alerts, which rose by 14% from the previous year. Tennis and football remain the top sports that attract the most alerts, with 268 cases reported in 2022, surpassing the 230-case average from 2019 to 2021.

According to the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) there has been a sharp increase in the number of alerts related to suspicious gambling.

In the last quarter of the year, there were 50 alerts, bringing the total alerts for each quarter to 90, 80, and 48, respectively. The warnings covered 14 sports across 61 countries, with Europe reporting the most at 126, followed by Asia with 51 and North America with 22.

Tennis alone accounted for 102 alerts, a 27% increase from 2021, while football had 67 warnings. In addition, most tennis alerts were forwarded to the International Tennis Integrity Agency as intelligence reports, while 15% of all football betting alerts came from India.

Despite the increase in alerts, the CEO of IBIA, Khalid Ali, highlighted the association’s successful efforts in identifying and penalising corruption through data and intelligence.

The organisation also provides its members with alerts and intelligence reports on suspicious betting activities, which helps them make informed decisions and take appropriate measures to prevent corruption.

In addition to its monitoring and reporting activities, IBIA also advocates for responsible betting practices and encourages transparency and cooperation between its members and other stakeholders in the industry. The organisation’s CEO, Khalid Ali, has emphasised the importance of IBIA’s protective shield in identifying and penalising corruption and has highlighted the successful prosecutions that have been made based on IBIA data.

Meanwhile, Starlizard Integrity Services (SIS), run by former professional gambler Tony Bloom, assessed 144 football matches as suspicious globally, with 48 of them taking place in top-level domestic competitions. The number of suspicious youth matches also rose from one in 2021 to ten in 2022.
