Bettors Unimpressed as Trump Announces Presidential Bid

Donald Trump is facing a huge battle to be the Republican candidate contesting the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election according to the early betting. The 76-year-old confirmed his bid to retake the White House on Tuesday night.

“In order to make America great and glorious again, I am tonight announcing my candidacy for President of the United States,” Trump said from the ballroom of his private Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida.

The former President has found himself in the firing line over the past week and was blamed for underwhelming Republican gains at the midterm elections. Ron DeSantis meanwhile bucked the trend as he was re-elected Governor of Florida by a landslide in an apparent endorsement of his Presidential credentials.

Political and election betting sites make DeSantis the marginal favorite in the race for the Republican nomination. The former U.S. Navy SEAL – 32 years younger than Trump – is top-priced +125. Bet365 is offering odds of +150 about his rival.

Former Vice President, Mike Pence’s odds have also lengthened. He is now +1600 to lead his party to the ballot box, as is the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley. Former CIA Director Mike Pompeo is +4000 at bet365, and Tim Scott – one of eleven African-Americans to have served in the U.S. Senate, and the first to serve in both chambers of Congress – is +5000.

DeSantis Is Favorite to Become the 47th U.S. President

In a huge price shift, DeSantis is now the favorite to win the 2024 Presidential Election. His odds have more than halved since the midterm election. +900 at the start of the year and +500 by the summer months, a Floridian of Italian descent, DeSantis is now the +225 to lead the most powerful nation on the planet.

Meanwhile, Trump’s odds of returning to power have drifted to +150 from +200 in the space of a few days. Nevertheless, bookmakers believe it will be a Republican that wins the next U.S. election scheduled to take place on November 5, 2024.

The latest U.S. Presidential Election betting sees the Grand Old Party trading at -150. The Democrats are +125, and the odds of an Independent taking control – presumably Bernie Sanders – is +2500.

Democrats Expected to Prove Most Popular

Joe Biden – who continues to state he is undecided about running for a second term – is +150 to lead the Democrats at the next election. Kamala Harris, the current and first female Vice President in history, follows on +500. California Governor Gavin Newsom is a point bigger at +600.

Biden – who turns 80 this week – is +450 to win the 2024 Presidential Election. Harris and Newsom can be backed individually at +1600. Interestingly, former First Lady Michelle Obama is +33000 to take control of the country for the Democrats.

Hillary Clinton – who took the popular vote but lost out on the electoral vote when losing the 2016 Presidential Election to Donald Trump – is also on the betting list. She is given a relatively dismissive +6600 quote.

Democrats Expected to Prove Most Popular

Elsewhere there are some interesting propositions within other U.S. political betting markets. Once again, at odds of -500, the Democrats are expected to attract the majority of the popular vote. The party garnered 81.28 million votes ahead of the Republicans’ 74.22 million votes at the last election.

2004 was the last time the Republican Party won the popular vote, and they are +300 to buck that trend in the next election. An absolute first would be a woman installed in the White House as President.
