Mansell took his first award in 1986. That year a blown tyre in the last race cost him the Formula One title in dramatic fashion. Six years later, the moustached Midlander finally clinched the F1 Championship and earned his second SPOTY crown to boot.

Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean captured the hearts of a nation when they skated to gold in the 1984 Winter Olympics. Later that year, they became the first (and so far, only) duo to win SPOTY – beating fellow Olympic gold medalist Seb Coe to the BBC award.
