How We Decided on the Best Bookies for the NHL

When choosing the top bookies for the NHL, there were a number of specific criteria that they had to perfomr well in, in order to do well in our ranking. You can find these in the box below.

In the following paragraphs we will go into more detail on these points and demonstrate how a bookie can perform well. Naturally, not all NHL betting sites excel in every category, but the bets generally have a good overall performance.

Why Payouts are Important

When playing with NHL bookmakers it is integral that they offer a good payout. Why is this important? Well, the higher the percentage, the higher amount you will receive if your bet wins. Some bookies lower the odds in order to save money, however, these are the ones you want to avoid. Luckily, our chose operators all offer a high level, which means you will never be left unsatisfied.

Best NHL Betting Offers

Most bookies don’t have dedicated offers to the NHL. Nevertheless, you can use all of their new customer betting offers and ongoing offers on this league. Some of the best ones can be found in the box below. They have been tried and tested and really perform the best overall.

The Live Betting Arena and Streaming Options

When you first start your gambling career, you will notice that live betting forms an integral aspect of the industry. This is no different with NHL betting. When choosing a site, you want one that has live coverage of NHL games and the very best also offer a live stream. Being able to watch a game progress as you bet on it live is something that every punter should have the opportunity to partake in.

Number of Markets Available

One of the final aspects we look at when betting on NHL is how many markets are available to play on. We don’t just want the typical ones that every site offers, we want more choice and the top bookmakers offer that. You can really tell the ones that care about their product with the variety on offer. In the following sections we’ll go more in-depth.

The Different Types of NHL Markets

In this day and age of sports betting, the amount of markets one can bet on is astounding. From the single match, to outright there is plenty to choose from. Gone are the days where the money line was enough, instead punters are searching for more. In the following sections we’ll highlight some of the most popular markets and bets and give you some correlating information on them too. You can use this knowledge going forward in order to place more astute bets.

Betting on Single Games

The most common market is that of the individual match. You are simply betting on one event, and usually one outcome. Within each game you have the opportunity to wager on various things, from the correct score, to the number of points and we’ll take about that more in the next paragraphs. In the box below, you can see the best bookie for NHL betting.

Full Time Result – Money Line Betting

One of the most common form of bets is the money line. It can either be a 2-way or a 3-way. The 2-way is where you choose the winner of the match outright (home or away), whereas the 3-way is more like the 1X2 bet found in football, as you either choose home, draw, or away. However, the 1X2 bet can only be placed as a regulation bet, as matches always go to overtime and a winner is ultimately decided. The box below shows the statistics regarding what is most likely to happen, thus, when placing a bet, it is a good idea to keep this in mind.

Even/Odd Market

Another fun bet can be predicting if a match ends with an odd or even amount of goals. Naturally, this is a lot more unpredictable than many of the other markets but is still a viable market. What’s more you can often go even deeper and predict the odd or even goals for the specific team. In the box below, you can see the average of how it worked out over a season and you see there’s not much disparity between the two fields, making this a very tricky wager.

Over/Under Betting and Stats

Another favourite is the over/under betting markets. It is similar to other sports, where you have to predict the number of goals scored in a game, and whether they will be over or under a certain threshold. For ice hockey this is generally set at over/under 5.5 goals, however depending on the game this can vary, from 4.5 all the way up to 7.5 goals. It’s a great little bet, and if you know your teams you can really exploit your knowledge to your advantage.

Outright/Antepost Betting on the NHL

Now let us move on to some longer-term bets or the so-called antepost wagers. These are the ones where you predict an event from the whole season and will only be paid out at the end of the season. Most fans enjoy these types of bets, however, be careful as they take a lot of foresight and luck to be successful. We will now go into detail on the most popular ones.

Stanley Cup Winner

NHL players on the ice One of the most famous trophies in the whole of sports is the Stanley Cup. It is the ultimate prize for every NHL team. That is why Stanley Cup betting is a very popular market. In essence, you choose who the outright winner will be. As the season progresses, odds will shorten as it becomes apparent who will be crowned champion. Nevertheless, due the play-off format of the NHL, it is not always necessarily the team with the best regular season record that wins.

The Best Regular Season Record

Two NHL players battling for the puck Perhaps an easier bet to predict is the team with the best regular season record. Basically, all this wager involves is choosing the team that will finish atop of their conference with the best record against all of the other 30 teams. As the results over a season aren’t as random as the playoffs, the best team usually finishes first here. Even so, predicting that at the start of the season still isn’t necessarily easy, and it pays off to do some in-depth research before choosing the squad to back.

League MVP

An ice hockey player One of our favourite sports betting wagers is choosing who will finish as the league’s most valuable player will be. The NHL is unique in that it has two awards, one for the regular season, and one for the playoffs. The regular season award is called the Hart Memorial Trophy, whereas the Conn Smythe Trophy is for the playoffs. Many famous players have won the awards, yet very few win both in the same season. In fact, only three have done so in the league’s entire history, so keep this in mind when placing your bet!

NHL Betting Strategy

There is no one infallible winning strategy when it comes to betting on NHL, yet there are number of things you can do in order to give you the ultimate chance at winning. Firstly, we recommend the study of rosters and form guides before you even start thinking about placing a bet.

The nature of the NHL is fast and always changing. Due to the number of games, players are often rested or even injured, and this can be detrimental to the outcome of a match. What’s more the form of a team often fluctuates throughout a season.

It is integral that you use all the information available to you before you place a bet, and only then can you be confident in your decision. Naturally, you will still need some luck to go with it too.

The NHL, or the National Hockey League, as it known is a professional ice hockey league based in North America. It is the most famous league of the sport, and currently has 31 teams that take part, although this figure is set to increase to 32 in 2021.

There are 24 teams in the USA and 7 in Canada. From 1942 to 1967 there were only six teams in the league, and these have been known ever since as the ‘Original Six’. They are great names of the sport, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, and the New York Rangers.

Each year, teams compete to win the famed Stanley Cup. The teams play in a regular season, from October to April and then a postseason is held. Two points are awarded for a win, and one for a loss in overtime. If you lose in regulation zero points are given.

During the course of a season a team plays 82 regular season matches. 41 at home, and 41 away. There are two conferences, the Eastern and Western. These are then divided into two divisions apiece. With an Atlantic, Metropolitan, Cental, and Pacific division.

The league is one of four major leagues in North America, with other sports baseball, basketball, and American football also taking in many fans. Nevertheless, Canadians have historically been the highest percentage of players, yet this is gradually changing with more Americans and Europeans joining the league.
