More of a fun bet than one that requires skill and analysis, you can bet on whether a hole in one will be scored at any point during the competition. Since this bet – like scoring a hole in one – is dependent largely on luck, we only recommend very small stakes if you want to use it.
Next hole score
A great bet to use in-play is betting on a players’ score on the next hole. You can bet on exactly what they score they would get, for example a birdie, bogey, double bogey etc, or you bet whether they will make under par, over par, or exactly par. This is great to use on players who have great long or short games, on long or short holes respectively, as those players are more likely to score under par on these holes that suit their game.
Outright/Ante-post betting on The Open
Outright or ante-post betting is the typical betting style associated with golf. This means betting on the outcome of the tournament as a whole, rather than single holes or rounds, as with the betting markets we listed above.

You can also use this bet each-way, which means betting whether they will finish inside the top 4 (or a wider range specified by the bookmaker). Versus the Field
More variations of this bet are often found at the start of the tournament. Bookmakers will usually offer a few players “vs the field”. For example, you could be offered McIlroy, Garcia and Speith versus the field for odds of 10/1. That means that any one of those three players would have to win the competition for your bet to win. It’s a nice bet to play if you have confidence in a group of players but aren’t sure who is the best.
To Miss the Cut
Halfway through The Open is the cut. Players either make or miss the cut, which is a specified score made at the halfway point. Those over the cut score are out, while those under continue playing. This bet is betting that you think a player won’t make the cut and will be eliminated. It’s often easy to see which players are in bad form, and you then make the cut-throat decision to say they won’t advance.
Place Betting: Top 5 Finish
The clue is really in the name with this bet. Place betting is betting where you think a player will finish at the end of the tournament within a certain range. This one is betting that a player will finish in the top 5. It’s obviously easier to predict than an outright winner, thus, you will receive lowers odds, however, we’d say it was a good insurance bet for those who are confident of some certain players, but not enough to back them outright.

The British Open is also known as the Open Championship or just The Open. It is one of golf’s four major championships and is the oldest of the four. It is usually played in the middle of July and was first played in 1860 at Prestwick. It is the only major played outside of the USA and is played at various courses in England and Scotland. Fourteen different courses have hosted the Open. The location changes between five courses over a five-year period, with the courses alternating each year.
2018 was the 147th version of the Open and was won by Italian Francesco Molinari. In 2019, Northern Ireland will begin to host the competition, with Royal Portrush Golf Club playing host. Portrush has hosted the event once before in 1951, which was to that point the only occasion in which the Open was played at a course outside England and Scotland.
It is named the Open because it is open to all professional and amateur golfers. Even so, only very few amateurs get to play, either by qualification or by invitation. It is one of the most successful and prestigious tournaments in the world and is thoroughly loved by its fans.
It was previously shown on the BBC and was on free to air television from 1955-2015. This all changed when the monolithic company, Sky, bought the rights and took this opportunity away. It is now only for paid customers, and they have the rights up until 2021.
