The Hundred is a professional franchise 100-ball cricket tournament held in England and Wales. It involves eight men’s and eight women’s teams based in major cities. The Hundred Cricket competition had the ambitious goal of making cricket appeal to the younger generation. The action is much more aggressive in this new format, proving to be an all-action version of the sport. In this article, we explain the structure, the rules and previous winners. The Hundred Cricket Tournament

The Hundred Cricket tournament is becoming a favourite with cricket betting fans. It is overseen by the England and Wales Cricket Board and is held in the major cities in the two nations. Established in 2021, the Hundred Cricket is contested by eight men’s and women’s teams in a match estimated to take around two and a half hours. What is The Hundred?

Tournament Format

The tournament is held around July and August during the school summer holidays. The games take two and a half hours, and both men’s and women’s matches are played on the same day and venue. At the end of the league, each team will have played four games at home and four away, including a match against every side, culminating in thirty-two games and is covered by ÂŁ5 betting sites.

The team that finishes top of the league automatically qualifies for the final. In contrast, the team that finishes second and third will compete in a one-match semi-final, with the winner proceeding to the final.

The original idea to create the new format was not received well by all stakeholders as this is just a three-year-old concept. Most traditionalists were against the idea that having the teams based in just the eight major cities was somewhat more biased than traditional county cricket.

The unique selling point to the broadcasters, who were mainly concerned about TV viewership time, supported the idea that the Hundred Cricket could be played in under three hours, something the original T20 match format couldn’t. A scheduled match is a significant factor for the competition in generating revenue for the sport. Television can set a time for viewership and manage the time better than having an endless game that could overrun the set programme schedule.

The idea of having simultaneous men’s and women’s competitions appealed to gender-based equality, especially with equal prize money. The unique notion has quickly professionalised the women’s version of the game.

There was, however, mixed opinion by the players and on social media, especially by fans whose teams were not among the eight being used by the city franchise. That can be viewed in both ways, as the fans who had their cities selected would have been excited by the prospect of being in the new Hundred Cricket format.

Hundred Cricket – History and Founding

The Hundred Cricket has had just two editions, but it is a fascinating idea that began in 2016. It is an intriguing build-up of events and setting up of five years over time to establish one of the most sophisticated leagues in Cricket history. Here is the timeline of events. There was a five-year gestation from 2016 to 2021 when the concept was revealed and became an established competition.

In September 2016, the first-class counties approved the idea with a vote in favour of the city-based competition. The proposed idea was to engage and attract the involvement of young players to play and watch the competition. It was intended to attract the best players and fuel an innovative future of the game that can impact generations both on and off the pitch.

After the city-based idea was approved, the aspect for the one hundred-ball cricket came in 2017. The idea was pitched as a more straightforward, shorter game that could phase out the T20 format. The definite goal was to bring cricket back to BBC TV with the broadcasting appeal of a more concise and entertaining version seemingly very appealing. Although Sky owns the rights to show all games (until 2028), the BBC also offers some games yearly.

The idea was then made public in 2018 with a predetermined format. Eight cities would compete in one hundred-ball inning broken down into fifteen six-ball overs and ten-ball finales. The ECB then established a group to work on the concept to tune it and trim the irregularities that would perfect the idea. In September of the same year, players were involved in the progress and engaged in trial days on substitutes, tactical time-outs and powerplays, putting them to a practical test.

In 2019, eight teams from the eight cities were shortlisted, and test players were allocated. The list of the teams, the county they represent and the home ground are as follows:

The first players to be drafted were Rashid Khan, Andre Russell and Aaron Finch, in that order, with teams choosing ninety-six from a starting berth of five hundred and seventy-one. Later that year, the playing conditions were set as the tournament quickly set the pace for its inaugural event.

All the details had been set, and the big question was when does the Cricket Hundred start? The stage was set for the 2020 season, but all the plans were thrown into chaos with the looming Covid-19 pandemic plaguing the continent. In 2021, they set the stage for the season, a second draft was held, and numerous amendments were made to mitigate the health crisis. The inaugural event was eventually held later in the year 2021.

Rules of The Hundred Tournament

The Hundred Tournament evolved from the original idea in 2016 to today’s established game. The culminating changes and adjustments were set to improve the quality of the match and suit the players. Here are the game’s rules and how it differs from traditional Cricket, specifically the T20 version.

The Hundred – Basic rules:

  • The Hundred-ball Cricket has one hundred balls per innings hence the name. The team that wins the most runs win the game.
  • The fielding side change will end after ten balls.
  • The captain decides the number of balls (five or ten) the bowler delivers.
  • Cash conversion of 94% from adjusted EBITDA; adjusted net leverage ratio reduced to 1.17
  • A bowler can play a maximum of twenty balls in a game.

Rules on time-outs:

  • Both sides have a set time-out limit of ninety seconds, which they chose strategically depending on their play.
  • The team coach has the liberty at his periphery to walk mid-match to the centre of the pitch to talk to his players about tactics and plan plays.

Rules on Powerplay:

  • Each team has twenty-five powerplays.
  • Two fielders are allowed outside the thirty-yard circle while on the powerplay.

Differences between the Hundred Cricket and Regular Cricket

The Hundred Cricket has returned the Overs in Cricket. In the new format, a bowler can bowl five or ten successive balls as determined by the team captain before giving the play to a new bowler. Traditional cricket and other formats change happened after six balls. The aspect was generally predesigned to reduce the play time of the game of the new Hundred Cricket to be shorter than the traditional Cricket, which is way lengthier.

In the new cricket format, two runs are awarded for no balls or wide balls, while the standard format awards one run for the same play. The aspect raises the prospect of the game being more entertaining by increasing the team’s innings score and putting pressure on the opposition to chase the match.

The Hundred Cricket fixtures are determined before the tournament begins, with each team expected to play against all the other teams in the league. There are two stages, the league is the main part of the competition where all the teams compete. The point system is awarded as two points when the team wins, zero points for a defeat, and one for a tie or no result. There is then a knockout phase with one semi-final and one final match.

League phase

The tournament is contested by eight teams for both men and women. Each team will play against the other seven teams in the competition and one more bonus game against the nearest regional rival. It accumulates to eight games per team, four games at home and four games away, with thirty-two league matches.

Knockout Phase

When the league is done, the two teams are set to contest in a winner takes all final. The team that finishes top of the group gains automatic entry to the final. The other finalists are selected by a two-team play-off semi-final contested by the second and third teams from the league. The winner proceeds to the final to face the number one in the finals.

2021 Hundred Cricket Women’s Edition

Southern Brave were the runners winning five and losing twice, earning an extra point after a no result to attain eleven points, while Trent Rockets sat third with ten points with five wins and three draws to achieve ten points. Southern Brave and Trent Rockets contested the eliminator, where the former won by seven wickets. They then beat the Phoenix by thirty-two runs to put their name on the first Hundred Cricket trophy. Birmingham Phoenix and English maestro Liam Livingstone had the most runs, while the top wicket was Australian Adam Milne pulling out incredible performances despite their defeat.

2022 Hundred Cricket Women’s Edition

The reigning Women Champions, Oval Invincible, established their dominance in last year’s edition as joint leaders on ten points with the previous year’s finalists Southern Brave but took first place by NRR (Net Run Rate). Trent Rockets were the most improved team after finishing seventh in 2021, the finished third to qualify for the knockout phase. The competition was intense in the league, with three teams tied at six points, the Rockets, Birmingham Phoenix, and the Northern Superchargers.

2022 Hundred Cricket Men’s Edition

Trent Rockets topped the men’s Hundred Cricket table, winning six and losing one. Manchester Originals and London Spirit were tied on ten points, winning five wins and three defeats. An intense group as well, with three teams tied to ten points but having to be decided with NRR. Manchester Originals beat London Spirits in the eliminator by five wickets.
