Field Hockey Betting Odds
When comparing bookmakers, one of the easiest ways to find out how competitive a company are is to calculate their profit levels. The more generous the odds are, means a higher return to the player (this is called the RTP) and less profit for the bookie.
To enable us to calculate the payout rate, we studied data both current and historical on four field hockey tournaments. We compared the odds at Ladbrokes, LV BET, Betway, 888sport and bet365 for twenty games picked at random. We combined the odds offered for a home win, an away win and the odds for a draw, the results of this can be seen below;
|Field Hockey Betting Site||Hockey World Cup||EuroHockey Championship||Olympic Hockey||Commonwealth Games Hockey|
The data showed that there was minimal variance between the five bookmakers we analysed, which means that they all offered a decent return to the player. Ladbrokes provided consistently good value with a bookmaker profit margin of 3.75%, 3.75%, 2.75% and 3.07% in the four tournaments. 888sport had the lowest RTP at 93.32% for the World Cup, but they offered above-average returns of 96.96% for Olympic events.
Odds are, of course, only one indicator, and our comprehensive reviews examine the operators in much more detail with other fifty ranking criteria considered in our reviews. You can find a full list of our bookmaker reviews at our homepage.
What Field Hockey Tournaments do the Bookmakers Offer?
Hockey World Cup – Held every four years, to date the most successful teams are Pakistan, with four titles from six final appearances, the Dutch, with three golds from seven final appearances are the second most successful team and Australia with three titles from five final appearances.
Germany won in 2002 and 2006, while India and Belgium won their titles in 1975 and 2018. England have never won the World Cup, a final defeat by Australia in 1986 is the only time England have been in the final. They have however finished in fourth place in the last three tournaments.
Commonwealth Games – A general rule of thumb is if you are betting on field hockey at the Commonwealth Games, the smart money is almost always on Australia. Australia has won all gold medals in the men’s event (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014), and four out of the five in the women’s competition. The XXII (22nd) Commonwealth Games are to be held in Birmingham between 27 July – 7 August 2022.
EuroHockey Championship – The EuroHockey Nations Championship is organised by the European Hockey Federation (EHF) for the top eight European national teams. The tournament started in 1970 and is held over seven to eight consecutive days in every odd-numbered year (2009, 2011, etc.).
Germany have won the competition a record eight times ((1970, 1978, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2013). England’s only triumph came in 2002, but they have finished in third-place an incredible seven times (1978, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2011, 2017).
Common Betting Markets for Field Hockey
As field hockey is very similar to ice hockey and some extent football, the betting opportunities are the same as those sports and other team sports. At online sports betting sites, you’ll find a wide range of bets covering both team’s and player’s performances.
It’s worth noting that the markets offered will often depend on the prestige of the tournament, and you may find some competitions are not covered. You may struggle to bet on National Field Hockey league games, but you’ll have no such issues during the World Cup or Olympic events.
Field Hockey Team to Win
The most popular bet in sports betting, you are deciding which team will win. There is only going to be one of three outcomes in field hockey; the home team wins, the away team wins, or the game ends in a draw.
For example, England are playing the Republic of Ireland at the EuroHockey Championship. I can bet on an England win, a Republic of Ireland win or the draw.
Over / Under
Another easy to understand bet is the Over / Under bet. For a field hockey game, the bookmaker will set a total points number, and you can bet if the final score will be over or under that number.
For example, when the Netherlands took on Germany in the EuroHockey Championship 3rd place match the bookmaker offered an over/under figure of 5.5.
As the game can never finish with that scoreline, it means the total amount of points will either be over or under that figure.
In that game, the Netherlands won 4-0, so an over bet would have lost and the under bet would have won.
To complete our trilogy of simple bets, the outright winner of a tournament is popular among field hockey fans.
The great thing about this market is that you can often bet on an event, weeks, months and sometimes even years ahead of the competition. So, even if there are no field hockey tournaments taking place, you can still have a wager.
Popular tournament winner betting markets are the Field Hockey World Cup, the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.
Field Hockey Live Betting
As field hockey teams can often go quite a long time between games, the odds offered on a team may not be a true reflection of how well they are currently playing. This is why we are big fans on being able to bet on Field Hockey in real-time.
Often, watching just a few minutes of action can tell you much more than 50 years of the head to head data of the two teams. Therefore you can use this to your advantage and react to what is happening in the game. This tactic maximises your chances of seeing a return from your bets.
Another innovation that has changed the way we manage our bets is the new ability to cash-out while the match is still taking place. On selected markets, once the action starts, the bookmaker will offer you a price to ‘cash-out’ your bet. This figure they offer could be higher or lower than your original bet.
In the EuroHockey Championship in the semi-finals the Netherlands faced Spain. We placed a £10 bet on the Netherlands to win. The Netherlands took an early lead, and the bookmaker offered £10.47 to settle the bet. This figure increased to £13.56 when the Netherlands doubled their lead.
The figure increased to £16.37 when the scoreline hit 3-0. The figure dropped to £14.96 when Spain made the score 3-1. Fearing a Spanish fightback, we cashed out with the £14.96, a profit of £4.96. This decision to take the money and run would prove to be the right decision as Spain won the match 4-3 and progressed.
Top Bookmaker Bonuses
One of the biggest issues you will find when betting on field hockey is not all tournaments are featured at bookmakers. Therefore we found we needed to have a good selection of bookmakers, just to be able to place bets for all competitions.
The good news about having more than one account was the welcome bonuses we were able to collect in the process. As competition is fierce among online bookies, it’s easy to take advantage of these promotions which will boost your initial bankroll.
- The best for free bets
- Excellent odds
- Great for in-play betting
Ladbrokes deserve mention for their new customer welcome offer, instead of offering free bets, their welcome offer only helps if you’re unlucky! Their promotion will give you up to £40 if the first bet you place with them loses. Therefore your first bet is a win/win situation. LV BET are also a good choice, they will 50% match your first deposit up to a maximum of £50.
Field Hockey Betting Strategy
Remember that odds fluctuate during a game, use this variance to your benefit when attempting to play at the best field hockey betting sites. It’s not unusual to see a goal-blitz in the later stages of a game, so it’s sometimes prudent to hang on before placing a bet. Or even consider splitting bets. For example, Wales are playing Scotland in the EuroHockey Championship.
The odds pre-match are 6/5 Wales and 6/4 Scotland. The bookmakers have Wales slight favourites, but there is little between them. If Scotland takes an early lead, or the longer the game goes on without a score, the longer the odds will become on Wales winning. So if the intention was to bet on Wales, but the odds didn’t seem favourable, patience can sometimes pay off.
Here are some of the most popular field hockey betting tips that you can use.
- Optimize your bet with 3 – 4 accumulators
- Consider checking the less popular leagues as they might have higher odds
- Over/Under bets are always a good options
- Check the live betting sections as they may offer more leagues
- Combine the outright with a fixture bet to Set up a hedge bet
- Analyse the direct clashes to make better predictions
Another tip would be to use the tools at your disposal at the bookmaker’s sites. Not many of us would claim to be total experts about field hockey, not enough to pick it on Mastermind anyway, but even the most ardent field hockey fan can miss some results. Luckily the bookies provide the statistical data to make an informed decision.
888sport for example, have an icon that looks like a bar chart, click on that and it opens an external site with all the field hockey data you could wish for. It can help with not only the likely winner but the probability of a high scoring game.
Another aspect of your strategy should be the types of bets you place. So far, we have concentrated on Single bets. A good way to increase the amount you can win is by combining bets to create multiples. You can read more about these bet types and many more by visiting our betting calculator page.
Interesting Facts and Stats on the Sport
So now you know which are the best field hockey betting sites, and our guide should have also given you some ideas on what you’d like to bet on, we are going to put betting on the back burner for a moment and take a look at the origins of the sport.
Also in this next section, we are going to have a brief look at the history of the sport; when did it start, what changes did one of the first clubs make that increased the sport’s popularity? And who have been the best teams in the international tournaments?
The History of the Sport
A stone carving from510 BC that is located in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens appears to show two players engaged in an ancestral form of hockey; this is the first known depiction of the sport. The modern game of hockey was invented by cricketers playing for Middlesex Cricket Club who needed a sport to play in winter to keep their fitness levels up.
Teddington Hockey Club’s decision to use a ball rather than the previously used rubber cube is widely accepted as being the birth of hockey as a sport.
Field Hockey Olympics
England won the first-ever gold for field hockey when the sport was introduced into the Olympics in 1908. What is notable is that England beat Ireland 8 – 1 in the final and Scotland and Wales shared third place.
No field hockey was played at the 1912 Olympics, and the outbreak of World War 1 saw the 1916 Olympics cancelled. When it returned in 1920 in Antwerp, gold was won by the now unified Great Britain team. This would be the last time Britain would win an Olympic gold until the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
Great Britain finished in 4th place at the 2012 Olympics held in London.
India Olympic Joys
Whilst Great Britain enjoyed early Olympic success, it was India who would become the dominant team in field hockey for many years.
Taking their first Olympic title in 1928, India wouldn’t be replaced as Olympic champions until neighbour Pakistan won the 1960 field hockey gold in 1960, ending India’s 32-year reign. Despite victories in 1964 and 1980, India have been unable to replicate the dominance they once enjoyed in the sport.
The Men’s gold is currently held by Argentina. The South Americans beat Belgium 4-2 in the 2016 final held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
While India can probably justifiably call themselves the best field hockey team, Australia’s Jamie Dwyer can claim the individual title of the best player. Winning the Male FIH Player of the Year three times between 2009 – 2011, he has played over 350 matches for Australia and scored over 220 goals. Dwyer was an influential member of the national team, and his performance helped Australia win gold in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Field Hockey Betting for UK Punters
Depending on the time of year, you may struggle even to see field hockey mentioned at certain online betting sites. The field hockey league action is rarely covered at mainstream bookmakers, and your betting opportunities are likely to be limited to tournaments such as the EuroHockey Championships.
You check out another sport like badminton betting, if this is the case. You can expect this to change during the Tokyo Olympics that will be held in Tokyo in 2020; we are confident all bookmakers will feature all the field hockey matches.
