The famous iGaming conference brand SPiCE has announced they will be holding an event in Sri Lanka next year. Eventus International has chosen the island nation for a three-day event from the 26th to the 28th of July, 2023.

SPiCE Sri Lanka Conference

Organizers have confirmed that Sri Lanka will be the destination for a SPiCE event next year.

Eventus International, owners of the brand, will hold a three-day conference on the potential of land-based casinos, games of skill, sports betting and betting sites in Sri Lanka.

Eventus International states they will be bringing together technology, tourism and gaming experts in one venue to encourage and facilitate conversations on these industries and the potential of Sri Lanka as a place for investments. Also attending will be regulation experts who will be able to advise on current rules and regulations on gambling in the country.

Interest in the Sri Lankan edition is likely to be high as the country has seen a shift in attitude and legality towards gambling in the last decade.

As any visitor will have seen, gambling is prevalent on the island, but it was only in 2010 that the country’s parliament passed a bill that fully regulated gambling for the first time.

The government at the time wanted to legalize gambling to entice overseas visitors. The South Asian country is one of the smallest countries in land mass, but with 21.92m occupants, it is one of the densest. The increased standard of living in recent years has seen a boom in population, rising by 1.12% in 2016 alone. As the population has grown, so has the demand for gambling products.

Before the government regulated the gambling market, operators would exploit legal loopholes and pay increased taxes to local authorities to avoid punishment. When the change came in, illegal operations were fined heavily, and the individuals involved could face up to five years in prison.

However, at the time, the proposals were seen as controversial and against the country’s ordinarily conservative values. The then-opposition leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe, accused the government of running casinos to generate funds solely for the party’s benefit. However, some compromises were made, such as zoning. The deputy finance minister at the time promised that there would be no gambling establishments near culturally sensitive locations, such as temples, schools and highly populated areas.

The Organizers, Eventus International, describe themselves as “a dynamic, summit and exhibition company that connects leaders with leaders and turns opportunity into possibility.”

In a press release, they quote Vanessa K. Bohns, associate professor of Organizational Behavior, ILR School, Cornell University, who says: “Studies show that face-to-face sales is up to 34 times more effective than online or mobile forms of sales. This is because prospective clients get to know representatives of your company and are able to associate the people behind the brand with the company itself, therefore impacting how much the client trusts your products and offers”

The company also cater for iGaming and other gambling-related companies by offering sponsorship tiers at SPiCE events ranging from silver sponsor to title sponsor. The basic package provides marketing and branding before the event and exposure during the conference. However, for gambling operators with a bigger budget, the title sponsors will have an opportunity to work with the Eventus International team to create a bespoke promotional campaign that they claim is highly efficient and effective.

Of the attendees at a typical Spice event, 40% are operators, 25% are suppliers, 15% affiliates, 9% are payment specialists, and 11% have experience in regulatory affairs.

The Sri Lanka SPiCE event is just one of many that Eventus International will be running next year. At the beginning of March, SPiCE India will take place in Goa, India. The iGaming roadshows will then move to Morocco (Gaming Expo Francophone Africa) and then to Johannesburg, South Africa ( BiG Africa Summit).

Other Cities before SPiCE Sri Lanka are; Limassol, Cyprus (Cyprus Gaming Show), Munich, Germany (iGaming Germany), San José, Costa Rica (iGaming Central America), San Francisco, USA ( All American Sports Betting Summit) and Kampala, Uganda (Sports Betting East Africa+).
