Bet365’s decision to remove its legacy telephone betting service to customers after 20 years is due to falling usage as more customers use the Stoke-based firm online services. The bookmaker has offered telephone betting since its founding in 2000, but a gradual decline in numbers has led to the point where the service is no longer financially viable. Punters can still access Bet365 sports betting and their other online services on the website.

The telephone number of 0871 218 4131, used for the telephone betting service, has been discontinued and visitors to the help section on bet365’s website will see a message confirming the removal of the service.

A customer’s Twitter request for the reasoning behind the decision was answered by the bookmaker as follows; “It is a business decision to withdraw the Telephone Betting Service. We will continue to offer our full range of services online, and our dedicated Customer Service team will be available 24/7 to support you.”

Affected customers are asked to contact customer service to discuss other options with the bookmaker. All telephone betting accounts have already been transferred to online accounts

Spokesman Pat Cooney said of the changes:

Telephone betting had become such a minimal part of our business that it didn’t justify the staffing levels. Everything is online nowadays. All staff have been found positions elsewhere. We’d been considering our position for the last couple of months and finally shut down telephone betting on Monday. Pat Cooney, bet365 spokesman

While bet365 may be reducing services on these shores, the company is continuing its global expansion plans and is launching an online casino product in New Jersey in partnership with gambling software development company Playtech.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) has granted regulatory approval for the deal and will represent Playtech and bet365’s first joint venture into the potentially lucrative US market together. Bet365 already have interests Stateside, having an agreement in place with Hard Rock Atlantic City.

Playtech CEO Mor Weizer said of the granting regulatory approval: “This is a major milestone for Playtech. We are delighted to have met the stringent regulatory requirements of the DGE and to be launching in New Jersey with our long-standing strategic partner bet365. “The US is a highly strategic market for Playtech, and we see significant demand for the full breadth of our product offering.”

Weizer continued: “We are initially launching our online casino product in New Jersey and over time will increase our products on offer to include sports, platform and live casino. We will continue to expand into further states as they regulate.”

No time frame has been given for the roll-out of the online casino product in New Jersey by either bet365 or Playtech.
