Britain’s Anthony Joshua will fight New Zealander Joseph Parker in unification bout.

The fight will take place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on 31st March, the scene of Joshua’s last victory against Carlos Takam in October and was announced after several months of intense negotiations with disputes over the purse split and location of the fight.

This has now been resolved with Parker expected to earn 30–35% of the purse by virtue of having one belt compared to his rival’s three, while Joshua will earn an estimated 65%. It is not the first time that Joshua has faced an unbeaten fighter in his career with Emanuele Leo, Gary Cornish, Dillian Whyte, Charles Martin and Dominic Breazeale all defending an unbeaten record before the orthodox boxer from Watford fought and beat them.

Boxing history in the making

This bout will make British boxing history with the encounter being the first ever held between two heavyweight champions in Britain. This was highlighted by Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn who said:

I’m delighted to get this fight made – it’s been a long time coming, It’s the first time in history that two reigning heavyweight world champions have met in Britain.Eddie Hearn, Boxing promoter

These sentiments were echoed by Joshua himself who acknowledged his opponent had a lot to lose and the respect he had for his opponent in taking the fight but also reinforced how quickly this fight will come around, saying:

These fights aren’t easy because there is a lot on the line – so respect to team Parker for taking the challenge. I’m looking forward to it. Training camp is under way and before you know, 31 March will be upon us.Anthony Joshua, Boxer

Unsurprisingly in the hyped-up world of boxing, the noise coming from team Parker is that Joshua is in for a big shock when the two meet in Wales. The 10-1 shot feels he can pull off a surprise victory and said:

A couple of months ago, I heard him say: ‘Why should I be worried about this little kid from New Zealand?’ Well, now he’s about to find out. And the world is about to find out whether AJ can really take a punch.Joseph Parker, Boxer

His camp has also ramped up the rhetoric by showing footage of Joshua being knocked down in his amateur days and offering £20,000 to anyone who can provide footage of Joseph Parker suffering a similar fate.

The boxer himself has raised the temperature before the fight by suggesting that Joshua has taken performance enhancing drugs. In an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Norton was speaking to Joshua and called Parker “the king of pies”.

The prospect of a fighter holding all the heavyweight titles is a subject that has many people excited. This is something never achieved before but could become a step closer after this anticipated fight with the victor likely to face Deontay Wilder to add the WBC championship belt to the collection.

There is also of course the mouth-watering prospect of former champ Tyson Fury completing his return to the ring. Surely, Joshua v Fury is the fight all English boxing fans want to see!
