Premier League Matchday 9 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

This week, we’re treated to a Friday night fixture, as the footballing weekend kicks off early with West Ham against Brighton. Chelsea host Watford after a shock loss to Crystal Palace last week, while the final fixture of the week is perhaps the most interesting, as Spurs host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Match of the Day

After our game of the week featuring Liverpool last week was a huge let-down, we’re a little hesitant, but can’t help but feature the Reds in our game of the week again. They travel to Wembley to face Tottenham. Both teams earned good results on Tuesday in the Champions League and should be raring to go for this one.

About the Game:

After a somewhat shaky start in the league, Tottenham have well and truly found their form. They are unbeaten in ten games, including an impressive win against Dortmund and a hard-earned draw this week against Real Madrid in the Champions League. One caveat remains though; their league form at their home stadium for the year, Wembley. In those aforementioned last ten games, at home they’ve drawn with Burnley and Swansea, while only beating Bournemouth by a single goal. This will be their toughest home test for a while and an interesting spectacle. Deli Alli was dropped for Llorente in the Champions League, though should return to the team. Ben Davies missed last week with illness and may recover in time, although Danny Rose is finally back from injury and came on as a sub against Real Madrid.

Bet on the match of the week between Tottenham and Liverpool at Titanbet

Liverpool played well last weekend and a draw against Manchester United is a great result. At the end of the day though, it is just a point, and that result meant Liverpool have now drawn three of their last four league games. They may have turned a corner after Tuesday’s thrashing of Maribor though. Liverpool came out 7-0 winners and the result could be the confidence booster they need. Sadio Mane’s absence was not felt in that match, but against the better teams, he is a big loss. The Red’s front three were firing against Maribor but the real test is here against a resolute Tottenham defence. Liverpool always play to win and we hope that will make this game a cracker.

Prediction: Both teams to score – All of the last four meetings between these teams have featured over 1.5 goals, while both teams have scored in three. Historically, there are goals in this fixture, and we see this one following that trend.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Our game of the week is the final match on Sunday, but the action starts almost 48 hours before on Friday, with West Ham and Brighton. A full programme of Saturday fixtures are followed by the two Sunday games to finish of the week.

West Ham v Brighton

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Friday 20th October 20:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 5/6 D: 5/2 A: 10/3

About the Game:

West Ham had three points snatched from them late in the game last week against Burnley, after playing the majority of the game with ten men. They’ll be without Andy Carroll through suspension then, but with Michail Antonio and Manuel Lanzini back in the team, the West Ham attack should still be potent.

Brighton were also denied a win due to a late goal last week. Both of these teams sit on eight points in the league, with just goal difference separating them. Brighton will be the happiest though and should continue to play with the shackles off. Away form has been their problem so far, with just one point away from home, which doesn’t bode so well for this one.

Prediction: West Ham win – Brighton have just one draw away from home while West Ham have won two from three home games.

Chelsea v Watford

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Saturday 21st October 12:30
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/7 D: 9/2 A: 17/2

About the Game:

Chelsea will likely have caused millions to rip up their accumulator betting slips last weekend as they became the first team to concede a goal and lose to Crystal Palace. Álvaro Morata returned to the lineup on Wednesday against Roma in the Champions League, but the Blues could only manage a draw at home there. That’s one point in their last three games in all competitions for Chelsea, who need to turn things around quickly.

Watford continued their excellent form this season with a win against Arsenal last week. The Hornets were a goal down at half-time, but turned up the pressure after sensing weakness from the Gunners. This is another tough game for them, but they may well once again smell weakness after Chelsea’s shock loss to Palace last weekend.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – All of Watford’s last three – and two of Chelsea’s last three – games have featured over 2.5 goals.

Huddersfield v Manchester United

  • Venue: Kirklees Stadium
  • Saturday 21st October 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 9/1 D: 4/1 A: 3/10

About the Game:

Huddersfield’s descent continued last week with a loss to fellow strugglers Swansea. The Terriers have taken just three points from a possible eighteen now, after winning their first two games of the season. Despite home advantage, few will be expecting them to take anything from this match.

Jose Mourinho pulled off another masterclass defensive performance against Benfica on Wednesday, as United earned a 1-0 victory against the Portuguese team. Mourinho took the same approach last weekend against Liverpool and was criticized heavily, after a dull game ended goalless. It’s unlikely he will set his team up to play defensively for this one though. The Red Devils lost ground on local rivals Manchester City after their draw last week and will be looking to get straight back to winning ways in a game they should comfortably win.

Prediction: Man Utd Win – Huddersfield are in a poor run of form and Manchester United will make no mistakes here.

Manchester City v Burnley

  • Venue: The Etihad
  • Saturday 21st October 15:00
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/12 D: 10/1 A: 25/1

About the Game:

Manchester City are probably the most in-form team not just in England at the moment, but Europe too. The Citizens have won their last six league games and all three of their Champions League games so far. Tuesday’s match against Napoli was the closest they’ve come to drawing, but City still scored two goals, as well as putting seven past Stoke last weekend. Burnley are a tough unit to breakdown and some City players may have a little fatigue, but they are still strong favourites.

Burnley managed to preserve their unbeaten record – which now extends to six games – with a late goal last weekend against West Ham. That record is at threat here though. City seem unstoppable at the moment and Dyche is sure to set Burnley up defensively to try and neutralise the City attack. Should City score though, then that plan will be out of the window, and we may see another cricket score. Burnley are solid at the back though and should be able to avoid such a scenario, but whether they will take any points is another matter.

Prediction: Man City win + U 3.5 goals – This is a difficult one to extract value in. Burnley haven’t conceded more than one goal in a game since the opening day of the season and though they will likely lose, we see them limiting City’s goals.

Newcastle v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: St Jame’s Park
  • Saturday 21st October 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 19/20 D: 5/2 A: 14/5

About the Game:

Newcastle were impressive last weekend away at Southampton and were unlucky not to get all three points. A surprise loss to Brighton is their only defeat since the second weekend of the season, while before that they had won three on the bounce. Good draws against Liverpool and Southampton mean confidence is at a high in the North-East, but after Palace pulled off a heist against Chelsea last weekend, the Magpies will still have to be cautious.

Even the most optimistic of Palace fans wouldn’t have expected their team to get their first three points of the season against Chelsea last week. In spite of the odds, Palace won and are finally off the mark for the season. That shouldn’t disguise the fact that they are still in a dire situation, with just three points with a quarter of the season gone. But with Wilfred Zaha back Palace seem a different team. It was his goal and performance that earned them victory and how he performs will be closely tied to whether Palace stand a chance in this match.

Prediction: Newcastle Draw no Bet – Palace seem to finally have improved, but the Magpies won’t make the same mistake Chelsea did with home advantage on their side.

Stoke v Bournemouth

  • Saturday 21st October 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 23/20 D: 12/5 A: 23/10

About the Game:

After a great win against Southampton at the end of September, Stoke could do nothing to avoid defeat last week. Manchester City demolished the Potters 7-2 and manager Mark Hughes conceded that City really were that good. Stoke should move on then and this is a great fixture to do so. Bournemouth are one of just three teams below them in the league and have lost all of their away games so far this season.

Bournemouth put in a decent performance last weekend against Tottenham, but it wasn’t enough to avoid their sixth defeat of the season. With no points earned from their four away games, their away form is definitely a problem. However, they’ve only picked up four points from four home games, so Bournemouth’s home form isn’t much to write home about either. The Cherries sit second from bottom and with Crystal Palace finally getting off the mark last week, Bournemouth could easily find themselves bottom of the table soon.

Prediction: Stoke Draw no bet – Bournemouth haven’t picked up a single point away from home yet, while Stoke are strong at home, beating Arsenal and drawing with Manchester United already this season.

Swansea v Leicester

  • Venue: Amex Stadium
  • Saturday 21st October 15:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 17/10 D: 11/5 A: 13/8

About the Game:

Swansea’s comfortable win against Huddersfield last weekend shot them up the table. It was however just their second win of the season and the first points they had earned at home. Paul Clement will be hoping it’s the impetus for improved form at home and against a team that have just sacked their manager, Swansea may sense weakness.

Leicester sacked manager Craig Shakespeare just four months after his appointment after his side drew with West Brom last weekend. The Foxes are without a win since the second week of the season and currently sit in the relegation zone. Swansea are not the most difficult of opponents, but Leicester are managerless and on a bad run of form, meaning this could be a tough one for them.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Swansea are relatively tight at the back and haven’t scored more than two in any Premier League match yet this season.

Southampton v West Brom

  • Venue: St Mary’s
  • Saturday 21st October 17:30
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/5 D: 5/2 A: 7/2

About the Game:

Manolo Gabbiadini came back into the Saint’s starting lineup last weekend and promptly scored a brace to earn Southampton a draw against Newcastle. On the whole though, it was another poor performance by a team that are consistently under-achieving so far this season. The performances and results will have to improve soon, or Mauricio Pellegrino is looking increasingly likely to be the next Premier League manager for the chop.

West Brom got their second draw in a row last weekend, but that result meant that they haven’t won any of their last six matches. The Baggies sit, as usual, in mid-table, but they do have a tough run of fixtures coming up that will see them play Manchester City, Chelsea, and Spurs over the four games after this one. Three points here would go a long way to seeing that they don’t slip too far down the table.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – A tight affair between two mid-table teams that are in poor form where neither will want to lose.

Everton v Arsenal

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Sunday 22nd October
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/5 D: 13/5 A: 19/20

About the Game:

If reports are to be believed, Ronald Koeman has, as of last weekend, one month to turn things round at Everton. It wasn’t a great start then, but could have been worse, if not for a late equaliser against Brighton. The millions spent in the summer haven’t paid off at all yet and this will be a tricky match to get their first win in three games. Everton lost again in the Europa league on Thursday, meaning they are all but out of that competition and another loss here could mean Koeman won’t even have a month to turn things around.

In typical Arsenal fashion, the Gunners collapsed last weekend, after leading Watford at half-time. A win would have meant a great run of results for Arsenal, but the defeat puts the pressure firmly back on Arsène Wenger. Watford said that they sensed a frailty and weakness in Arsenal, which has been a criticism for years. With Mustafi out and Koscielny a doubt, patching up this weakness is proving difficult. Arsenal did win their Europa league fixture though and are favourites going into this one.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Both teams and indeed both managers need to start improving quickly. We expect Arsenal to win, though Everton have won two games at home and should score at least one.
