Premier League Matchday 7 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

Tottenham start the action off once again as they visit Huddersfield, while Saturday’s afternoon kick-off is sure to be an interesting clash between high-flyers Chelsea and Manchester City. Super Sunday offers up three games, with Arsenal and Liverpool looking to keep up the pace on the leaders.

Match of the Day

The Saturday afternoon fixture between Chelsea and Manchester City is without doubt the match of the day. Chelsea are unbeaten since the first day of the season, while City are yet to lose. There are still a minority think Chelsea aren’t the team of last season and genuine title contenders. A win here would surely suggest otherwise, but beating City will require a monumental effort.

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Saturday 30th September 17:30
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 19/10 D: 23/10 A: 11/8

About the Game:

After an opening day defeat, Chelsea are now unbeaten in their last eight games. The Blues seem to be improving with each and every game and have already proved they can overcome Europe’s elite with an away win against Atletico in the Champions League in midweek. Álvaro Morata scored in that fixture and is in relentless form, with seven goals in eight games. Eden Hazard is also almost back to full fitness and Chelsea will surely be even better with him back in the team. David Luiz is set to miss out through suspension, but Gary Cahill is available once again, so should slot in as a direct replacement.

Bet on the match of the week between Chelsea and Manchester City at BetVictor

In their last three Premier League games, City have scored sixteen goals, while conceding none. They’ve also scored six in two Champions League games, while also conceding none. The Citizens are in irresistible form. However, Thursday night has brought news that could change things somewhat. Firstly, Benjamin Mendy’s injury has been confirmed as a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, which will see him out for some time. Even more significantly, Sergio Agüero has fractured a rib in a car crash and will also likely be out for around six weeks. The Argentinian has six goals in as many matches in the Premier League already and he will be a significant loss. City’s squad is now strong enough to cover for both will quality replacements, but with Agüero in the form he is in, his absence could be hugely significant.

Prediction: Both teams to score – City still have pace and quality in attack despite the loss of Agüero. They will approach this match with the intent to win and their record suggests they will score. Chelsea will have to do the same to take something from the match.

Rest of the Premier League Games

There are plenty of other tasty fixtures to sink our teeth into. Super Sunday has three fixtures back-to-back, while Man United are expected to comfortably win against Crystal Palace on Saturday and really put the pressure on City to win in the afternoon.

Huddersfield v Spurs

  • Venue: The Kirklees Stadium
  • Saturday 30th September 12:30
  • Referee: Neil Swarbrick
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 15/2 D: 15/4 A: 4/11

About the Game:

Huddersfield’s flying start to the season has slowed significantly, as they start to face the realities of the Premier League. That said, they’ve still only lost one and have kept a hugely impressive four clean sheets. Playing for a draw here wouldn’t necessarily be wise though and The Terriers will face by far their toughest test yet. Steve Mounie is out with injury, which will severely limit Huddersfield’s attacking potency too. This could be a tough day for the Terriers.

It’s nine goals in all competitions already for Harry Kane, after a brace last weekend against West Ham was followed by a Champions League hattrick on Tuesday night. All of those have come in September and Kane will have one last chance this Saturday to add to his impressive September tally. Christian Eriksen should be available again after missing out on Tuesday through illness, though Serge Aurier is suspended. Spurs need to up the ante in the league and should be well up for this one.

Prediction: Tottenham win – Spurs enjoy playing away currently and Harry Kane is bound to get on the scoresheet once again.

Bournemouth v Leicester

  • Venue: Dean Court
  • Saturday 30th September 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 7/4 D: 9/4 A: 31/20

About the Game:

Bournemouth couldn’t make it two wins in a row last weekend as they let a one goal lead slip against Everton. There’s not too much to smile about for the Cherries currently. Josh King finally got on the scoresheet this season, but Bournemouth are yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Leciester have had a tough run of fixtures and as a result they have just one win and a draw to their name so far. That should change soon though. The fixture list turning kinder starts here and Leicester have actually played well, despite the results. Jamie Vardy is a doubt for the game which would be a big loss for the Foxes. Vardy already has five goals this season and has been in fine scoring form. Leicester have a great run of fixtures coming up and will looking at getting on a winning run that could start here.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Leicester especially are scoring for fun but have been less than solid at the back.

Manchester United v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Old Trafford
  • Saturday 30th September 15:00
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/6 D: 6/1 A: 16/1

About the Game:

Despite playing poorly last weekend against Southampton, United still churned out a win in a classic Mourinho defensive performance. More emphatic was the Champions League victory against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, where Romelu Lukaku added another two goals to his tally in a Manchester United shirt. Phil Jones is a doubt for this match, but on paper, this is an easy win for United. After Palace’s recent results, the question is more by how many goals United will win by, rather than if they will win.

You’d have thought it couldn’t get any worse for Palace. Six losses, no goals scored and thirteen conceded means they sit rock bottom. However, the loss of Christian Benteke to injury means things have gotten a lot worse. It would seem that this is to be an exercise in damage control for Palace, who currently offer nothing going forward. Palace fans will be watching this one through their fingers.

Prediction: Manchester United Handicap -1 – Barring a miracle, United should comfortably win this one.

Stoke v Southampton

  • Venue: bet365 Stadium
  • Saturday 30th September 15:00
  • Referee: Mike Jones
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 9/5 D: 11/5 A: 6/4

About the Game:

Stoke were comprehensively beaten last weekend by Chelsea and have just one victory so far this season. While that came in an impressive performance against Arsenal, and the Potters also held Manchester United to a draw, they need to improve and bring some consistency to their game. This will be tough against a defensively solid Southampton.

Southampton’s problem this season has been in attack. Despite sitting in eleventh place, they’ve only scored five goals. They enjoyed 60% possession against United last week and were the better team, but were unable to turn their dominance into a goal. In fact, they didn’t really carve out a genuine chance. The Saints do appear to be getting better though, and you’d think that once a goal goes in, things could click into place.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Five of Southampton’s six games this season have featured under 2.5 goals

West Brom v Watford

  • Venue: The Hawthorns
  • Saturday 30th September 15:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 23/20 D: 11/5 A: 5/2

About the Game:

After an opening two wins in the league, the Baggies have slipped into a poor run of form, with two draws and two losses in their last four. West Brom looked lacklustre against Arsenal last week. Two goals between their three strikers displays the problems quite clearly, as the baggies have scored two in their last four and are yet to score more than one goal in a game this season. This will be a tough match against an organised Watford team.

A trip to the Hawthorns is never an easy one, but Watford may be quietly confident here. Other than a thrashing by Manchester City, Watford are unbeaten and the team that Marco Silva has put together have gelled remarkably quickly. All their wins this season have come away from home and the Hornets may be able to sneak a victory against an out of form West Brom.

Prediction: Watford draw no bet – Watford are a fantastic price to win this, but it won’t be easy.

West Ham v Swansea
West Ham Form Guide LLWDL
Swansea Form Guide LWLDL
  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Saturday 30th September 15:00
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/5 D: 5/2 A: 7/2

About the Game:

West Ham can count themselves unlucky not to get anything out of last week’s match against rivals Tottenham. They left their comeback too late and Bilic will be sure not to let a game slip beyond him before the half-time whistle is blown again. This is a very winnable game for the Hammers, who should have Michail Antonio available again. Swansea are organised at the back, but the onus is on the Hammers to win here.

Swansea might have earned impressive draws against Spurs and Southampton this season, but their only win has come against whipping boys Crystal Palace. Draws won’t cut it in the race for Premier League survival and the Swans will have to start scoring more. Wilfred Bony is not yet match fit and it’s hard to see where the goals will come from for Swansea.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Swansea will look to frustrate West Ham here.

Arsenal v Brighton

  • Venue: Emirates
  • Sunday 01st October 12:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/5 D: 11/2 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Arsenal extended their winning run in the Europa League in midweek with a comfortable away win. They were too much for West Brom last weekend, but the performance wasn’t necessarily great. Alexis Sánchez is improving with each game, while Wenger can also welcome Mesut Özil back to the team. New signning Alexandre Lacazette has scored in each of his first three home games and has a chance to make it four here. Arsenal will be fully expected to win and they should do so.

Brighton eaked out a victory against Newcastle last week, but in truth, luck played a large part. That said, it’s been a decent start for Brighton so far, who are currently 13th, with two wins and a draw. The bad news here is that Tomer Hemed is suspended after retrospective action from the FA and the Seagulls will therefore find it even harder to break the gunners defence.

Prediction: Arsenal win – Brighton will carry little attacking threat and Arsenal’s quality in attack will find a way to score.

Everton v Burnley
Everton Form Guide DLLLW
Burnley Form Guide LDWDD
  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Sunday 01st October 14:15
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/6 D: 13/5 A: 17/4

About the Game:

Everton managed to win a league game for the first time since the opening day of the season last week, as they came from behind to snatch victory against Bournemouth. The Toffees couldn’t do the same in the Europa League on Thursday though, as they eventually drew 2-2 with Apollon Limassol. Ronald Koeman’s new look team doesn’t seem to be clicking currently and the manager may soon have to look at setting things up differently.

Burnley are once again proving a difficult team to beat. They’ve lost just once this season and have only conceded twice in their last four league games. Significantly, they’re yet to lose away from home. Against a misfiring Everton, they will be quietly confident of taking something from this match.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Burnley neither concede nor score many and Everton will find it very tough to break them down.

Newcastle v Liverpool
Newcastle Form Guide LWWWL
Liverpool Form Guide WWLDW
  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Sunday 01st October
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 15/4 D: 11/4 A: 7/10

About the Game:

Newcastle are currently five points behind Liverpool in the table, but they will probably be more satisfied with their start to the season. They’ve won two of their three home games this season and St James’ Park could turn into something of a fortress this season. This will be a tough test though against an attacking Liverpool team that is back in form. But Rafa Benitez will be aware of Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses, especially from set-pieces. Matt Ritchie’s deliveries could cause Liverpool serious problems.

Liverpool finally got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a slim victory against Leicester last week. They could only manage a draw in the Champions League on Tuesday however with the result 1-1 in Moscow. The good news is that Philippe Coutinho is back to his best, with two goals in two games, while Sadio Mané has also returned from suspension.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Liverpool’s attacking prowess means them scoring is almost a certainty, while the same applies to conceding due to their defensive frailties.
