Premier League Matchday 36 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The EPL continues at a relentless pace with barely a day’s rest of late. The action this week starts on Friday with league leaders Liverpool playing rock bottom and already relegated Huddersfield. It finishes off with an important showdown between Manchester United and Chelsea on Sunday.

Brighton will hoping for a win that will all but guarantee them safety, while Cardiff have the chance to reignite their survival hopes with a match against one of the two teams below them.

Match of the Day

What can we say about last night! Spurs are through the UCL semi-final after perhaps the most dramatic fixture in the competition’s history. But this is an equally huge match for both teams. City don’t face the kindest run-in, with an away game at Old Trafford next week. The next two games will likely define City’s success domestically.

  • Venue: Old Trafford
  • Sunday 28 April 16:30
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/8 D: 23/10 A: 13/8

About the Game:

Manchester United couldn’t stop Manchester City on Wednesday night as the crisis at Old Trafford deepens. Despite the shocking run – four defeats in their last six games, with zero goals scored from open play in that time – United somehow have an outside chance of a top four finish. But that has to start with a win here. Losing is not an option.

Paul Pogba spoke about the players lifting their performance before the derby. Despite playing somewhat better, the Red Devils hardly played well, barely threatening the City goal. That will need to change, but Solksjaer will likely opt to play some more possession based football than the long ball, counterattacking approach he employed against City. But the players themselves will need to improve. The defence was at times wildly unorganised, while Paul Pogba’s words of lifting his game hardly rung true on the pitch. A top four finish is out of United’s hands, but winning all their remaining games gives them a chance. Can they turn things around?

Bet on the match between Manchester United and Chelsea this Sunday

Chelsea failed to beat Burnley at home and like Manchester United and Arsenal, through away another valuable chance to make a step closer to a UCL finishing spot. Frustrations are mounting at Stamford Bridge and whether they qualify for the Champions League or not, Sarri’s tenure as manager after the season ends will be discussed.

You could even forgive Sarri for concentrating on the Europa League as Chelsea’s most viable route to next season’s Champions League. The Blues face Frankfurt, and Arsenal or Valencia will be the opponents in the final, should they make it there. That’s three matches, the same amount as remain for the Blues domestically. This one is the most difficult, but you could realistically see Chelsea losing any of three, with a home match against Watford and a trip to inform Leicester on the final day of the season. That match could also prove to be a final, with all or nothing at stake. Towards this match, Chelsea are likely to once again be without Kante and Rudiger, with the Blues clearly missing both. Hudson-Odio ruptured his achilles and is out for the season.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – United have to win, but neither team are in great form. We don’t see this one being a classic.

Rest of the Premier League Games

The action kicks off on Friday and runs right through until Sunday afternoon with our match of the day rounding off the action.

Liverpool v Huddersfield

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Friday 26 April 20:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/14 D: 10/1 A: 25/1

About the Game:

There isn’t too much to say about this one. While Klopp and his players will not go into any match complacent, the Reds are invincible at home and are playing the bottom team of the league. A strong performance and result in the first game of the week will put the pressure back onto Manchester City.

This is the toughest game in the league, but Huddersfield are long since relegated and planning for next season. Playing for pride, avoiding a heavy defeat is the goal here.

Prediction: Liverpool Win + Both teams to score no – There shouldn’t be any surprises here in what will be a comfortable, if perhaps not emphatic, win.

Tottenham v West Ham

  • Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Saturday 27 April 12:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/5 D: 7/2 A: 13/2

About the Game:

Spurs look set to be one of the teams to secure a UCL place, as they picked up a valuable win against Brighton, while the teams around them all struggle. Spurs’ record in the new stadium is immaculate, and they must continue that record with a win here.

West Ham are in danger of a finishing place far below the expectations of fans, players, and the board. Winless in four, last week’s performance was a marked improvement, but they must be even better if they are to pick up anything against their rivals here.

Prediction: Tottenham Win – Spurs are unbeaten in their new stadium and cannot afford to drop points in a game like this.

Crystal Palace v Everton

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Saturday 27 April 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 8/5 D: 11/5 A: 17/10

About the Game:

Crystal Palace put a huge dent in Arsenal’s UCL hopes with an impressive away win at the Emirates this week. The Eagles are actually better away than at home, and welcome Everton here, a team that is also in great form.

Everton’s overall good form continues and they dominated Manchester United last week, despite losing to already relegated Fulham the week prior. The Toffees have now won four of their last six and could be the team to finish seventh if they keep up this form.

Prediction: Both teams to score – This could be tight, but we expect both teams to find some success in attack.

Fulham v Cardiff

  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Saturday 27 April 15:00
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 7/5 D: 11/5 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Fulham have now put together back-to-back wins and making it three here would perhaps be the most satisfying point of a disappointing season; inflicting defeat on fellow promotees Cardiff will likely go a long way towards relegating them too.

Cardiff will need a win and then some to even have a chance at staying in the EPL. This is their most winnable remaining game and its importance cannot therefore be overstated. Fulham are on a good little run and Cardiff must bring that to an end to have any chance of staying up.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Cardiff struggle to score and Fulham seem to have tightened up defensively. This could be a nervy one for the visitors.

Southampton v Bournemouth

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Saturday 27 April 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 21/20 D: 5/2 A: 12/5

About the Game:

The Saints will be disappointed in not being able to hang onto their lead against Watford in midweek, but in truth, the hardwork is done and they are surely safe for another season. A strong finish will be the icing on the cake to a successful takeover from Hasenhuttl, and it is certainly possible, with this one being very winnable.

Bournemouth remain frustratingly inconsistent and fell to defeat in their last match. Their away form has been poor all season – their last away match aside – so they will likely struggle here.

Prediction: Southampton Draw no bet – The Saints are proving hard to beat of late and we envision another strong performance.

Watford v Wolves
Watford Form Guide WLWWD

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 27 April 15:00
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 11/8 D: 23/10 A: 19/10

About the Game:

Watford still look the team most likely to finish in seventh spot, but the question is, do they really want to? Most of the teams vying for the best of the rest spot have faltered of late, with the prospect of Europa League football next season perhaps not too attractive. Wolves are one of the teams also in the hunt for seventh, but this could still be drab.

Wolves comfortably beat Arsenal on Wednesday to sink a huge blow into the Gunner’s UCL hopes. That win put them one point and one place ahead of opponents Watford, with the winner of this match in the driving seat to finish second.

Prediction: Both teams to score – We’re not sure which, if any, of these teams wants Europa League football, but there will likely be goals for both teams here.

Brighton v Newcastle

  • Venue: AMEX
  • Saturday 27 April 17:30
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 6/5 D: 21/10 A: 5/2

About the Game:

Brighton almost held onto a point against Spurs which would have earned them two draws in a row. Whilst not sounding like much, that would have gone a long way towards helping them survive, with Cardiff hot on their heels. Nevertheless, one more win will surely do it, and this is by far the best shot they have from their remaining games.

Newcastle are finishing strongly though and won’t roll over here. Victory here would be three wins a row, as Benitez has once again done more than what could be expected from his team.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – A point is extremely valuable for Brighton, who could be forgiven for simply trying to contain the visitors.

Leicester v Arsenal
Leicester Form Guide WDLDD
Arsenal Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: King Power
  • Sunday 28 April 12:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 9/5 D: 12/5 A: 7/5

About the Game:

Leicester clawed back a point at West Ham to keep them in with a shot at seventh. Brendan Rogers has quietly gone about his work since taking over and although Leicester have a tricky final run, things are looking up for the Foxes, who will be looking forward to next season.

Arsenal’s away form has haunted them all season and might have inflicted a fatal blow after defeat at Wolves followed a surprise home loss against Crystal Palace. Arsenal will expect Chelsea to drop points this weekend, with a win putting them back in the driving seat, but this is a very difficult game for a team that hates playing away from home.

Prediction: Leicester Draw no bet – Leicester are in great form and will make things very difficult for Arsenal.

Burnley v Manchester City
Burnley Form Guide LDDDW
Manchester City Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Sunday 28 April 14:05
  • Referee: Paul Tierney
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 14/1 D: 7/1 A: 1/7

About the Game:

Burnley are on a four game unbeaten run and Liverpool will be the team most hoping that continues. Sean Dyche knows how to stop the big teams, but this is the greatest test of the season.

City rode what was perhaps their most difficult remaining challenge with victory against neighbours Manchester United on Wednesday. There are three games left, and this is now perhaps the most tricky of those three. Nevertheless, with City on a ten game winning streak and heading for the title, you wouldn’t expect them to slip up.

Prediction: Manchester City Win + Under 3.5 goals – City aren’t playing quite so attacking with the title on the line, but should still win comfortably.
