Premier League Matchday 29 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The EPL returns for the third time within a week this weekend, as another round of fixtures features key games at both ends of the table.

Arsenal have the chance to close the gap even further on Spurs one place ahead of them. Cardiff, Southampton, and Brighton continue their fight to avoid likely being the third team to be relegated, while the action is rounded off with the Merseyside derby on Sunday afternoon.

Match of the Day

Back-to-back defeats for Tottenham has opened up the battle for third spot, which seemed sure to be theirs just a week ago.

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Saturday 02 March 12:30
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/1 D: 13/5 A: 5/2

About the Game:

A surprise defeat to Burnley was followed up with a very lacklustre performance against Chelsea on Wednesday night. Many expected Spurs to win that match, but instead, they barely mustered a shot on goal.

Those defeats have blown the battle for third place wide open, with four teams again in contention. One of them is today’s opponents, Arsenal. The Gunners have speed and power upfront, which doesn’t bode well for Spurs, who have conceded two goals in each of their last two matches. Harry Kane, back in the team after a short injury, was poor midweek. The striker should improve as his fitness and sharpness returns, but he did miss one potential good chance. Defeat is not an option for Pochettino here, but his team failed to create chances in their last match. That leaves a big question mark over how best to set up his team.

Bet on the match between Tottenham and Arsenal this weekend.

Five goals against Bournemouth led to an emphatic win for Arsenal on Wednesday. Mesut Özil has started the last two matches and was instrumental against the Cherries. Could the German still have a big part to play this season?

Based on Emery’s past treatment of Özil it would seem unlikely. However, he is another option and offers creativity to a team that sometimes needs it. But Arsenal’s biggest problem under Emery is not in the final third. Rather, it is defensively where the Gunners must improve if they really want to compete at the top. They’ve registered just five clean sheets this season, and not one of them has come away from home. That leads us to Arsenal’s other big problem; away form. The Gunners have won less than half of the amount of games away compared to at home. They beat Spurs in the reverse fixture back in December last year, but home advantage has a big part to play in Arsenal’s games.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Arsenal’s away form means they will find this tough, but goals from both sides seem on the cards.

Rest of the Premier League Games

There are plenty of fixtures to keep any football fan happy over the weekend. The best of the rest is without doubt the Merseyside derby which rounds off the action on Sunday afternoon.

Bournemouth v Manchester City

  • Venue: Vitality Stadium
  • Saturday 02 March 15:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance Odds H:12/1 D: 11/2 A: 1/5

About the Game:

Bournemouth continue to leak goals, especially against the top six. Conceding five goals against Arsenal is hardly the best preparation to face the league’s top scorers, who themselves are in great form.

It wasn’t easy, but City did enough to get the win against West Ham on Wednesday. With a number of injuries, many players were forced to play when maybe a rest was deserved, and City did look a little tired. Those players will be able to get a short rest, although many previously injured players are now returning to the team.

Prediction: Manchester City Half time/Full time – Bournemouth are so leaky at the back against the top six, while City are scoring goals for fun.

Brighton v Huddersfield

  • Venue: AMEX
  • Saturday 02 March 15:00
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/5 D: 12/5 A: 15/4

About the Game:

Brighton’s poor run of form has seen them slip dangerously close to the drop zone. This is the best fixture of the season on paper, so Chris Hughton has to win. Defeat would not be disastrous at this stage, but it would be a massive missed opportunity for three points.

Huddersfield finally won a match! The Terriers picked up their first three points since 25 November with a last gasp winner against Wolves. It is surely a case of too little too late, with Huddersfield still miles from safety. But, they face an out of sorts Brighton here, so maybe, just maybe, the players and fans will dare to dream.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Two out of form teams that do not have their shooting boots on lately clash here.

Burnley v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Saturday 02 March 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 9/5 D: 9/4 A: 6/4

About the Game:

Burnley’s magnificent run finally came to an end on Wednesday. While the Clarets are far from assured safety, that run has gone a long way towards ensuring it, with just a couple more wins needed to take the pressure off. One of them could come here, in an important game for two teams that are currently level on points.

Palace were on a decent run themselves, with four games unbeaten until they hosted Manchester United on Wednesday. They have a much better chance of winning here, against a team they cannot afford to drop points to.

Prediction: Burnley Draw no bet – Burnley have been impressive lately and with home advantage they should avoid defeat.

Manchester United v Southampton

  • Venue: Old Trafford
  • Saturday 02 March 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 9/20 D: 10/3 A: 11/2

About the Game:

Manchester United’s incredible domestic run continues. With teams around them often dropping points, the Red Devils have closed the gap on the teams above them massively. You would not want to bet against this being another routine win, although the caveat is that United face PSG next week, meaning Solksjaer may want to rest some first team players.

Southampton got the job done in a must win game against Fulham midweek. That has lifted them outside of the relegation zone again, but the Saints will be in a dogfight until the final game of the season. They face the league’s most inform team here.

Prediction: Manchester United Win – United are red-hot and spirits are high at Old Trafford, meaning that whatever the teamsheet, they are likely to win.

Wolves v Cardiff City

  • Venue: Molineux
  • Saturday 02 March 15:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/9 D: 7/2 A: 11/2

About the Game:

Wolves seem to hate playing Huddersfield. Defeat to them on Tuesday was a shock, and means that Wolves are now three games without a win. They face fellow promotees Cardiff here, who are doing a lot worse than them this season, but will still be very difficult to beat.

Cardiff have lost two on the bounce which ended a good little run for them. Neil Warnock’s team know how difficult their situation is but continue to fight. There are easier games than this to come, but Warnock would relish taking points off his Wolves counterpart.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Both teams are struggling to keep clean sheets lately.

West Ham v Newcastle

  • Venue: The London Stadium
  • Saturday 02 March 17:30
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/1 D: 11/5 A: 3/1

About the Game:

The Hammers put a great shift in against the champions on Wednesday but couldn’t find a break through up front. They welcome an inform Newcastle, but will fancy their chances – West Ham haven’t lost at home in their last four matches at the London Stadium.

Three wins from their last five matches has seen Newcastle make some progress up the table. Away form is the problem though, with the Magpies winning just two games away from St James’ Park all season.

Prediction: West Ham Win – The Hammers are good at home and have recently welcomed back key players from injury.

Watford v Leicester

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Sunday 03 March 12:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/8 D: 9/4 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Watford were on the wrong end of a mauling by Liverpool so must pick themselves up and dust themselves down. The Hornets are too good to let that defeat get to them, but will face a tricky task here.

Leicester have a new manager in Brendan Rogers and will be hoping to get a boost from his appointment. Their first win in seven games on Tuesday has put them on the right track, and they have good fixtures on the whole.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Both teams have a point to prove here and are strong in attack.

Fulham v Chelsea
Fulham Form Guide LDDDW
Chelsea Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Sunday 03 March 14:05
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/1 D: 3/1 A: 8/15

About the Game:

Fulham had to win against Southampton and the clock is ticking until relegation becomes a mathematical certainty. Even the most optimistic of fans won’t expect a win here against a Chelsea team who, although prone to collapse themselves, were impressive in their last match.

Chelsea and Sarri put the drama of the EFL Cup final behind them and were hugely impressive against rivals Spurs. That win has put them back in the race for the Champions League spots, while the Blues have a very kind run of fixtures too.

Prediction: Chelsea Win + Over 2.5 goals – The Blues will be rejuvenated by their last win and could start a very good run here.

Everton v Liverpool
Everton Form Guide DDWLL

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Sunday 03 March 16:15
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 17/4 D: 16/5 A: 4/7

About the Game:

Everton earned a great win during a tough time. This will be a much tougher match, but the intensity of the occasion means that anyone can win this one, regardless of recent form. Jordan Pickford will surely be reminded of his horror error that cost Everton a point in the reverse fixture. That one was goalless until the last seconds, so hopefully this one will be more entertaining.

Even without Roberto Firmino Liverpool were able to put five past Watford on Wednesay. Sadio Mané is in red hot form, but Salah was conspicuous in his absence from the scoresheet. Klopp will be hoping the Egyptian improves his form as the race for the title grows in intensity each week, and ahead of the crucial Champions League clash against Bayern.

Prediction: Liverpool Win – Everton’s form is so patchy while Liverpool are the real deal this season. The Reds aren’t are great away from home, but we think they will continue the performance from midweek into this match.
