Premier League Matchday 25 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

With cup games taking place last week, the Premier League shifts to midweek for game week 25. The matches will be played over Tuesday and Wednesday evening and are followed immediately by another full round of fixtures at the weekend.

With Swansea winning at Liverpool last week, it really couldn’t be tighter at the bottom of the table. It’s anyone’s guess as to who will eventually get relegated. At the top end, Tottenham and Liverpool both dropped points, as the race for the top four becomes equally tight.

Match of the Day

Our match of the day perhaps doesn’t promise goals a plenty, but it should nevertheless be an intriguing fixture between two teams managed by managers with great tactical nous. Manchester United just had the edge last time with a late winner from Anthony Martial the only difference between the teams, so Spurs will be out for a bit of revenge, as well as ensuring they don’t drop further back from the leaders.

About the Game:

Despite scoring five past Southampton three weeks prior, Spurs were held to a draw by the Saints last week. Pochettino has Swansea to thank for not losing further ground on fourth placed Liverpool, with the Swans earning the unlikeliest of victories against high-flying Liverpool.

Christian Eriksen was conspicuous in his absence in that match, as the Dane missed out through illness. His creativity was obviously lacking, but he should be fit again in time for this one. Toby Alderweireld is also returning from injury and will be a massive boost to Spur’s defence. This match may come a bit early as he looks to rebuild his fitness, but his return will bring a spark to the dressing room. Spurs face the league’s best defence in Manchester United, so all eyes will be on Harry Kane to see if the striker can add to his 21 goals.

Bet on the match of the week between Tottenham and Manchester United at Coral

All other eyes will be on Alexis Sánchez. The new signing will wear United’s famous no.7 shirt and is expected to make his Premier League debut here. Sánchez’s favoured position is probably on the left-hand side of the attack and he could slot straight into that role, as he did in the FA Cup on Saturday in an impressive debut. Although United have been much better in attack of late, especially Anthony Martial, so it would be a little harsh if the Frenchman had to make way.

Both teams are coming into this one on a good unbeaten run, but United’s stretches back a little further. The Red Devils have won their last three and are unbeaten in eight games, losing only once in their last thirteen games to Manchester City. Their three defeats is also the second lowest of any team. United are difficult to turn over then, as Spurs will already know. With Alexis Sánchez on board, United have undoubtedly improved their attack. That should send warning signals to all other Premier League teams, as the team with the best defence has just added a proven Premier League goalscorer to their attack. Tottenham could be the first victims.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – A very tough one to call, though we think that United might edge it with Sánchez on board. The last few meetings between these two teams have been tight and we expect nothing different here.

Rest of the Premier League Games

The action runs through Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Southampton and Brighton meet in a very important bottom of the table clash for both clubs, while West Ham and Crystal Palace have the chance to put distance between themselves with a win.

  • Venue: Liberty Stadium
  • Tuesday 30th January 19:45
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/2 D: 7/2 A: 1/2

About the Game:

Carlos Carvalhal has made a fantastic start to life as Swansea City manager, with two wins and a draw in four games. Although the Swans still sit bottom of the table, they’ve dramatically closed the gap on the teams above them. A win here is another extremely big ask but Swansea have just beaten Liverpool, so another shock result could perhaps be on the cards.

The match against Palace last week looked tough on paper, but Arsenal made easy work of the Eagles in the first half. They’ve been without Alexis for a few games already, so the transition should be fairly smooth, while the Gunners may also welcome Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the starting lineup. A win against Chelsea to go through to the final of the EFL Cup, along with the return of Aaron Ramsey from injury, should also inspire the Gunners.

Prediction: O 2.5 goals – With Arsenal back in free scoring form, we expect goals here.

  • Tuesday 30th January 19:45
  • Referee: Neil Swarbrick
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/1 D: 23/10 A: 8/5

About the Game:

West Ham’s unbeaten run continues and they were once again unfortunate to only draw against Bournemouth. However, there could be problems afoot, as both Manuel Lanzini and Marko Arnautovic look set for a spell on the sidelines. The pair have been the focal point of the Hammer’s attack and will both missed and not easily replaced, as injuries continue to haunt Moyes. A defeat to Championship side Wigan in the FA Cup – a match in which Arthur Masuaku earned a hefty suspension for spitting – could be a sign of things going forward, as the Hammer’s injury list increases.

Palace got a thick slice of reality after getting pumped by Arsenal for the second time in a month last weekend. It’s most likely it was a single bad performance, rather than the start of a dip in form though, and Hodgson will sense blood here with West Ham’s aforementioned injuries.

Prediction: O 1.5 goals – West Ham are weakened up front but we still expect both teams to get on the scoresheet.

Huddersfield v Liverpool

  • Venue: Kirklees Stadium
  • Tuesday 30th January 20:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 10/1 D: 9/2 A: 1/3

About the Game:

Huddersfield are without a win in six games now as the Terriers find themselves just two points clear of the relegation zone. Wagner’s men will be looking to Swansea’s victory last week against Liverpool as inspiration, but it’s difficult to see a repeat occurrence.

In classic Liverpool style, the Reds lost to the team at the bottom of the table last week, after beating the previously unbeaten team at the top of the table the week prior. It was a costly and unnecessary defeat that has meant that Tottenham have closed the gap. Liverpool also lost to West Brom at the weekend in the FA Cup, which does suggest that defeat was more than just a stutter. However, Klopp is the right man to put the defeat behind the players and move on, but there may be one or two nerves among the Liverpool fans.

Prediction: Liverpool win – Last week’s shock defeat ended a long unbeaten streak, but the Reds should get right back to winning ways.

Chelsea v Bournemouth

  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Wednesday 31st January 19:45
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/7 D: 11/2 A: 10/1

About the Game:

An inspired first half performance saw Chelsea sweep away Brighton last week as Eden Hazard looked back to his best. Rumours circle that Chelsea are close to purchasing Edin Dzeko, though Michy Batshuayi was given a rare start up front and made the most of it, so he may earn another start here. Chelsea were knocked out of the Caraboa Cup by Arsenal on Wednesday night and will need to lift their performance once again.

Bournemouth earned another draw against West Ham for the second time in four weeks last week, once again through a nice slice of luck. The Cherries only lost by a single goal to Chelsea earlier in the season, but they haven’t fared well against the big boys this year, with a recent victory against Arsenal the only time they’ve taken points from a top six team.

Prediction: Chelsea win + BTTs no – Chelsea’s defence is strong currently and they should emerge winners here.

Everton v Leicester

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Wednesday 31st January 19:45
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/1 D: 11/5 A: 13/8

About the Game:

The Toffees were lucky to rescue a draw against struggling West Brom last week. New signing Theo Walcott made an instant impact with an assist, but Everton are now winless in six games. Six of the Toffees seven wins this season have come at home, suggesting they have somewhat of a chance, despite their poor form.

Leicester have returned to form with two wins and a draw in their last three, along with a clean sheet in each of those games. Claude Puel has taken things back to basics, utilising Vardy’s speed and Mahrez’s skill to undo teams. It has worked well and Leicester may well nick a win here.

Prediction: Leicester Draw no bet – It will be tough for the Foxes to win thanks to how Big Sam sets his team up, but they will give it a good go and have the best chance of victory here.

Newcastle v Burnley

  • Venue: St Jame’s Park
  • Wednesday 31st January 19:45
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 5/4 D: 11/5 A: 11/4

About the Game:

Newcastle gave it a good go against Manchester City last week, but like most before them, they couldn’t take any points away from the Etihad. They’ve received reinforcements through the acquisition of Kennedy from Chelsea, but Newcastle will have to start winning matches, as they’re currently just one point above the relegation zone.

Burnley’s first half of the season was incredible, but it’s now no points in six games for the Clarets. There’s no chance of relegation, but it would be a shame to not at least maintain a top ten finish after such a great start. They have had some difficult fixtures, but this is as good a game as any to return to winning ways.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Both teams have trouble scoring of late and have featured in mostly low scoring games.

Southampton v Brighton

  • Venue: St Mary’s
  • Wednesday 31st January 19:45
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/5 D: 5/2 A: 9/2

About the Game:

Few would have expected Southampton to struggle quite as much as they have this season. Currently occupying the final relegation place, today’s opponents are one of three teams just a point above them. A win would mean leapfrogging Brighton and temporary safety, but you’d have to go back to the 26th November for the last time Southampton won a Premier League game.

Brighton too are on a bad run though. They’ve won just once in the time since the Saint’s last win, so this should be an even contest. There’s everything to play for in what could be classed as a six pointer, so Brighton will be looking to Pascal Groß to inspire them to victory.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Southampton have to use home advantage to go for the win, but they’ve kept one clean sheet since October.

Manchester City v West Brom

  • Venue: The Etihad
  • Wednesday 31st January 20:00
  • Referee: Bobby Madley
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/7 D: 9/1 A: 20/1

About the Game:

City followed up their first league defeat of the season with a win and also knocked Bristol City out of the EFL Cup. You’d expect a routine win here, especially with Sergio Agüero in the form he is in, with four goals in his last two games. An FA Cup win against Cardiff City was not without cost; Leroy Sané was on the wrong end of a horror tackle and looks set to be out for months.

West Brom are starting their revival under Alan Pardew but few will expect them to get points here. The Baggies were the better team against Everton last week and deserved more than a draw, but they must once again take a fearless approach to stand any chance here.

Prediction: Sergio Agüero anytime goalscorer – City are starting to once again turn on the style and they should comfortably win this.

Stoke v Watford

  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/10 D: 5/2 A: 23/10

About the Game:

Stoke’s win against Huddersfield was enough to drag them out of the relegation zone for the time being. Stoke have a new manager of their own of course who has already tasted victory and seems to be steering the team in the right direction, so this will be an interesting encounter between two managers that aren’t so familiar with their players.

Watford parted ways with manager Marco Silva after a spectacularly bad run. Javi Gracia takes over at the Hornets who, despite being in the top ten all season, are now one of the many teams that are getting pulled into the relegation battle. Many teams this season have been rejuvenated by a new manager, so Watford fans will be hoping for the same for their team. Watford have been easily beaten by most teams of late, but things could now change under a new manager.

Prediction: Both teams to score yes – Two teams with new managers with something to prove. We expect a fiery contest with lots of goals at the bet365 Arena.
