Premier League Matchday 24 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The action takes place midweek this week, after we were treated to a weekend of FA Cup fixtures. There were plenty of surprise results there, so maybe we can expect more in the EPL?

Tottenham, Everton and West Ham were the biggest victims of the FA Cup this weekend, while Wolves were forced into a replay. All those teams will now be focusing on the league and that will start with earning three points this week.

Match of the Day

Wolves are one point ahead of West Ham in table, but a win for the Hammers here could see them jump three places to seventh.

About the Game:

Wolves will have to play a replay of their FA Cup fourth round fixture after they were held by Shrewsbury. It was only a late goal that spared Wolves defeat, after Nuno Espírito Santo was forced to bring on some of his big guns in the second half. Wolves are looking better in the league lately though. Diego Jota scored a sensational hattrick to beat Leicester 4-3 in their last match to mark his return to form. He had a difficult start to life in the EPL after lighting up the Championship last year. However, he is now in fine form, and is proving a great strike partner to Jiminez. Wolves will be without Willy Boly as the defender serves out the remainder of his ban.

Bet on the match between Wolves and West Ham at Matchbook!

West Ham crashed out of the FA Cup away to Wimbledon on Saturday night. AFC Wimbledon are currently rock bottom of league one and five points adrift of the team above them. But that didn’t stop them sinking the Hammers 4-2 in an impressive display.

Boss Manuel Pellegrini publicly voiced his displeasure at the result and performance. He certainly had a point, as West Ham were poor, but we expect them to bounce back here. A win would see them leapfrog Wolves, likely into seventh place. They should be helped by a return to the starting lineup for Marko Arnautovic. The Austrian has signed a contract extension with West Ham after it appeared he would be leaving for China. That is a massive boost for the Hammers and should clear the grey clouds that have been circling lately. Manuel Lanzini is also back and approaching match fitness. He will strengthen the team even further, so good things appear on the horizon for West Ham. As for this match, the team must be much more organised defensively, but with all their attacking talent, West Ham are sure to cause Wolves some problems.

Prediction: Both teams to score – With Arnautovic back to the starting lineup and West Ham needing a boost after their FA Cup elimination, we expect a lively game from both sides.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Spurs and Chelsea face tricky matches in their quest to stay in the top four, while chasing Manchester United and Arsenal have favourable home fixtures.

Arsenal v Cardiff

  • Venue: The Emirates
  • Tuesday 29 January 19:45
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/7 D: 9/2 A: 17/2

About the Game:

Arsenal and especially Unai Emery will be very pleased with last week’s win against Chelsea, as it shows the Gunners can now compete with the best. They did lose Hector Bellerin to a knee cruciate ligament injury though, and the defender will be a big loss, especially with numerous other personnel currently sidelined. They also suffered a moral crushing defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup on Friday, so a return to winning ways here is important.

Cardiff were thoroughly beaten by fellow strugglers Newcastle last weekend and have an even more difficult task ahead of them here. There is a considerable gap between Cardiff and the two teams below them, but Cardiff are still in the drop zone, and need to ensure that they keep in touch with the teams immediately above them.

Prediction: Arsenal Win + Over 2.5 goals – Injuries may force Emery’s hand and a change in formation could be implemented. That could make this one a typically high-scoring win for the Gunners.

Fulham v Brighton

  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Tuesday 29 January 19:45
  • Referee: Lee Probert
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 5/4 D: 21/10 A: 12/5

About the Game:

Fulham once again lost a match despite taking the lead. The manner of the defeat to Tottenham – a last minute winner from Harry Winks – will be tough to swallow. Time is running out for Fulham, and they have perhaps the most daunting fixture list of all the relegation threatened teams. Brighton are a tough opponent, but Fulham have to take points from these type of home games.

Brighton have suffered back-to-back defeats, but they have faced Liverpool and Manchester United in those two games, and lost by just one goal. The Seagulls are a strong team and will be eyeing this one as a chance to get back to winning ways.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Fulham will likely grab a goal at home but their leaky defence means they are almost assured of conceding at least once.

Huddersfield v Everton

  • Venue: John Smith’s Stadium
  • Tuesday 29 January 19:45
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 3/1 D: 12/5 A: 10/11

About the Game:

Huddersfield have appointed another German to replace David Wagner. Jan Siewert will take over and has one of the hardest jobs in football right now. He has home advantage here against an out of form Everton, but he will need to completely overhaul the team to inspire a win.

Everton continue to be consistently inconsistent. The Toffees should win here but Huddersfield will be boosted by a new manager. Should Everton lose, then the pressure on Marco Silva will really start to increase, especially after losing Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Prediction: Everton Win – Huddersfield will give it everything, but Silva simply has to come away with three points from this match.

Manchester United v Burnley

  • Venue: Old Trafford
  • Tuesday 29 January 20:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/9 D: 11/2 A: 10/1

About the Game:

Yet another win from Manchester United and yet more stunning performances, and goals, from Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba. In this form, and with confidence at an all-time high, another victory seems inevitable.

Burnley are on a great win of three wins and one draw in their last four matches. Those results flatter to deceive a little bit however, and we think the Clarets might get a rude awakening here against a genuinely strong attacking team.

Prediction: Manchester United Win + Under 3.5 goals – Despite the wins, Burnley’s attack is still toothless. United are scoring for fun and should win, but Burnley will set up to try to keep them out.

Newcastle v Manchester City

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Tuesday 29 January 20:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierney
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 12/1 D: 11/2 A: 1/5

About the Game:

Newcastle earned a vital three points last weekend to end a poor run, but they are huge outsiders here. The Magpies have lost double the amount of home games than they have away, in a hostile St James’ Park atmosphere.

Manchester City seem to be getting even stronger, if that’s possible. Kevin de Bruyne is hitting full match fitness, while Benjamin Mendy is back in the squad. It appears that City will simply not take their foot off the accelerator as they keep the pressure on Liverpool.

Prediction: Manchester City Win + Over 2.5 goals – City are scoring for fun and Newcastle’s home form is poor this season.

Bournemouth v Chelsea

  • Venue: Vitality Stadium
  • Wednesday 30 December 19:45
  • Referee: Roger East
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 17/4 D: 3/1 A: 3/5

About the Game:

Bournemouth ended a miserable run with a good win in their last match. The fixtures remain tricky for the Cherries though, but with Chelsea out of sorts and home advantage, Eddie Howe may be fancying his chances here.

A difficult period for Chelsea was compounded by defeat to rivals Arsenal in the last match. The Blues have won just 64% of their away matches this season, but they are likely to welcome Higuain into the starting lineup for this one. Could the striker be the missing piece of the puzzle for Sarri? Hopefully that question will be answered here.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Bournemouth have Callum Wilson back in the squad and their fearless style should mean they get some joy here.

Southampton v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Wednesday 30 January 19:45
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 13/10 D: 9/4 A: 21/10

About the Game:

Hasenhüttl has turned things completely around at Saint Marys. Southampton have put space between them and the drop zone, and recorded back-to-back wins. Somehow, they are level on points with opponents Crystal Palace. Don’t put it past the Saints to be ahead of Palace in the table after this one.

Palace pushed league leaders Liverpool almost all the way last weekend and were unlucky to get nothing for their troubles. The Eagles have won more away games than at home this season, but Southampton are in great form.

Prediction: Southampton Draw no bet – The Saints are moving in the right direction and they will not want to halt their progress with this favourable home fixture.

Liverpool v Leicester
Liverpool Form Guide LDDDW

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Wednesday 30 January 20:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/11 D: 6/1 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Liverpool keep winning and are still four points clear at the top. Mo Salah has forced his way to the top of the top-scorer table with 16 goals, with the striker hitting fantastic form. Both he and Liverpool are almost unstoppable at Anfield, so the Leicester defence must be at their best.

The Foxes remain inconsistent though, and have lost three of their last four matches. Leicester did win their last match against a top four team when they beat Manchester City in December. However, Liverpool are in top form and have home advantage here, so Leicester can expect no quarter being given.

Prediction: Liverpool Win + Both teams to score no – Liverpool’s record at Anfield is well known and injured defenders are returning to the squad. We expect the Reds to dominate.

Spurs v Watford
Spurs Form Guide DDWLL

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Wednesday 30 January 20:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 8/13 D: 3/1 A: 4/1

About the Game:

Spurs needed a last minute winner to beat Fulham, but the signs were not too positive without Harry Kane. Spurs will also now be without Deli Alli, with the midfielder expected to be out for around six weeks. The matches over the coming weeks will be the biggest test of Spurs’ season, and if things don’t get their way, they could easily drop out of the top four quickly.

Watford are in good form and are unbeaten in their last four. They couldn’t find a way past Burnley last week, but Watford are playing great football and are proving tough to beat. They might be away here, but with Spurs lacking firepower, Watford have a great chance at an upset.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – With Spurs seriously lacking firepower, this could be a frustrating afternoon against a very capable opponent.
