Premier League Matchday 23 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

There was no shortage of action and intrigue in last week’s EPL fixtures. West Ham put in a fantastic showing to beat Arsenal, Southampton picked up another win, and Manchester United continued their revival with an impressive away win against Spurs.

Despite a kind run of fixtures, things are looking gloomy for Tottenham, with Harry Kane out injured for two months and Son departed for the Asian games. They may start feeling the pressure then, especially with both United clubs re-finding form, Liverpool maintaining theirs, and Chelsea grinding out results.

Match of the Day

Arsenal can ill-afford another defeat. Losing to West Ham last week has put them six points behind Chelsea, their opponents here, above them in fourth place.

  • Quick Glance Odds H: 19/10 D: 5/2 A: 13/10

About the Game:

The Gunners were well beaten by an impressive West Ham last weekend. Despite the fire power they have upfront, they were unable to find a way past a stubborn Hammer’s defence.

Arsenal have home advantage here, where they are considerably better, having lost just once at the Emirates all season. They can also welcome back a host of players from injury. Mustafi, Bellerin, and Monreal should all be available for selection, though perhaps lacking match fitness. That should help in defence, where Arsenal are really struggling. The question of Mesut Özil still lingers over the Emirates. Now fit, Özil still did not feature in the last match, leaving many wondering if he figures at all in Emery’s plans. Maybe that question will be answered here? Arsenal were crying out for a playmaker to better serve Aubameyang and Lacazette last weekend, although Emery seems unwilling to play Özil at all, let alone against the big teams.

Chelsea sneaked a win last weekend against Newcastle but once again it wasn’t easy. With Morata out of form and seemingly on his way out of Stamford Bridge, Maurizio Sarri persists with Eden Hazard as a false nine. General consensus seems to be that that is far from effective.

The Blues are unbeaten in four, but have drawn at home with Southampton in that time. They also lost at home to Leicester the game before. Consistency, and breaking down teams below them, is the issue for Chelsea then, perhaps a symptom of the aforementioned striker problem. Sarri will know of his opponent’s defensive frailties here though, and may change his approach in anticipation. A late goal gave Sarri victory in the reverse leg of this fixture back in August. But the Blues may not control possession here as they like to and as they did in that match. It will be interesting to see how Chelsea adapt.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Arsenal are stronger at home and with most first-team players back they should return to form here. Chelsea will not rollover easily though in what could be another high-scoring encounter.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Once again, there’s plenty of tasty action throughout the weekend. Newcastle and Cardiff meet in a vital relegation battle, while West Ham and Bournemouth could be an exciting match between two mid-table teams with big aspirations.

  • Venue: Molineux
  • Saturday 19 January 12:30
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 6/5 D: 23/10 A: 9/4

About the Game:

Wolves pretty much surrendered Monday’s match to Manchester City with Willy Boly’s red card. Defeat was probably on the cards anyway, but Wolves will be eyeing this one up as a great opportunity to return to winning ways.

But Leicester can beat anyone on their day, as shown with recent wins against Manchester City and Chelsea. The Foxes are however dreadfully inconsistent, so it’s difficult to predict which team will turn up.

Prediction: Wolves Draw no bet – It’s hard to say which Leicester team we will see, but one thing is for sure; Wolves are strong at home and will be desperate to get back to winning ways.

Bournemouth v West Ham

  • Venue: Vitality Stadium
  • Saturday 19 January 15:00
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 7/5 D: 12/5 A: 9/5

About the Game:

Bournemouth had the best start to the season outside of the big six, but recent poor results have seen them slip to 12th. They haven’t won for four games, and really need Callum Wilson to return from injury to get them back amongst the goals. With tough fixtures on the horizon, the Cherries will need to win this one, or they could see themselves slip even further down the table.

West Ham, on the other hand, could see themselves jump into 7th with a win here. The Hammers are a genuine contender for the best of the rest, and were hugely impressive in last week’s win against Arsenal. Arnautouvic may be on the way out, but Samir Nasri looks to still have what it takes, and could prove the shrewdest bit of business in this transfer window.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – West Ham will be liable on the counterattack, while Bournemouth are shipping goals.

Liverpool v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Saturday 19 January 15:00
  • Referee: Jonathan Moss
  • Quick Glance Odds H:1/6 D: 13/2 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Last week’s match away at Brighton was as tough as expected, but Liverpool still managed to get all three points, thanks to a Mohamed Salah penalty. The injuries are starting to rack up at Liverpool though. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Wijnaldum have joined the injured list, which leaves the Reds looking short, especially in defence.

Palace have a goalkeeper injury crisis on their hands, which means that Julian Speroni is likely to play his first match of the season. Things are looking good elsewhere, but Palace are unlikely to join Manchester City as the only team to take anything from Anfield this season.

Prediction: Liverpool Win + Over 2.5 goals – With Liverpool at home and Palace fielding a third-choice goalkeeper we expect to see plenty of action.

Manchester United v Brighton

  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/7 D: 4/1 A: 10/1

About the Game:

United look the real deal under Solksjaer. Last week’s win against Tottenham was impressive itself, but the new boss has now set a new record for consecutive wins since taking over. With home advantage and red-hot form behind them, United should get three points once again.

Brighton fought hard and almost earned a point against Liverpool last weekend. This will be just as tough, and they no longer have home advantage. Coping with United’s lightning quick attacking three will be the biggest challenge here.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Manchester United have averaged three goals a game over their last five matches.

Newcastle v Cardiff

  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 19/20 D: 23/10 A: 3/1

About the Game:

Newcastle enjoyed strong spells against Chelsea last week but were eventually outclassed and lost another tight match. This is one they can’t afford to lose though. Cardiff are one point and one place above the Magpies, so this is a real six-pointer.

Cardiff almost slipped up at home to bottom team Huddersfield last week however. Neil Warnock’s men aren’t in much better form than the hosts, but they are proving tougher to beat, losing only one of the last four.

Prediction: Both teams to score – A draw isn’t a great result for anyone here, with both teams needing to push away from the relegation zone.

Southampton v Everton

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Saturday 19 December 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 31/20 D: 11/5 A: 7/4

About the Game:

Southampton’s position in the table is still precarious, but the results are coming. Despite being down to ten men for much of the match last week, they hung on to victory, showing that a newly found fighting spirit exists in the team. With Everton in patchy form, the Saints will carry that belief forward here in a game that Hasenhüttl will see as winnable.

Everton ended a poor run with a victory against Bournemouth, but this is a tricky fixture against a resurgent team that needs points. The Toffees have a fully fit squad and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ademola Lookman in great form, perhaps Silva will allow Richarlison to play in his favoured winger position.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Neither team is known for keeping clean sheets, while both will be on the front foot looking to make it back-to-back wins.

Watford v Burnley

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 19 January 15:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 8/13 D: 13/5 A: 5/1

About the Game:

Watford pulled off an impressive smash and grab at Crystal Palace last weekend. The Hornets have found wins tough to come by, so that result will be much appreciated, and it could be the boost needed to inspire victory here.

Burnley have put together three wins in a row as they have lifted themselves clear of the drop zone. However, those results flatter to deceive somewhat. They set a league record by beating Fulham last week despite having zero shots on goal, winning thanks to two own goals. This could be a wake up call.

Prediction: Watford Win – Watford haven’t failed to score for over six weeks, and should have more than enough to win here.

Huddersfield v Manchester City

  • Venue: Kirklees Stadium
  • Sunday 20 January 13:30
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 16/1 D: 13/2 A: 1/7

About the Game:

David Wagner has left Huddersfield and a new appointee is being made as we speak. Whoever they are, they’re in for a daunting first match. Just keeping the score respectable may be the aim for Huddersfield here.

City are in flying form as they keep up the heat on leaders Liverpool. Sergio Agüero is back fit but the performances of Gabriel Jesus will give Pep something to ponder with his team selection.

Prediction: Manchester City Win + Over 2.5 goals – A new manager is often a boost to teams, but City are in unstoppable form and will surely win by a large margin.

Fulham v Spurs
Fulham Form Guide DDWLL

  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Sunday 20 January 16:00
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 4/1 D: 13/5 A: 7/10

About the Game:

Fulham have the dubious honour of being the only EPL team to lose a match despite facing no shots on target, thanks to last week’s defeat to Burnley. The opposition here is tough, but significantly weakened through injury, so maybe Ranieri is fancying his chances of taking something here.

Lightning has struck twice on Spurs this week, as Son Heung-Min’s departure to the Asian games is compounded by an ankle ligament injury to Harry Kane. It’s well documented that Spurs have no direct cover for Kane, while Son would be the only legitimate option as a non like-for-like replacement. It will be interesting simply to see how Spurs lineup here, let alone how they fare.

Prediction: Spurs Win – Despite Kane’s injury, we think Spurs will win, and that bet is pretty good value thanks to the striker’s absence.
