Premier League Matchday 2 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

The first week of the 2018-19 Premier League season did not disappoint! All of last season’s top six – with the exception of Arsenal – got off to a winning start, while there were also impressive wins for Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Watford.

The new boys had it tough, with only Wolves earning a point against ten-man Everton, while West Ham were the whipping boys of week one.

There are more cracking fixtures to look forward to this week. West Ham have a great chance to get their first win at home to Bournemouth, while Crystal Palace versus Liverpool, taking place on Monday night, should be a fantastic display of attacking football.

Match of the Day

Last week’s match of the day was a cracker, as Manchester City inflicted defeat on Unai Emery in his first match as Arsenal boss. But Arsenal will have it all to do again this week, as they head to West London to face Chelsea, in what may be an equally difficult fixture.

  • Saturday 18 August 17:30
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/5  D: 3/1 A: 3/1

About the Game:

Maurizio Sarri was quick to reiterate the fact that, despite Chelsea’s impressive opening day win, it will take time for his team to play well and consistently win. But, Chelsea looked comfortable in their opening game of the season. Granted, Huddersfield, in all fairness to them, are perhaps easier opponents than Arsenal will prove, but there were many positives for Sarri and Chelsea fans to take from the match.

New signing Jorginho and N’Golo Kante played brilliantly as a pair in the middle of the park, with Jorginho’s defensive discipline allowing Kante to tread uncharted waters and roam up-field, resulting in the Blue’s opening goal. Eden Hazard came on as a second-half substitute and looked electric. The Belgian will surely start here and Chelsea will go up a level simply with Hazard on the pitch. Chelsea looked assured at the back but were not really tested defensively. That will surely change here, so it will be interesting to see how the back four cope. Sarri is known for not rotating his defenders too much, so there will be plenty of time to gel, but this will be the first competitive match against a dangerous attacking opponent.

Bet on the match of the week between Chelsea and Arsenal at LV Bet

In truth, few would have expected Arsenal to win against Manchester City on Sunday. Optimism was in the air at the Emirates with a new manager in charge, but the match was a reminder that progress takes time, and also, more worringly, that many of the problems of the last few years remain.

Things won’t be any easier here. Suspect defending played a part in both of City’s goals last week, so Mustafi and Sokratis must improve their defensive partnership fast. There were traces of the Gunner’s attacking potential, especially after Lacazette was introduced in the second half. The problem seemed to be connecting defence to attack. The youngster Guendouzi, newly arrived at the Emirates, was thrown in at the deep end with a starting role in central midfield, and his inexperience showed. That was a surprise move by Emery and starting Lucas Torreira is surely the right move here. Arsenal fans must learn to be patient, but there’s a real possibility they will be starting this season with two defeats to direct competitors.

Prediction: Chelsea win – Both teams are adjusting to new managers and styles of play, but Chelsea seem a step ahead. Hazard returning to the team, coupled with home advantage, will give the Blues the edge here.

Rest of the Premier League Games

None of the rest of the top six face each other, with Spurs and Manchester City having favourable home games. Cardiff play their first home game of the season against Newcastle in the early kick-off, while the action goes all the way through to Monday night, where Crystal Palace host Liverpool.

  • Saturday 18 August 12:30
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 21/10 D: 21/10 A: 11/8

About the Game:

Cardiff got a taste of the difficulty Premier League last week when they were comfortably beaten by Bournemouth. Knowing Neil Warnock, he will focus on home games, where his Cardiff side will likely prove very tough to beat. This is the first home game of the season and expect Cardiff to put in a real shift.

Newcastle were unlucky not to take anything from last week’s game against Spurs. The Magpies have the most difficult opening fixtures of any team, with Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal waiting after this. That means that this is by fair the easiest game for some time and Newcastle must grab the three points or they could find themselves way off the pace.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Newcastle must go for the win here, but it won’t be easy, with Cardiff knowing results from home games against the teams close to them in the table will make or break their season.

Everton v Southampton

  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Saturday 18 August 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 19/20 D: 23/10 A: 3/1

About the Game:

Everton upped their performance significantly from pre-season and would likely have gotten three points were it not for Phil Jagielka’s red card. New boy Richarlison was electric, scoring two goals, but he went off injured. It seems it was just a case of cramp, but his fitness could be a deciding factor for this game.

Southampton played out to a goalless draw against Burnley last week. They may find it equally difficult to score here, with Everton likely to hand debuts to new defensive signings Mina and Zouma.

Prediction: Everton win – The home win is a decent price so we think it’s worth a shot. With reinforcements set to arrive in the Everton starting 11, they should have enough to win.

Leicester v Wolves

  • Venue: King Power
  • Saturday 18 August 15:00
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 21/20 D: 12/5 A: 13/5

About the Game:

Leicester played some good football in their opening match and were another team unlucky to lose their opening fixture. They can bounce straight back with a win here though and should be the one to take the game to the opponent.

Wolves may view the draw with Everton as a missed opportunity considering they played the majority of the game against ten men. In truth, even with a man deficit Everton were the better team. That should be a wake up call to Wolves that things will be a lot more difficult for them this season, but they should continue playing to their strengths.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Both teams play attacking football and have quality, so we can see goals here.

Tottenham v Fulham

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Saturday 18 August 15:00
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/4 D: 5/1 A: 9/1

About the Game:

Spurs were somewhat lucky to get a win last week against a plucky Newcastle. Many of their World Cup players started and were perhaps not fully fit, so expect Spurs to grow into this season. Nevertheless, they got the win, and with home advantage against a newly promoted side, you’d expect Spurs to do the business again here.

Fulham were taught a harsh lesson last week after they managed to find themselves a goal down at half-time despite being much the better team in the first half. They need to learn from that quickly and tighten up at the back, but there were many positives to be taken from their first match.

Prediction: Tottenham -1 Handicap – Fulham conceded two last week as their new players need time to gel. With Tottenham on home turf, we’d expect at least a couple of goals to be put past the new boys.

West Ham v Bournemouth

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Saturday 18 August 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Atwell
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 23/20 D: 23/10 A: 12/5

About the Game:

Few would have expected the Hammers to win away to Liverpool on the opening day, but the result and nature of the defeat will have fans worrying that the shocking defending of last season has not been fixed. West Ham have some very tough fixtures for the foreseeable future, so must pick up points in matches like this.

Bournemouth have the league’s longest serving current manager in Eddie Howe and the opening day performance and result reflected the stability at the club. Normally not strong starters, if the Cherries can find the consistency that has been lacking in seasons past, they could be a break out team this season. They will make things very difficult for the home side.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Unlike in the last match, West Ham’s newly acquired attacking talent will be able to shine, but their dodgy defence means that Bournemouth will also likely get on the scoresheet.

Burnley v Watford

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Sunday 19 August 13:30
  • Referee: Paul Tierny
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 11/8 D: 2/1 A: 9/4

About the Game:

Burnley started exactly how you would expect, with a strong defensive showing away from home. A similar challenge awaits, with Watford starting strongly. Goals will always be the problem for the Clarets, but with all their strikers fit again from pre-season niggles, they look set for a strong season.

Watford surprised many with such a strong performance in their opening fixture. Burnley will be a much tougher nut to crack, but Gracia will still likely play his usual attacking football.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – Burnley always keep things tight at home and we expect no different here.

Manchester City v Huddersfield

  • Venue: The Etihad
  • Sunday 19 August 13:30
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/12 D: 10/1 A: 20/1

About the Game:

If the Community Shield victory over Chelsea wasn’t enough of a statement, City gave their rivals another warning on Sunday, after easily brushing Arsenal aside. Can anyone stop them? If they can, it’s unlikely to be Huddersfield. This could get ugly for the visitors.

Huddersfield were easily done away with by Chelsea last week which doesn’t bode well for their chances here. This is the Terriers second season in the EPL and they need to do away with their smaller team mentality. The Terriers upset a number of teams last season and they need to go into these games with a much more positive approach.

Prediction: Manchester City -2 Handicap – If last week’s results are anything to go by then this could get ugly for Huddersfield. We expect a number of goals from the home team.

Brighton v Manchester United

  • Venue: AMEX
  • Sunday 19 August 16:00
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/1 D: 5/2 A: 8/11

About the Game:

Brighton’s away form was a hindrance last season and seems to have carried over. It was an underwhelming performance last weekend which they will be sure to amend here, but it certainly won’t be easy due to the calibre of the visitors.

United were somewhat lucky to win against Leicester, who were the more creative, flowing side. There were cameos for a few of the returning World Cup players, while the talismanic Paul Pogba played most of the match. It’s results that matter and United should only get stronger.

Prediction: Manchester United win – The first team players should return to the starting lineup and United should be a much stronger outfit.

Crystal Palace v Liverpool

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Monday 20 August 20:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 6/1 D: 15/4 A: 2/5

About the Game:

Crystal Palace continued their excellent pre-season form and won their opening fixture of the season. Newly promoted Fulham didn’t offer the kind of resistance that Liverpool will, so this one will be much more difficult. Palace are establishing themselves as a strong and difficult to beat team, so don’t count out a surprise result here.

Liverpool too were strong in pre-season and looked even more impressive in their opening win against West Ham. Their away form is the only weakness though, so it will be interesting to see how they cope with a team that will take the game to them.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Two attacking teams meet head to head in what we think could be an enthralling encounter.
