Premier League Matchday 17 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2018/19

What a week! Manchester City fell to their first defeat, before Liverpool and Tottenham both managed to pull off a last gasp escape from elimination from the Champions League. All four English clubs have qualified, along with Chelsea and Arsenal in the Europa League.

That means it’s back to business in the EPL. Those teams not featuring in European competitions have had a week’s rest and could pull off some surprises, while Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool could feel the strain.

Match of the Day

There are no doubts about this weekend’s match of the day. Liverpool host Manchester United in one of the world’s fiercest rivalries. Liverpool fielded a full-strength team in the Champions League on Tuesday, while the number of injuries at Old Trafford will also pose a selection headache for Jose Mourinho.

About the Game:

After Manchester City fell to defeat last weekend, Liverpool are now the only unbeaten team in the EPL. Along with those bragging rights, Liverpool’s dominant display against Napoli on Tuesday meant that they qualified for the knock-out stage of the Champions League in a real do or die game.

Liverpool were fantastic in that match. They pressed high, were relentless in closing down the opposition, and created chances aplenty. Play like that again and they will surely win again here. But maintaining that level of energy is difficult, if not impossible, especially with the games coming thick and fast. Playing a full strength side may mean there are some personnel changes here too, but there is one name that will surely play. After his hattrick last weekend, Mohamed Salah got the winning goal on Tuesday, as he is starting to hit the form of last season. Defensively there are a few issues. Joe Gomez is out, while Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also picked up injuries.

Bet on the Liverpool vs Manchester United game this weekend at Betfred

Manchester United had already qualified for the next stage of the Champions League before Wednesday’s match, but the number of injuries at Old Trafford meant that Jose Mourinho had limited options. Many players that played that game will likely start again here

Those problems are mostly defensive, which doesn’t bode well when facing one of the world’s most potent attacks. But United are starting to improve offensively lately. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are in fine goalscoring form, although Martial is a slight doubt for this match. The positives are somewhat limited then. José Mourinho has made defensive improvements a focus point for the coming weeks, but with most first-team defenders injured, that will be difficult. Anfield is a fortress currently, and few will see United becoming the first team to win there this year.

Prediction: Liverpool Win – United are so short of defenders that Liverpool will surely break through eventually. The Reds are unbeaten at home for a long time and it’s difficult to imagine that record ending here.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Manchester City host Everton, while Spurs and Arsenal have a favourable fixture to keep up the pressure in the top four.

  • Saturday 15 December 12:30
  • Referee: Craig Pawson
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/5 D: 11/2 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Is there are a mini injury crisis rearing its head at City? Kevin de Bruyne and Sergio Agüero are nearing returns, but David Silva, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Danilo, and reportedly Fernandinho, are all unavailable. Agüero could be back for this one but it is unlikely. That’s not to mention that the seemingly invincible Cityzens fell to their first league defeat of the season last weekend. However, that should only galvanize City to come back even stronger.

A last minute equaliser rescued a point for Everton last weekend. It’s three games without a win though, including winnable home fixtures against Newcastle and Watford. Everton are playing some good football and Richarlison is scoring goals, so while the results should follow, that is unlikely to start here.

Prediction: Manchester City Win & Over 2.5 goals – Defeat last weekend will likely only make City stronger. Everton will give it a good go, but we expect City to be back to their best.

Crystal Palace v Leicester

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Saturday 15 December 15:00
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 29/20 D: 11/5 A: 19/10

About the Game:

Palace fought hard against West Ham last weekend but fell to defeat in an entertaining game. They have home advantage here, but the Eagles are struggling to put a good run together. Talisman Wilfried Zaha is suspended for this match, which poses a big problem to a team already finding it difficult to score goals.

Leicester too aren’t exactly scoring freely, with the effects of a Jamie Vardy shaped absence from the team clear. Kelchi Ihenacho has replaced him, but has failed to take the opportunity. Nevertheless, defeat last weekend was the Foxes’ first in a while, so they need to keep positive and push for a result here.

Prediction: Under 2.5 goals – With both teams missing key strikers, we see a distinct lack of goals here.

Huddersfield v Newcastle

  • Venue: John Smith’s Stadium
  • Saturday 15 December 15:00
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/8 D: 21/10 A: 21/10

About the Game:

Three defeats in a row have seen Huddersfield fall back into the relegation zone. Aaron Mooy is out for around six weeks and will be a huge loss. Mooy is the Terrier’s most creative player, so Huddersfield’s biggest problem of creating and scoring goals could quickly return.

Newcastle have taken just one point from the last nine but they are a few places above Huddersfield in the table. The Magpies are scoring goals though and they may find joy here, especially if Huddersfield find it difficult to score themselves.

Prediction: Newcastle Draw no bet – With Mooy out, we see a chance for Newcastle to leave Yorkshire with three points.

Tottenham v Burnley

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Saturday 15 December 15:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/6 D: 13/2 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Tottenham might not have won at Barcelona, but a draw was enough to see them through to the knock-out stage of the Champions League. They played a full-strength side and that may cause some issues heading into this match and the hectic winter schedule, but Spurs will also be on a high and are in very good form.

Burnley finally got a win last weekend against Brighton. That was enough to lift them out of the relegation zone, but Sean Dyche will know they have their work cut-out if they want to pick up more points here.

Prediction: Tottenham Win & Both teams to score no – Spurs are in fine form and though fatigue may mean they are not at their explosive best here, we still expect them to comfortably win.

Watford v Cardiff

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Saturday 15 December 15:00
  • Referee: Andy Madley
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 8/13 D: 11/4 A: 9/2

About the Game:

Watford were seconds away from leaving Goodison Park with three points on Monday night. A draw wasn’t a bad result, but a win would have been Watford’s first in six matches. How disheartened the players will be from that late goal remains to be seen, but Watford definitely need a lift. Play well here though and they should finally return to winning ways.

Cardiff continue to surprise many. Last week’s win over Southampton could prove vital. Both Cardiff and Southampton are predicted by many to be relegation candidates, but if Cardiff can keep up this form – three wins in five games – then they will continue to pull away from the danger zone.

Prediction: Watford Win – It has been a while, but Watford haven’t played badly. A little bit of luck and they should finally get back to winning ways here.

Wolves v Bournemouth

  • Venue: Molineux
  • Saturday 15 December 15:00
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 1/1 D: 23/10 A: 14/5

About the Game:

Wolves barren spell seems well and truly over after back-to-back wins. Diego Jota has returned to the side and has two goals in two after a disappointing start to the season. Bournemouth are a tricky opposition, but Wolves will be confident of making it three wins in a row.

Bournemouth are establishing themselves as one of the teams knocking on the door of the top six, but recent results have shown just how far they are from cracking it. The Cherries struggle against the top teams and have just one win in their last five. The fixture lists eases somewhat from here, so expect the Cherries to start picking up points again,

Prediction: Both teams to score – Wolves will try to dictate the pace of this game, but they will have a hard task of keeping Bournemouth out.

Fulham v West Ham

  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Saturday 15 December 17:30
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 15/8 D: 12/5 A: 11/8

About the Game:

Fulham have conceded at least once in their last seven home games. New boss Ranieri has steadied the ship somewhat, but the visitors are high-scoring and high-flying at the moment. This will be a tough match for Fulham.

Despite losing talisman Marco Arnautovic to injury, West Ham are still winning and scoring freey. Chicharito has filled the gap left by Arnautovic with ease, while Felipe Anderson is starting to fulfill his potential. West Ham are in the middle of a very kind run of fixtures and they really are making the most of it. Expect that to continue here.

Prediction: Both teams to score – It seems a given that West Ham will score, but Fulham have attacking talent of their own. This could be a high-scoring encounter.

Brighton v Chelsea

  • Venue: AMEX
  • Sunday 16 December 13:30
  • Referee: Stuart Attwell
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 13/2 D: 16/5 A: 2/9

About the Game:

Brighton were disappointing last week and lost to struggling Burnley. They now face an opponent filled with confidence and must improve defensively – the Seagulls are without a clean sheet in six matches.

Chelsea pulled off almost the impossible last week after beating Manchester City. It was the return to form Sarri demanded and he deserves praise. Chelsea should emerge from what was a difficult period and pick up more points, especially with Eden Hazard returning to form. However, Chelsea have lost their last two away games, so this is not necessarily a given.

Prediction: Under 3.5 goals – Brighton have conceded just one goal in each of their last four, while Chelsea struggle somewhat away from home.

Southampton v Arsenal

  • Venue: St Marys
  • Sunday 16 December 13:30
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 14/5 D: 13/5 A: 10/11

About the Game:

Despite a new manager in-place, little seems to have changed at St Mary’s. Two defeats in a row will likely be followed by a third, as the most in-form team in Europe pays a visit on Sunday. Southampton not only need to tighten up defensively, but they need to find their edge offensively too.

Aresnal remain unbeaten, though it was much tougher than expected against Huddersfield last weekend. Defensive injuries are the problem at the moment. Monreal and Koscielny have returned at just the right time, but they are not match fit. Nevertheless, Arsenal have outscored opponents so far this season, so why change that here?

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Arsenal are rested and should re-find their potency upfront. Their defensive weakness means that Southampton may get some joy too.
