Premier League Matchday 17 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

There’s yet another midweek set of fixtures this week, with all Premier League teams in action.

Tuesday night sees three games, with Burnley starting us off against Stoke, followed by a London clash between Crystal Palace and Watford, and a match between Huddersfield and Chelsea. The rest of the games are played over the course of Wednesday night.

Match of the Day

Another London derby, this time between two teams at different ends of the table. Arsenal haven’t won either of their last two, while West Ham, despite still sitting in the relegation zone, seem to have turned a corner under Moyes.

  • Quick Glance OddsH: 9/2 D: 16/5 A: 13/20

About the Game:

Things didn’t start well immediately after David Moyes took charge at West Ham, but after Saturday’s win against Chelsea and the brave preceding performance against Manchester City the week before, things are looking up for the Hammers.

The team look more organised and seem to putting in much more effort and the three points were well deserved against a lacklustre Chelsea. This is another tough test where the Hammers will likely set up similarly, with a five man defensive back-line playing out to a pacey and tricky front three of Lanzini, Antonio, and Arnautovic. The energy levels expelled against Chelsea could have some influence here though. Every player gave their all, but Michail Antonio especially looked to be suffering towards the end of the match. West Ham have three very winnable games after this match in which they could really turn their season around, so another point here would be a great way to kick on and put the first half of the season behind them.

Bet on the match of the week between Arsenal and Manchester United at 888 Sport

Arsenal came close to losing two on the bounce on Sunday, but for a late goal from substitute Olivier Giroud. Arsenal didn’t look their usual lively selves and were especially poor in defence. That is largely down to the absence of Shkodran Mustafi, who is touch-and-go whether to be fit in time for this one.

Another casualty is Aaron Ramsey, who has a hamstring complaint, the extent of which is not yet known. He has been fantastic for Arsenal this season and would be another big loss. Wenger will have a few decisions on his hands on then. The fixtures over the Christmas period are mostly kind, but fatigue was evident at the weekend. This match may come too soon for a number of key players and Wenger must decide who to rest. But this really is a game Arsenal should win. Arsenal got lucky with both Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United also dropping points at the weekend, but that won’t happen often. The Gunners are currently just outside of the top 4 and if they want to make it in, then they really should win fixtures like this.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – West Ham have improved massively in defence under Moyes and they will set up in a similar fashion to the last game here, as they look to shut Arsenal out and grab a goal on the counter.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Our game of the week is on Wednesday night, but there’s also three fixtures on Tuesday too. All the top six have very favourable fixtures, with Chelsea facing the highest faced opposition in 12th place Huddersfield.

Burnley v Stoke

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Tuesday 12th December 19.45
  • Referee: Mike Jones
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/10 D: 11/5 A: 13/5

About the Game:

Burnley got back to their business of keeping clean sheets last weekend, though they were helped significantly by a red card for their opponents. Nevertheless, the Clarets got the job done and put in another solid performance. Stoke are struggling with consistency at the moment, but can turn it on and pose a threat. That won’t matter to Burnley though, who are as solid as they come these days.

An early own goal set the tone for Stoke’s last match against Tottenham. Eventually losing 5-1 it was another day to forget for Mark Hughes’ men. Consistency has been the problem, but with a number of teams below them picking up points at the weekend, Stoke are slipping down the table and are now just one win above the relegation zone. This is as difficult a place to travel as anywhere and the Potters will do well to emerge from Turf Moor with any points.

Prediction: Burnley Draw no bet – Burnley are solid and organised at home and barring a big slice of bad luck, they shouldn’t lose this match.

Crystal Palace v Watford

  • Venue: Selhurst Park
  • Tuesday 12th December 20:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 5/4 D: 5/2 A: 12/5

About the Game:

Crystal Palace again didn’t lose, but yet again, they couldn’t win. That’s three draws in a row now for Roy Hodgson’s men and four in five. They did win the other match in that period though, meaning they are unbeaten in five games, which is impressive for the bottom placed team. You get the feeling that Palace will push on once they get that win, which must surely come soon.

An early red card meant Watford had their work cut out for them on Sunday and they fell to defeat against Burnley. The Hornets are without a win in three now and face a Palace team that, though bottom, are in great form. This will be a tricky match then in which little attention should be played to where the teams are in the table.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Both teams can’t keep a clean sheet but are in good goal-scoring form.

Huddersfield v Chelsea

  • Venue: Kirklees Stadium
  • Tuesday 12th December 20:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 19/2 D: 4/1 A: 4/11

About the Game:

After a long run without a win, Huddersfield finally got three points with a great home win against Brighton on Saturday. That meant they leapfrogged the Seagulls into 12th place. Steve Mounie is back in the starting lineup and marked that with two goals. Huddersfield’s problem was scoring goals, so perhaps they can start to recreate some of their early season form with Mounie back in favour.

Chelsea fell to a shock defeat against West Ham on Saturday and with it, you’d have to think their title chances are gone. The Blues were disappointing and while they created some chances, they looked out of ideas against an organised West Ham defence. This could be more of the same, as the effect of a heavy schedule looks apparent in the legs of many players. How Chelsea respond here could be crucial to the rest of their season.

Prediction: U 3.5 goals – Huddersfield are better at home and while Chelsea will look to bounce back, it certainly won’t be easy.

Newcastle v Everton

  • Venue: St Jame’s Park
  • Wednesday 13th December 19:45
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 7/5 D: 23/10 A: 9/4

About the Game:

Newcastle’s rapid fall down the table continues, with the Magpies now without a win in seven games. They were unlucky against Leicester at the weekend, but it’s results that counts. The problems off the pitch are well known and Rafa Benitez is hoping for reinforcements in the January transfer window. Right now, it looks essential that Newcastle get some help, before it’s too late.

Despite doing little in the opposition’s half all match, Everton managed to earn a point in the Merseyside derby. A soft penalty led to the goal, which Everton likely wouldn’t have gotten otherwise, but it won’t matter to Big Sam. In fact, the new manager likely set his team up to play like that and if it continues to get the Toffees points, then i’m sure the fans won’t mind.

Prediction: Everton Draw no bet – While it’s perhaps not wise to bet on Everton to win of late, they are much more organsied with their new manager and are on a good run of results.

Southampton v Leicester

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Wednesday 13th December 19:45
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 23/20 D: 12/5 A: 11/4

About the Game:

A late equaliser denied Southampton a win on Sunday in a match that the Saints should have won. The good news for the Saints is that they finally seemed to have solved the problem of which striker to play with. Charlie Austin has four goals in as many games, which is great news for a team that were really struggling for goals earlier in the season. This is a tough enough match, but Southampton face Chelsea, Spurs, and Manchester United in the next four games following this.

Leicester made hard work of beating Newcastle at the weekend, but they got there in the end. That was the Foxes third win on the bounce and moves them up to eighth in the table. Riyad Mahrez got on the score-sheet for the second time in three matches and is looking the player of a few season back. This could be an interesting match up between two times that are improving.

Prediction: Both teams to score – With Charlie Austin, Southampton have a proven goal-scorer, while Leicester are scoring for fun of late.

Swansea v Manchester City

  • Venue: Liberty Stadium
  • Wednesday 13th December 19:45
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 14/1 D: 6/1 A: 2/9

About the Game:

A fantastic and vital win against fellow strugglers West Brom meant Swansea don’t sit rock bottom of the table. Three points here seems an impossible task though. Swansea’s best hope will likely be to take West Ham’s approach of a few weeks back and defend as strongly as possible against City’s attacking talent. Fatigue could be a factor for both teams and Swansea will have to hope that it helps them more than City. The positive for Swansea is that Wilfred Bony is scoring goals, though few will expect him to bag here.

The match of the season up to this point took place on Sunday between the two Manchester clubs. City emerged victorious and many now believe that the race for the title is officially over. This could well be true, with the gap at the top now 11 points. The toll taken remains to be seen, but City’s squad is strong and deep enough to offer up a number of great players that didn’t feature in the derby, with Sergio Agüero being one. Surely another routine win for the Citizens is on the cards.

Prediction: Manchester City win to nil – Swansea offer little attacking threat at the best of times, while City seem sure to win here.

Liverpool v West Brom

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Wednesday 13th December 20:00
  • Referee: Paul Tierney
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/9 D: 6/1 A: 14/1

About the Game:

Liverpool will surely feel like it was two points dropped, rather than a point gained, from the Merseyside derby on Sunday. The Reds were by far the better team, but a soft penalty prevented them the win. Klopp’s decision to rest both Coutinho and Firmino should be brought into question, as the two are in fine form and Liverpool may have scored more with them on the pitch. The draw means that Liverpool extend their unbeaten run to seven games, but that really was a missed opportunity to put a gap between them and 5th place Arsenal.

A late winner sunk West Brom on Saturday, with the Baggies position becoming more and more precarious by the match. They’re just a win above the relegation zone now, with all the teams below them picking up points last weekend. This is as tough a match as they come and West Brom must shape up soon, or they could be in a desperate battle by the time the New Year comes.

Prediction: Liverpool win – Coutinho and Firmino should come straight back into the team and trouble an out of sorts Baggies’ defence.

Manchester United v Bournemouth

  • Venue: Old Trafford
  • Wednesday 13th December 20:00
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/7 D: 5/1 A: 11/1

About the Game:

Defeat against leaders City on Sunday means that, to many, United won’t be winners of the Premier League this year. United were disappointing and allowed Guardiola’s City to play their way and control the match. Pogba was conspicuous in his absence, but the Frenchman will still be missing through suspension here. Lukaku was also anoynmous, though he should have squared the score late in the game. His lack of goals is worrying, but United still should have what it takes to win here.

Bournemouth couldn’t win on Saturday, but a draw was their second in a row and means that their generally good results continue, as they edge up the table after a disastrous start to the season. The fixtures turn nasty from this point though. Bournemouth will face Liverpool and Manchester City after this match, meaning they could be pulled into the battle around the relegation places in a few weeks.

Prediction: Manchester United win – Bournemouth are difficult to beat of late, but United have to win, and should do so.

Tottenham v Brighton

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Wednesday 13th December 20:00
  • Referee: Bobby Madley
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/4 D: 11/2 A: 14/1

About the Game:

Tottenham finally got back to winning ways in style after putting five past Stoke on Sunday. This is another very winnable fixture, but Spurs have paid the price for their poor run. They’re now in sixth place, though just two points from fourth place. Harry Kane bagged two and Tottenham fans will be hoping for more of the same here. Amazingly, that was Tottenham’s first win since the 5th November.

After a great run of form throughout October and most of November, Brighton are struggling of late. Defeat to Huddersfield was the Seagull’s third loss in four games, so fans will be justified in being slightly worried about this match. If Tottenham play like they did on Saturday, Brighton could be on the wrong end of another big defeat.

Prediction: Tottenham win – Saturday’s win should be more than just a one off as Spurs look to get on track for the season.
