Premier League Matchday 13 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2017/18

Last weekend didn’t disappoint on the excitement front as there were goals aplenty throughout the weekend. All the big guns – bar Tottenham, who lost in the North London derby to Arsenal – recorded wins to keep up the pace at the top of the table.

This weekend, the action kicks off on Friday night, as Leicester travel to London to play struggling West Ham. It’s David Moyes’ first home game in charge of the Hammers and he can expect little patience from the increasingly frustrated fans. The big clash of the weekend is without doubt Liverpool against Chelsea. Both teams are in good form and will not want to drop points against a rival.

Match of the Day

We head to Anfield for our match of the day. The late kick-off on Saturday afternoon could be a cracker. Both Liverpool and Chelsea are almost back to full strength in terms of personnel and we expect Liverpool to take the bull by the horns and go for all three points here. That said, Chelsea have become experts at frustrating quality opponents and sneaking a slender victory. This could be a fascinating encounter.

About the Game:

After an emphatic 3-0 win against Southampton at the weekend made it three wins in a row, it appeared the high-flying Liverpool were back and the patchy form of September and October was long behind them. This sentiment was further justified at half-time of their Champions League match against Sevilla on Tuesday as a fine first-half performance saw Liverpool three up at the break away from home. Then came the second half.

A total collapse saw the Reds concede three goals to draw the match 3-3 and fail to guarantee themselves qualification as group winners. Liverpool’s defensive and mental fragility has once again been brought to the fore then. Jürgen Klopp said that his team simply stopped playing after the first half.

A nod to the positives though, of which there are many. Sadio Mané and Philippe Coutinho are back fit and scoring goals. Adam Lallana too is back in training and will strengthen the team further. Liverpool have every chance in this game, but they will need to be much more switched on for the full 90 minutes, or a ruthless Chelsea could make them pay.

Bet on the match of the week between Liverpool and Chelsea at Mr Green

Chelsea made no such mistakes of their own in the Champions League, with a comfortable win over Qarabag. The Blues are assured qualification to the next round, but will need at least a draw in their last game to go through as group leaders. Chelsea were convincing in the Premier League last weekend too. Winning by the same four goal margin as on Wednesday, Álvaro Morata and Eden Hazard did the business up front, while Cesc Fàbregas pulled the strings in midfield.

After this match, Chelsea have an extremely kind run of fixtures over the hectic Christmas period which could really see them pick up the pace on the leaders. With N’Golo Kanté back from injury, the team is once again back to full strength. Looking to this match though, Chelsea’s biggest enemy could be time. They will play just 72 hours after the match in Azerbaijan and will of course need to fly back to London in that time. Liverpool have an extra 24 hours preparation time and if they are refreshed and play their usual high-energy style, any fatigue among the Chelsea ranks will be quickly found out.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – While Liverpool will play attacking football, Chelsea are one of the best defensive teams in the league. With fatigue a possible factor, we think the excitement will be limited here, with a draw being a good result for Chelsea away from home.

Rest of the Premier League Games

The action starts on Friday night with struggling West Ham hosting Leicester. There’s also a packed Sunday schedule with three games, including leaders Manchester City playing away at Huddersfield.

  • Quick Glance OddsH: 8/5 D: 23/10 A: 13/8

About the Game:

Sunday certainly wasn’t the result that David Moyes and West Ham supporters were hoping for from the first game under their new manager. Opponents Leicester have been rejuvenated after sacking Craig Shakespeare and appointing Claude Puel, while Crystal Palace have also significantly improved under their new manager. Moyes hasn’t had an instant impact, but this is his first home game. Nevertheless, he will be granted little patience from the fans and the pressure is already on. The players will have to play much better than they did on Sunday to beat an in-form Leicester.

Leicester lost at the weekend, but with their opponents being Manchester City, they can be forgiven. That was their first defeat in six games and they have been on the rise for a number of weeks now. Vardy and Mahrez will be licking their lips at the chance of facing the Hammer’s disorganized defence.

Prediction: O 2.5 goals – West Ham’s defence is currently in disarray and they were unlucky not to score at least one last week, while Leicester are in good goal-scoring form.

About the Game:

Palace once again played well, but once again couldn’t earn the three points last week. A draw was perhaps a fair result, though the Palace fans will continue to protest Everton’s penalty, that was earned seemingly from a dive by Niasse, for which the player has been retrospectively suspended. A home game against Stoke is no gimme, but with Zaha finding scoring form and Benteke back from injury, confidence is gradually growing at Selhurst Park.

Stoke earned a hard-fought point against Brighton on Monday night. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting got on the scoresheet for the third time this season as Stoke made it three games unbeaten. Consistency has been a big problem for the Potters so far this season, but avoiding defeat here would mean they have put together a decent run. Nevertheless, they sit precariously in 15th place and will need to start winning more games; they’ve won just three all season.

Prediction: Both teams to score – Both teams have had little problems finding the net – but big problems in defending – of late.

Manchester United v Brighton

  • Quick Glance OddsH: 2/11 D: 6/1 A: 12/1

About the Game:

Despite going behind, Manchester United showed character and emerged comfortable winners last weekend against Newcastle. It was a triumphant return to the team for Paul Pogba, who notched a goal to mark a fantastic performance. His influence on the team cannot be understated and confidence at Old Trafford will be back up after a testing run of results which saw United lose ground on leaders and neighbours Manchester City. A surprise loss in Basel on Wednesday shouldn’t dampen spirits too much, as United have already qualified for the next round of the Champions League.

Brighton are proving a very tough nut to crack for many teams this season. A draw against Stoke on Monday made it five games unbeaten and the Seagulls are sitting pretty in the top half of the table. They are likely to lose that unbeaten run here, but Brighton’s season will not be judged on away trips to the league’s best. Brighton fans will be looking forward to a trip up North and should enjoy their time, whatever the result.

Prediction: Manchester United win – A lot will depend defensively on whether Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are fit, but United’s attacking talent meant they fared fine without the pair last weekend.

Newcastle v Watford

  • Venue: St James’ Park
  • Saturday 25th November 15:00
  • Referee: Chris Kavanagh
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 21/20 D: 23/10 A: 13/5

About the Game:

Defeat to Manchester United was the third in succession for Newcastle. This bad run followed a run of just one defeat in seven games for the Magpies. They will face three of the top six over the next seven games, so will be looking to fixtures like this to pick up points. Next week’s match is against West Brom, who may be an easier opponent than Watford, who are back on a high after getting back to winning ways.

West Ham were probably the ideal opponent for Watford to return to winning ways after three defeats in a row. Watford too have a far from friendly fixture list over the next few weeks. Manchester United, Spurs, then Burnley await after this match, so Marco Silva will be expecting Richarlison and co to do the business against an out of shape Newcastle.

Prediction: Watford Draw no bet – Newcastle are low on confidence and struggling for goals, while Watford will be looking to make it back to back wins.

Tottenham v West Brom

  • Venue: Wembley
  • Saturday 25th November 15:00
  • Referee: Mike Jones
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/4 D: 9/2 A: 11/1

About the Game:

Another disappointing weekend for Spurs meant that the battle for the top four tightened up significantly last weekend. Losing to Arsenal in a North London derby will always be difficult to swallow, but the manner of the defeat will have concerned Spurs fans. Neither Harry Kane nor Deli Alli looked fit, as the Spur’s attack was basically non-existant. Nevertheless, Spurs turned it on in the Champions League, coming from behind against Dortmund to win 2-1. Kane scored from an Alli assist and the two will have to recreate this connection in the league. Spurs have struggled against defensive minded teams, such as their failure to beat Swansea at Wembley number of weeks back, so this is far from a given.

With patience finally running out on the Hawthorns, Tony Pulis was relieved of his duty as manager of West Brom this week. The Baggies are on a terrible run, without a win since the second week of the league. Fresh management might help get them out of the hole they are currently in, but this is about a tough a fixture as possible. Few will expect the Baggies to take anything away from here.

Prediction: Tottenham -1 handicap – Spurs simply cannot afford to drop any more points. Kane scored in midweek and usually scores his goals in batches.

Swansea v Bournemouth

  • Venue: Liberty Stadium
  • Saturday 25th November 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Attwell
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/8 D: 11/5 A: 17/10

About the Game:

Another comfortable defeat for Swansea means they are still in the relegation zone. The Swans never really threatened against Burnley, despite Paul Clement making a number of personnel changes, as his side succumbed to their fourth consecutive defeat, their sixth in seven matches. Bournemouth are also at the wrong end of the table, but the contrast in form and attitude is huge. Swansea’s last win came at home and they will have to use that to their advantage here.

Bournemouth had the worst start to the season of any club, bar Crystal Palace, but things seem now well and truly on the up. Two wins in a row and three wins in four mean they have rocketed up the table and are now in 13th place, ahead of Southampton. There’s even more good news for the Cherries, as Callum Wilson marked his return to the team with a hat-trick. The striker has suffered with injuries over the last few years, but he showed what he can do while fit. Bournemouth will be hoping for more of the same here.

Prediction: Bournemouth Draw no bet – The Cherries are on a great run and could make it three wins in a row, while Swansea have lost their last four.

Southampton v Everton

  • Venue: St Marys’
  • Sunday 26th November 13:30
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 17/20 D: 5/2 A: 16/5

About the Game:

Southampton looked completely devoid of ideas and guile last week against Liverpool. While their opponents were partly the cause of that, things simply aren’t working for the Saints at the moment. A very poor run has seen them slip to 14th position. While they’re not exactly defending well, the main problems seem to be upfront. With Shane Long, Manolo Gabbiadini, and Charlie Austin to choose from, you’d think Pellegrino would be spoiled for choice. However, none of the three are in-form are Southampton are suffering as a result.

Everton avoided defeat last weekend against Palace, but they do have the referee to thank at least somewhat for that. Unsworth stuck with Niasse, who again helped his side to a point, but the striker is suspended after retrospective action from the FA. Talk on Goodison is mostly focused on the manager position and not the football at the moment. Everton want to take Marco Silva from Watford, but aside from the money, there seems little attraction. Everton have improved since the departure of Koeman, but need a few results to climb the table.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Struggling for goals, Southampton’s best approach of late seems to prevent the opposition from scoring.

Burnley v Arsenal

  • Venue: Vicarage Road
  • Sunday 26th November 14:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 9/2 D:16/5 A: 11/20

About the Game:

Another game, another win for Burnley. While the season may have started with the goal of 40 points are safety in the league, Burnley are currently on course to meet that target by New Year. They’re currently level on points with opponents Arsenal and a win here could get fans dreaming big. Sean Dyche won’t let himself or his team get ahead of themselves though, but with Burnley as solid as they are, you wouldn’t put it past them sneaking a win here. That tightened things up in the battle to make the top four considerably. The Gunners have won every home game this season, but their away form is markedly different. Just one win and one draw away from home this season is the reason they are currently outside of the top four. After last week’s win Arsenal will be on a high though. This will be an interesting encounter.

Arsenal made a huge statement last weekend as they dominated the North London derby and beat Spurs comfortably. With Sanchez back in form, the Gunners have a great chance to climb up the table over the Christmas period. Play every game like they did last week and they will do so, but the problem has been their away form, where they haven’t been able to replicate the home performances that have seen them win every home game.

Prediction: U 2.5 goals – Turf Moor is currently a fortress, while this is a testing match for both teams who are just one point outside the top four.

Huddersfield v Manchester City

  • Venue: Kirkless Stadium
  • Sunday 26th November 16:00
  • Referee: Andrew Marriner
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 14/1 D: 6/1 A: 11/5

About the Game:

Huddersfield lost their third away game in succession at the weekend with a smashing from Bournemouth. Even with a man advantage, Huddersfield couldn’t capitalise. While their home form is much better, they face the best team in the league and few will be expecting them to get anything from the match. Trying to frustrate the visitors will surely be the tactic, but against City, it’s usually a case of when, rather than if, the opponent scores.

There’s not much to be said of City that hasn’t already been written this season. Leicester put up a good fight last week, but City came out on top. Their 16 game winning streak almost came to an end on Tuesday in the Champions League, but a late goal from Raheem Sterling meant it’s now 17 wins in a row. Few will bet against them making it 18 games on Sunday.

Prediction: Manchester City win to nil – A City win is almost a given these days, but with Kompany back, the chances of a clean sheet are also extremely high.
