Premier League Matchday 02 Preview – Prediction + Tips 2019/20

Week two of the Premier League season is nearly upon us. Last week’s action saw the big boys come up trumps, with both Liverpool and City continuing last season’s trend of domination. Newcomers, Aston Villa gave Spurs a fright, whilst Billy Sharp’s heroics rescued a point for the Blades. This week sees some more tasty fixtures on the schedule, with City vs Spurs being the pick of them all.

We have prepared our betting tips for each game, and you can find them by clicking directly on the links below. Our game of the week takes place on Saturday evening.

Match of the Day

Our game of the week is one that everyone is anticipating and can already be seen as one that could define the title race this season. It looks like this could be a cracker, and a repeat of last year’s CL semi-final would be nice!

Manchester City v Tottenham

  • Venue: Etihad
  • Sunday 18 August 17:30
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 4/11 D: 17/4 A: 7/1

About the Game:

Game week 1 saw both teams victorious, with Man City demolishing West Ham. City are clearly the strongest team in the league and their squad-depth is unparalleled. Jose Mourinho joked that there were four teams capable of challenging for the title this year, City, Liverpool, Spurs, and City’s B team. It is truly a testament to how good they really are, and is a scary prospect for the rest of the league.

City have won their last four PL games against Spurs, and Raheem Sterling loves to play against them. He scored three last week, and he in his past six games against the Londoners, he has been directly involved in six goals. It would seem he is set to score again this weekend!

Bet on Manchester City v Tottenham at Betway

It’s hard to see past city in this one, they have won 14 home games in a row. Even so, Harry Kane’s August curse seems to be well behind him and he bagged two goals last week. He’ll be hoping for a repeat in this game.

With both team still fresh, there are very few injury concerns to content with. City will be without Sane for at least six months, whilst Spurs are still waiting for Deli Alli to be fit. Overall, it’s going to be an exciting game and the rest of the league will be able to tell how good City really are. It’s hard to look past them winning, and the bookies certainly think that this will be the case.

Prediction: Manchester City to win and Raheem Sterling to score – Try to improve the odds on offer by combing it with the additional bet.

Rest of the Premier League Games

The first game of the week takes place on Saturday lunch-time with Arsenal facing off against Burnley. See all of our predictions in the boxes below!

Arsenal v Burnley

  • Venue: Emirates Stadium
  • Saturday 17 August 12:30
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 3/10 D: 9/2 A: 9/1

About the Game:

Arsenal won their first game of the season with a pretty weak side. They’ll be hoping that Nicolas Pepe starts, and that Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac can make an appearance after their trouble with gang related violence.

Burnley opened the season with a mightily impressive victory against Southampton. Star striker Ashley Barnes scored two wonderful goals and they will be hoping for more of the same. Even so, it feels as though James Tarkowski will have a lot more to do this weekend that the previous one! It’s going to be a tough game for the Clarets.

Prediction: Arsenal to win – It’s hard to look past the fact that Burnley have never taken a point against Arsenal in the PL.

Aston Villa v Bournemouth

  • Venue: Villa Park
  • Saturday 17 August 15:00
  • Referee: Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/10 D: 12/5 A: 21/10

About the Game:

Villa performed admirably in the first game back in the Premier League, with John McGinn showing his Premier League quality. They’ll be looking to get their first points of the season, and it could be a distinct possibility in this game.

Bournemouth started the season with a disappointing draw, and they’ll be looking to get maximum points here. In their previous three away games, they have scored three goals in each game, however, they only managed to win one, drawing one, and losing the other. We could expect a goal-fest this weekend.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals – Both teams have the ability to score a lot, but the defences seem to be lacking. We see a goal fest in this one.

Brighton v West Ham

  • Venue: American Express Community Stadium
  • Saturday 17 August 15:00
  • Referee: Anthony Taylor
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 31/20 D: 9/4 A: 15/8

About the Game:

Brighton started the campaign with a wonderful away victory against Watford. They have spent wisely this summer and it seems their transfer policy has paid off. What’s more, talisman Glenn Murray has score six PL goals against West Ham, more than any other club he has faced. The Hammers will be quaking in their boots at the thought of him tormenting them some more.

West Ham are on a current winning streak of 4 away from home. They will be looking to forget about last week’s drubbing at the hands of City and right the ship. Even so, they have a terrible record against the Seagulls and may have to wait until next week to pick up some points.

Prediction: Brighton to win – Form and history are on the Seagull’s side, and we expect them to walk away with 3 points in this one.

Everton v Watford
Everton Form Guide DWDDL
Watford Form Guide LDLDW
  • Venue: Goodison Park
  • Saturday 17 August 15:00
  • Referee: Lee Mason
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 8/11 D: 14/5 A: 15/4

About the Game:

After an exciting summer for the Toffees, their season started off with a bore 0-0 draw. Even so, Everton haven’t lost to Watford in their last six encounters, and it doesn’t seem likely to change here. We expect Goodison to be rocking, and many of the new stars to make a fruitful first home appearance.

Watford had a disastrous opening day, losing 3-0 at home. It doesn’t look likely to get much better this weekend. Watford have never won at Everton, losing 11 and drawing two. It’s a terrible record, and the Hornets don’t seem to have the ability to change it.

Prediction: Everton to win – Marco Silva will get one over on his former club, and we wouldn’t be surpirsed if Moise Kean scores too.

Norwich City v Newcastle United
Norwich City Form Guide WLWWD
Newcastle United Form Guide WDWLD
  • Venue: Carrow Road
  • Saturday 17 August 15:00
  • Referee: Stuart Attwell
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 5/4 D: 23/10 A: 23/10

About the Game:

This is the toughest game of the week to call. Norwich haven’t lost to Newcastle at home since 2006, the last six meetings. Their opening weekend was a tough challenge, yet their attacking style endeared them to the neutral fans. We can see this one being an entertaining game that could go either way.

Newcastle tend to struggle away from home, and none of Newcastle’s last four four managers won their first away PL game. Something that is not a good omen for Steve Bruce. It will be interesting to see how things pan out, however the last time they met in this competition it was something of a goal fest, with 13 goals being scored between the sides during the 2015/16 season.

Prediction: Both teams to score – It’s hard to separate them, but we think it will be an attacking game, with goals.

Southampton v Liverpool
Southampton Form Guide LLLLL
Liverpool Form Guide DWDWW
  • Venue: St. Mary’s Stadium
  • Saturday 17 August 15:00
  • Referee: Andre Mariner
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 11/2 D: 15/4 A: 4/9

About the Game:

Southampton did not look good against Burnley and we’d be surprised if they fare any better this weekend. Their defence is terribly weak and we can’t see them put up much of a fight against the powerhouse that is Liverpool.

Coming off a midweek Super Cup victory, Liverpool may be a little tired. Nevertheless, they have the ability to see this one out. Mo Salah loves playing on the south coast, and in 12 games against teams from the region, he has scored a whopping 14. The talisman will continue his fine form this weekend, and Liverpool will go home happy.

Prediction: Liverpool to win (-1.5 Asian handicap) – The Reds will win this one, and comfortably, look to increase the odds with a handicap.

Sheffield United v Crystal Palace
Sheffield United Form Guide WDLDD
Crystal Palace Form Guide WWWLW
  • Venue: Bramall Lane
  • Sunday 18 August 13:00
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 6/4 D: 21/10 A: 2/1

About the Game:

Sheffield United came back to the Premier League with a bang. Bill Sharp’s late equaliser sparked joyous scenes from the fans and demonstrated the never say die attitude of the squad. The season will be a long and tough one, but games like this one is where they need to pick up points. It’s difficult to see which way this one goes.

Palace lost a couple of players over the summer and looked like a squad lacking a spark. Zaha started on the bench, and the Eagles will be hoping he can but the summer transfer window behind him. They really need him to show up big in the next months, otherwise, they may find themselves dragged into a relegation battle.

Prediction: Draw – It’s hard to separate these two teams at the beginning of the season, but it seams both will be near the bottom come the end of the year.

Chelsea v Leicester City
Chelsea Form Guide LDDDW
Leicester City Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Stamford Bridge
  • Sunday 18 August 16:30
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 7/10 D: 11/4 A: 4/1

About the Game:

Chelsea’s youth experiment continues, and after an opening week drubbing it will be interesting to see how they respond. Tammy Abraham was at the wrong end of some disgusting abuse after the Super Cup loss, so he may not start. It will be interesting to see if Lampard involves Kante from the start after leaving him on the bench last week.

Leicester lost Harry Maguire and didn’t replace him. They may face sterner tests than Chelsea’s frontmen, but it will still be a good measuring stick to see how they fare against elite level competition. Interestingly, this will be Leicesters 500th PL match, although we don’t feel there will be much cause for celebration come the final whistle.

Prediction: Chelsea to win – Frank Lampard’s first game at Stamford Bridge will end in victory for the Blues legend.

Wolves v Man United
Wolves Form Guide DDWLL
Manchester United Form Guide LWDLL
  • Venue: Molineux Stadium
  • Monday 19 August 20:00
  • Referee: Jon Moss
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 23/10 D: 23/10 A: 5/4

About the Game:

Wolves started their PL campaign with a draw, however they thrashed Pyunik in the midweek Europa League fixture and will be brimming with confidence. They are a team that can really perform well when the time calls and they always seem to turn up against the Red Devils. We would not be surprised if they won on Monday.

Manchester United had a wonderful start to the season, with Rashford and co. producing a scintillating display against Chelsea. However, they still looked weak in midfield, and can be exploited by the right approach. They seem like a team that will thrive with confidence, so it is important to get under their skin early.

Prediction: Wolves to win – The surprise of the day. Ole’s magic doesn’t last so long, and Wolves show United everything isn’t rosy.
