Match of the Day

Another two of the ‘big six’ go head-to-head in our match of the day. United struggled for goals in their last game against Chelsea but hit five in their Champions League game. Arsenal will be looking to bounce back after defeat against Leicester.

Manchester United v Arsenal

  • Venue: Old Trafford
  • Sunday 1 November 16:30
  • Referee: Mike Dean
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/1 D:45/17 A: 12/5

About the Game:

The weekend brings us another high profile top six battle between two managers who played for their current sides. Man United beat the Blues home and away last season including the famous 4 – 0 win on the first day of the campaign, despite Chelsea being the better side in the first half.

Manchester United have not won against The Gunners in the last two consecutive seasons, settling for a draw at home, and losing by a 2 – 0 scoreline on their travels. They have a chance to redeem this record, especially with Arsenal not playing particularly great, to restore their pride against their fiercest rivals in the Premier League era.

The Red Devils have been turning the corner after a shaky start to the season. They have been criticised for not fielding their best side, focusing on team rotation that breeds instability especially with new players in their ranks not helping their improvement. Bruno Fernandes is the darling of Old Trafford with the Portuguese man starting every game since joining from Sporting Lisbon. Starting a match with 150m (Paul Pogba and Donny Van Beek) on the bench seems like a very strange investment, even for the wealthiest side in England.

33-year old Edison Cavani is third with the most goals, behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, with 250 goals in 413 appearances, two goals ahead of Premier League legend Sergio Aguero. He managed to shine in the ranks of sides such as Palermo, Napoli without great talent beside him and should flourish around the star-studded United midfield. Fans will be hoping he starts a Premier League game for the first time, with Anthony Martial suspended for this clash, a front two of Cavani and Rashford would be a terrifying prospect for the Arsenal defence.

Bet on United v Arsenal at bet365

Too many squabbles in the Arsenal side has taken a toll on the good football and results they have been enjoying since Mikel Arteta took over. Mesut Ozil who played alongside his manager, is their highest-paid player, arguably their best talent, and the most experienced player but has been frozen out of the Premier League and Europa squads for issues only known between the two. 19-year old William Saliba is yet to be given a chance with the manager sticking to Shkodran Mustafi who was at fault for Jamie Vardy’s goal in the match against Leicester. Nicholas Pepe too, who broke their transfer record, doesn’t fit in their starting line up having to come in from the bench. It’s as simple as play your strongest team and both these sides seem to be overthinking their tasks and selection.

Thomas Partey’s home league debut ended in defeat against Manchester City, but the former Atletico man was exceptional with a 86% pass completion rate, better stats than every other player in red. They were too slow in possession, couldn’t find gaps and didn’t take their chances in the final third with their ever vulnerable defence leaking once again. They allowed their opponents to come alive in the final twenty minutes despite being the more dominant team for most of the match.

Prediction: Manchester United win. Over 2.5. BTTS yes.

Rest of the Premier League Games

Coming up are our previews and Premier League betting tips for all the rest of the weekend’s action.

Wolves v Crystal Palace

  • Venue: Molineux Stadium
  • Saturday 30 October 20:00
  • Martin Atkinson
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 1/1 D: 21/10 A: 18/5

About the Game:

Raul Jimenez scored a stunner against Newcastle for a fourth goal in six games as Nuno Espirito’s side looked on course for a third Premier League win. They were, however, frustrated by a free kick in the dying minutes. Wolves were careless not to put the game out of reach; they had 16 shots in the game compared to just five for the visitors but had just three on target. Nuno’s side has been the best out of the rest since they came to the Premier League but have drifted from their usual standards this season. The emergence of Everton, Aston Villa, and Leeds leaves them to fight for a top-half position and look like they will struggle to keep their best players if they keep on this poor run of form.

The Eagles have had a fantastic start to the season with the form of Wilfred Zaha a great boost for the London outfit. Andros Townsend has been doing the dirty work with the highest number of tackles alongside Tyrick Mitchell with 23 each with the former managing a league-high of 9 in their previous game against Fulham. They have collected ten points in the first six beating Manchester United and Southampton, succumbing to Everton and Chelsea before drawing to Brighton at home and returning to winning ways against Fulham. Roy Hudson gameplay leaves his side vulnerable with opponents dominating them in possession in every game they have played so far playing solid at the back and exploding on the counter-attack. They can turn up and disappoint any opposition, especially now that their opponents are not looking particularly strong.

Prediction: Draw, yes to BTTS

Sheffield United v Manchester City
Sheffield United Form Guide LLWDL

  • Venue: Bramall Lane
  • Saturday 31 October 12:30
  • Referee: Michael Oliver
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 8/1 D: 47/10 A: 2/5

About the Game:

Sheffield United have never won against The Citizens and their recent form of four losses and one draw in the last five games, showing how far they have drifted from their impressive form last season. United are yet to secure their first win of the season. In their last game, they scored the first goal against the defending Champions Liverpool through Sander Berge from the penalty spot but conceded twice to lose the match. They are second bottom with just a single point but did show glimpses of the battling qualities of the side, matching the champs for periods of the game and even came close to to a stoppage-time. They now face another tough rival in Pep Guardiola who would be ruthless with mixed results for his side as well.

Man City’s Phil Foden was their saviour over the weekend against West Ham coming from the bench to equalise Michail Antonio’s marvellous opener. The youngster is their top scorer with two goals alongside Raheem Sterling who has deputising for Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus who are both struggling with injury. The Citizens have been vulnerable defensively this season with the signing of Ruben Diaz yet to accustom himself as a solid figure in the defence. Their midfield has been the strongest piece of the puzzle, anchored by Rodrigo who seems settled in the defensive role and the return of De Bruyne (who had the most assists last season) being the big news for the side going forward. They have the talent and enough grit to muscle through the Sheffield defence in what looks like a routine win.

Prediction: Man City Win Over 2.5, No to BTTS

Burnley v Chelsea

  • Venue: Turf Moor
  • Saturday 31 October 15:00
  • Referee: David Coote
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 15/8 D: 11/5 A: 12/7

About the Game:

Burnley lies eighteenth with just one point; they have the record for the highest percentage of long passes this season with 19.6%. The lack of quality recruitment and losing some of their key players in the recent transfer window is taking a toll on Sean Dyche’s side who seem to have lived their best days in the Premier League. They are a side that was playing in Europe less than two seasons ago, but they are now in the bottom three. They have Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood in their ranks who can bully out goals from crosses and set pieces even though they have not particularly great so far this season.

Chelsea has won one of the last four games in the league but has a good record at Turf Moor, winning five of their six trips. The Blues have scored four goals in each of their last two visits with Christian Pulisic netting a hat trick in the last fixture and could be in high spirits after coming back from a lengthy injury. A fixture that has not seen a goalless score at half-time is one to look out for especially with Lampard’s expensive toys all fit to play. Despite all the enormous spending on the attack, the most important acquisitions for the Blues would appear to be Thiago Silva and Eduardo Mendy who have kept a clean sheet in both matches they have featured. The man with the gloves could be the first Chelsea goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in his first three Premier League appearances for the club since Peter Cech in August 2004.

Prediction: Chelsea win. BTTS no.

Liverpool v West Ham

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Saturday 31 October 18:30
  • Referee: Kevin Friend
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 7/17 D: 9/2 A: 15/2

About the Game:

Virgil Van Dijk’s importance to the Liverpool team cannot be understated. He is the player with the most goals in the team except the front three with five goals and had previously played every single Premier League minute since signing for the club, and he could be out for the entire season. Fabinho has been deployed to fill the void in the backline and has so far been solid, conceding just once in three games in all competitions. Therefore, when the Brazilian went off around the half-hour mark of Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League win over Midtjylland, there was plenty of worried Liverpool fans. Reports suggest his injury is not as bad as first feared, but it does show the fragility of this team who were rather fortunate with injuries last season. New signing Diego Jota scored their 10,000 goals to write his name in the history books scoring the opener in the Champions League tie against FC Midtjylland after an explosive start to his career since joining from Wolves.

West Ham gave Pep Guardiola’s side a scare over the weekend with the 2018-19 Champions having to fight for a draw after Michail Antonio scored a wonderful overhead kick. The fitness of the 30-year old, who has three goals already in the first six games after managing ten in the entirety of last season will be crucial as their best attacker. David Moyes seems to have found a balance in the side playing to the teams’ strength. It has worked well for them so far, beating Wolves 4 – 0, Leicester City 3 – 0, and drawing with Tottenham 3 – 3 after coming back from three goals down.

Prediction: Liverpool tight win. Over 2.5 goals, yes to BTTS

Aston Villa v Southampton

  • Venue: Villa Park
  • Sunday 1 November 12:00
  • Referee: Darren England
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 29/20 D: 45/17 A: 28/15

About the Game:

Dean Smith named an unchanged 11 for the third consecutive game in their 3 – 0 defeat to Leeds United. Trezeguet has been impressive before the defeat starting the last 11 PL games and could lose his place to record signing Bertrand Traore. They lost a clear cut chance to top the Premier League for the first time since October 2001 and also failed to record five consecutive wins. Villa came into last Friday’s game on a perfect record for the first time since the 1930-31 season. The first goal they conceded against Leeds was the first time in nine Premier League games that Dean’s side has gone behind. Since the start of last season, Villa has lost 22 Premier League games conceding 72 goals only Norwich (27 defeats, 75 goals) has more surviving the drop by a single point.

Southampton will be full of confidence heading into this one, after being the first side to draw blood out of Everton in their 2 – 0 win. They next face another side that has had an explosive start to the season, and you would feel they could do a repeat of what they did to the toffees. James Ward-Prowse and Che Adams fired Saint up to fifth in the table in that win against the Yorkshire club. Credit must go to the Saints defence who were solid with no room to penetrate, especially in the final third, with the league’s top scorer Calvert-Lewin kept in check by Jannick Vestergaard.

Prediction: Ings to score anytime. Villa win and yes to BTTS

 Newcastle United v Everton

  • Venue: St. James’ Park
  • Sunday 01 November 14:00
  • Referee: Stuart Attwell
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 3/1 D: 13/5 A: 19/20

About the Game:

Newcastle has had an indifferent season without consistent results but will be feeling quite comfortable on eight points. They have challenged the big boys well, forcing Man United to fight for their 4 – 1 win, a scoreline that flattered the Manchester team. They managed a draw against Wolves and held Tottenham in a 1-1 draw. They next face the league leaders, who have already lost a match, and will be without Richarlison and Digne who are both suspended. Callum Wilson has been involved in six goals (four goals and two assists) in six games since making the move from Bournemouth.

Everton dropped points for the first time this season in the Merseyside derby; they then suffered their first defeat of the season in a shock 2-0 defeat to Southampton. The frustration on the pitch was evident as a Toffee’s player received a red card for the second time in a week. The first time since David Unsworth and Joseph Yobo was sent off in consecutive games over eighteen years ago. This ill-discipline could hurt Everton; this is a fixture that you feel suspended Richarlison would have had a big impact in over the weekend, cutting in from the left and being an ever-present goal threat. Everton’s loss means that this is the first season since 1967-68 that no side is unbeaten six matches in. The Toffees are still top of the league, albeit by superior goal difference ahead of their extremely noisy neighbours. They do, however, have the success story of the season so far, the incredible Dominic Calvert-Lewin who is likely to terrorise the Geordie defence.

Prediction: Everton win, BTTS yes.

Tottenham v Brighton

  • Venue: Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium
  • Sunday 1 November 19:15
  • Referee: Graham Scott
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 11/17 D: 16/5 A: 50/11

About the Game:

The resurgence of Spurs has made the London outfit among the favourites to challenge for the Premier League, especially with the drop of form by Liverpool and Man City who have set almost impossible standards in the Premier League for the last three seasons. Jose Mourinho’s side has steadily elevated fifth in the table after a hard-fought win 1 – 0 win against Burnley. Harry Kane and Heung Min Son have had a telepathic understanding with the formidable duo once again combining for the goal at Turf Moor. The two have combined for 29 goals, a tally only surpassed by the legendary partnership of Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba (36).

Brighton played so well in the 1 – 1 draw against Crystal Palace, but they took the foot off the pedal in their recent 1 – 1 draw against West Brom. They recorded fewer shots (5) than their opponents (8) which was a big drop in performance, especially after managing 20 shots in their draw against Palace. Brighton went ahead from Jake Livermore’s own goal but conceded late into the match to share the spoils. They sit 16th on five points from six games with Mattew Ryan making crucial saves to keep his side alive.

Prediction: Tottenham win, over 2.5 goals.

Fulham v West Brom
Fulham Form Guide LDDDW
West Bromwich Form Guide WWLWD
  • Venue: Craven Cottage
  • Monday 1 November 17:30
  • Referee: Simon Hooper
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 5/6 D: 31/10 A: 7/2

About the Game:

Fulham is finding the Premier League a big step up in class from the Championship, sitting bottom on a single point. Their best result so far, the draw against fellow strugglers Sheffield United. They were the top scorers in the Championship with 26 goals last season, but the previously lethal Aleksandra Mitrovic has managed just two so far. With poor service around him, these numbers are not likely to improve. They need to get results against other struggling sides to keep their chances of at least fighting for survival, but they are currently in relegation form.

Matheus Pereira scored eight goals and provided 16 assists to help West Brom gain promotion back to the Premier League and has been offered an improved contract to show the importance to the club of the 24-year old Brazilian. West Brom has not won a game yet but has three points, due to three draws. The most memorable draw being the 3 – 3 against Chelsea. A great match for the neutrals between two newly-promoted sides that would take this match seriously after facing the intensity and reality of how unforgiving the Premier League is.

Prediction: A low scoring draw, under 2.5 goals.

Leeds v Leicester City
Leeds United Form Guide DDWLL

  • Venue: Elland Road
  • Monday 1 November 21:00
  • Referee: Andre Marriner
  • Quick Glance OddsH: 13/8 D: 13/5 A: 32/19

About the Game:

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford scored a second-half hat trick against Aston Villa, making him the second player to score in Leeds’s opening three away games in a top-flight season since Gordon Hodgson in 1937. Bamford has now scored six goals in six games and has been an important factor in Marcelo Bielsa’s impressive guidance of Leeds back to the most competitive league in the world. Their win last Friday against the previously unbeaten Villa lifted Leeds briefly to the lofty heights of third, the first time they had been so high in the top league since September 2002. Leeds have scored 12 goals in six games the highest by a newly promoted side since Middlesbrough who matched this tally in the 1992-93 season.

Four years after Arsenal tried to sign Jamie Vardy to the club, he came off the bench to score a magnificent flying header to beat his former suitors 1 – 0. The former England international now has 109 Premier League goals, ahead of Peter Crouch and level with Ryan Giggs. A remarkable tally when you consider he only started playing in the Football League at 25. Such is his importance to the club, in 51 appearances he scored 39 goals, the rest of the team managed 57 in that period. With Leicester, it seems a case of no Vardy, no points. Such is his contribution. He should start this one after suffering from an injury; no-one would be surprised if the headlines are all about him on Tuesday.

Prediction: Goals a plenty in a 2-2 draw.
