Match of the Day

Arsenal welcome the visit of Manchester United in the big game on Saturday. Arsenal have had the most to cheers about recently, not suffering a loss in the last five head-to-head. They also beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford. Will they celebrate a double on Saturday night?

About the Game:

Arsenal has enjoyed a great spell against their bitter rivals, winning three and drawing two of the last five games. And in the league, Mikel Arteta’s side is on a season-best run of five wins and a draw in the last six games. In this run, they kept four consecutive clean sheets before their conceded in the 3 – 1 win against Southampton. That win against Southampton was an act of revenge after the Saints knocked them out of the FA Cup. Lack of domestic cup action could work out well for Arsenal, allowing them to focus on returning to the Champions League after missing out for three convective seasons.

Emile Smith Rowe has been the engine for his side since making his debut in their 3 – 1 win against Chelsea where their current unbeaten run started. The 20-year-old has made six starts for the Gunners and has made three assists in those games. The big team news for Arsenal is the signing of Martin Ødegaard. The 22-year-old has drawn comparisons to a young Mesut Ozil and brings creativity to the squad that was missing in the first part of the season. The youngster signed this week from Real Madrid on loan until the end of the season and could make a cameo appearance. Bakayo Saka and Lacazette both scored and assisted each other in the win against Southampton and are likely to be a threat this weekend. Alexandre Lacazette has eight goals so far with the competition for places bringing out the best in Nicholas Pepe who also scored.

Bet on Arsenal v Manchester United at 888sport

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer big gamble on rotating his side back-fired this week with an embarrassing loss 2-1 loss to bottom club Sheffield United. Sheffield United are officially the worst club by points tally at this stage of the season in Premier League history but was the better side on Wednesday night. A win would have put United back at the top of the table, but a Kean Bryan header and a deflected Oliver Burke shot gave the strugglers a vital win. United did equalise through a Harry Maguire goal, but the visitors looked the more energetic and passionate in the game, and they fully deserved the three points.

With this result in mind, it’s unlikely that Solskjaer will name anything but his strongest line-up to face one of their biggest rivals, but with several players out of form, it isn’t easy to judge what their strongest eleven is. Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial all look out of sorts and are struggling to produce performances recently. As so often this season, United’s chances in the game will most likely rest on Bruno Fernandes’ shoulders. He has been the difference so often, his eleven goals and seven assists have been vital. Another option for Ole is Edinson Cavani. Although used sparingly in the league with just four starts, his non-stop hassling of defenders and work-rate could pose Arsenal problems.

Prediction: Arsenal to win, yes, to BTTS.

About the Game:

Carlo Ancelotti has admitted he is nostalgic about Champions League action, a competition he has won twice as an AC Milan player, and three-times as a manager with Milan (twice) and Real Madrid. Everton last featured in Europe’s elite competition in 2005, but you would feel the clubs short-term and more realistic objectives would be Europa League qualification. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has an eye on the golden boot with eleven goals so far despite not scoring in the last six. Lucas Digne is their best provider on five assists. James Rodriguez’s return, who scored from twenty yards with his weak foot against Leicester in this week’s 1-1, is a big boost for the club. Everton lost a chance to get into the top-four with that draw with Leicester but with Leicester in form and challenging themselves; it was a credible draw. Four wins in the last five games show their development as one of the top sides ready to challenge at the highest level.

Newcastle are winless in eleven games in all competition; the longest Steve Bruce has gone in his career. Their best performance in this run was a 0 – 0 stalemate against Liverpool. The Magpies have earned 19 points in the last 20 games and have serious injury trouble in their defence without the services of Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett, and Ciaran Clark through injury. The poor run of form saw fans calling out for Steve Bruce head, but the Englishman is determined to turn the club’s fortunes around. They have to work on their attack having netted just two goals in the last nine games in all competitions. Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser’s availability should improve their ammunition to help their best player Callum Wilson add to his tally of eight goals and four assists. Newcastle won the first game in this fixture back in October, but their opponents are in much better form this time around.

Prediction: Everton to win. BTTS. Over 2.5 goals.

About the Game:

In so many ways this is gearing up to be a classic Roy Hodgson season. Sitting in 14th, ten points from the drop zone and ten points from 6th, Palace seem safe but, lack the ambition and results to challenge for European qualification. Wilfred Zaha is the team’s star man and has nine goals and two assists so far this campaign. Andros Townsend and James McArthur are also players to watch. New signing Jean-Phillippe Mateta is available for selection in the already crowded attack. The competition for places is expected to improve the side’s attack in dire need of consistency upfront. Their weekend opponents are the kind of banana skins they have regularly slipped on, having recorded just one win in five. They lost their mid-week game against West Ham 3-2, despite taking the lead in the third minute. They have had encouraging results though, drawing against Arsenal and Leicester and won against Sheffield United before the two consecutive defeats against Arsenal and Manchester City. They have the armoury to seek revenge after Wolves knocked them out of the FA Cup by a solitary goal in the third round.

Wolves have failed to score in fourteen Premier League games this season, a dark record only eclipsed by Sheffield united (fifteen) and Newcastle (sixteen). Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have endured a torrid time with no win in the last seven. They did, however, battle out a credible 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Wednesday. No mean feat after Chelsea had announced a new manager and we’ve soon many times how that can give teams a new manager bounce. Wolves are a position above their opponents in the league and could climb the league but struggle scoring goals. Raúl Jiménez has been out since November after suffering a fractured skull in the game with Arsenal. 20-year-old Netto is playing well, his four goals and four assists have been crucial, but he is missing his striking partner. Another factor is Adama Traore, who has so far failed to step up with no goals or assists in 1212 minutes in the league.

Prediction: A score draw.

  • Quick Glance Odds H: 2/11 D: 41/5 A: 17/1

About the Game:

A wise saying goes, slow and steady wins the race. Manchester City have been slow and steady in their resurgence under Pep Guardiola, elevating themselves to the top of the table as the record ninth side to be at the helm in this strangest of seasons. Kevin De Bruyne, who has ten assists for the side, is out injured, giving way for Ikay Gundogan, the team’s surprise top-scorer with seven goals. City have had issues keeping their strikers fit with both Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus struggling with injuries. The return of the form of John Stones has solidified their defence currently on a run of four consecutive shutouts and winning these games on an aggregate of 12 – 0. They have the credentials of going all the way and look like they will continue their form of eleven wins in a row in all competition scoring thirty goals in this run. A recent five-nil thumping of relegation struggling West Brom shows they can break down teams and don’t take struggling teams lightly.

Sheffield United recorded just their second league win of the season after a classic Chris Wilder performance to beat Manchester United 2 – 1 at Old Trafford. Still, at the bottom of the table, it cannot be stressed how important every game is for them to build on the momentum and repeat their heroics against yet another team that will start the game week at the top of the table. The manner of their 2 – 1 win against Man United showed glimpses of the Blades side we saw last season, well organised in their defence and fierce on their counter. Phil Jagielka giving a man of the match performance in this game. Before the midweek heroics, you would have expected the game against Manchester City being all about damage limitation. With United hoping to avoid a heavy defeat especially with the Sheffield club having lost the last four consecutive games and without a win in the nine encounters (winning six and drawing three) in this fixture. The win over United has changed expectations somewhat, but it isn’t easy to envisage lightning striking twice. That said, in all competitions, United have won four and lost once in the last five games.

Prediction: Manchester City to win. Over 2.5.

About the Game:

A classic relegation battle that could have serious implications on who faces the drop as the league reaches the half-way point. West Brom has conceded the most goals in Europe’s top five divisions letting in five against Manchester City in their most recent league encounter. This result means they have conceded twenty-two goals, including conceding five goals in three different games since Big Sam took over. Sam Allardyce was furious with the City result, keeping his team in the dressing room for over an hour and will be hoping the message sticks before they face fellow strugglers Fulham. It will be hard to motivate a side that has lost the last five consecutive home games, but they will undertand the circumstances of what a defeat at home would mean to their survival. Matheus Felipe Costa Pereira, who has four goals and three assists, has the best numbers for either side will be the man to watch.

It was just six weeks since the relegation struggling side drew 0 – 0 against Pep Guardiola’s side when Sam Johnstone in the Fulham goal gave a man-of-the-match display. Ola Aina received the goal-of-the-month for his goal when the two teams met in the reverse fixture, his Beckamesque shot from inside his own half was a wonder goal and helped Fulham to a 2-0 win over this weekend’s opponents. Three wins and two draws in the last five gives over West Brom gives them confidence for this clash. Ademola Lookman has been a breath of fresh air in the Fulham squad with three goals and three assists showing a big improvement in his game. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is another player to watch, the 25-year-old is playing well and has three assists from a defensive midfield position.

Prediction: A draw.

About the Game:

Southampton scored first against Arsenal but couldn’t withstand the pressure and loss 3 – 1 in the end in the midweek game. The Stuttering Saints had an impressive first half of the season with a healthy twenty-nine points, but recent form has dropped with one win in seven games in the league. A positive for Southampton is that they are well-organised at the back normally, they have kept five clean sheets in their last seven games in all competitions, including the 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round win against Arsenal. The Saints are also not lacking in creativity, James Ward-Prowse has made five assists this season, making him level with Dusan Tadic in second place for the most assists in club history. Matt Le Tissier has the record on sixty-three, but at 26, time is on his side. Ward-Prowse also has goals in his game, a free-kick specialist who already has four this season, putting him with equal with Che Adams and behind just Danny Ings on seven in the league. The Saints have won the last four league games in this fixture and will be favourites, especially at their home. Danny Ings has not scored in the last eight games and will be desperate to score here.

Ollie Watkins has scored in successive games after a dry spell of nine. His tally of eight goals in eighteen appearances is the same total as Aston Villa’s top scorer achieved in the entire season. The frustration for Villa and betting fans is that despite a great team, they are so unpredictable. They started the season on fire, winning the first four, including the 7-2 win against champions Liverpool. The next game after Liverpool, they lost 3-0 to Leeds. Recent form has been poor, losses to Manchester United, Manchester City and more tellingly, 3-2 against Burnley this week. However, it is worth mentioning that they did have forty-five shots in the loss and conceded two goals in the last fourteen minutes. Jack Grealish has been involved in fourteen goals in eighteen appearances, as many as he achieved in the entirety of last season. Ollie Watkins is the club’s leading scorer, with eight goals and two assists.

Prediction: James Ward-Prowse to score at anytime.

About the Game:

The main talking point this week in football was the sacking of Frank Lampard at Chelsea. The hierarchy deciding that performances in the league were not showing signs of improvement. Thomas Tuchel was the man chosen to unite the dressing room and get results on the pitch. His first game in charge was against Wolves with the German showing he is full of surprises with team selection, playing Callum Hudson-Odoi at right-wing-back was a decision no-one saw coming. The game against Wolves ended 0-0 and while they were by far the more attacking team with fourteen efforts on goal, a combination of poor finishing and a good performance by Rui Patrício in goal for Wolves meant the match ended in a stalemate. A positive from the game is the clean sheet; the Blues conceded seventy-seven goals in fifty-seven goals under their former man in charge. This fixture is the perfect game for Tuchel to get his first win, Chelsea have won five of their last six matches against Burnley in all competitions.

Burnley has won three consecutive wins in all competition, including back to back league games for the first time this season, but the biggest talking point about Burnley is their great 1-0 at Anfield. Liverpool had not suffered defeat at home for 68-games but an Ashley Barnes penalty the 83rd minute ended that proud run for the home side. However, Liverpool shouldn’t have been that surprised; they won 18 out of 19 league games last season, the only points dropped was in a 1-1 draw against Burnley. Burnley are notorious for disappointing the heavyweights with their organisation in defence, but like many teams around them in the bottom half, it is goals that are the issue. Top scorer Chris Woods only has four, but even that total is double the next best (Ashley Barnes and Ben Mee on Two). Even assists are thin on the ground with Ashley Westwood and Dwight McLeod having the best numbers with just two each.

Prediction: James Ward-Prowse to score at anytime.

About the Game:

The Foxes show a great appetite for Champions League football with a hard-fought 1 – 1 draw against Everton, who have top-four ambitions themselves. However, they will be disappointed not to have picked up all three points after being the more attacking side and had nineteen shots on goal compared to Everton’s eight. Losing top-scorer Jamie Vardy is a blow, the 34-year-old has eleven goals but will be unavailable for another week or so through injury. Luckily for Leicester, they have plenty of goals in midfield. Harvey Barnes has six goals, James Maddison also has six. Youri Tielemans is just one goal behind on five, but like Vardy, he is injured, and a thigh injury means he is unlikely to be risked. They are third two points behind Man City extending their unbeaten run to nine games and before the draw had won five games in a row.

Leeds United bounced back from two consecutive defeats (where they failed to score in each) to beat Newcastle 2 – 1 on Tuesday. Yet, it was far from a typical Leeds United performance that we have enjoyed this season despite the win. Marcelo Bielsa’s men are usually the aggressors, but it was the Magpies who dominated the chances, creating eleven in open play and eleven through set-pieces. Leeds took two of their nine chances and took the three points and into twelfth place. Diego Llorente’s injury woes continue after lasting just ten minutes in his full debut against Newcastle; Pascal Struijk is likely to replace him.

Prediction: Leicester City win. Over 2.5

West Ham Vs Liverpool

  • Venue: London Stadium
  • Sunday 31 January 16:30

About the Game:

West Ham has won six in a row in all competitions, and David Moyes has made it clear his aspirations to manage a side in the Champions League. While that may sound an impossible dream, the transformation at West Ham this season is incredible. The Hammers only escaped relegation by five points last campaign and were one of the favourites for the drop, but currently are fifth, two points behind Liverpool in fourth. Tomas Soucek is one reason for this uptick, allegedly a defensive-minded midfielder; the 25-year-old has seven goals in the league. Soucek is the second-best scoring midfielder with ten goals in all competitions; a record only eclipsed by maestro Bruno Fernandes with nineteen goals. Also instrumental has been Michail Antonio, Declan Rice and Vladimir Coufal, all three are in great form.

The defending Champions lost 3-2 in the FA Cup against bitter rivals Manchester United but bounced back with a morale-boosting 3-1 win away at Tottenham last night. Klopp has challenged anyone who has a centre-half at a reasonable price and has the quality he needs to send him a text. Still, despite Klopp’s tongue-in-cheek comment, Liverpool are running out of players, especially in defence. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been out with injuries long-term, forcing Fabinho to play in defence. Fabinho has picked up an injury, and Joel Mitip is also out with an ankle ligament injury described as “something serious”. Perhaps this lack of confidence in the defence has led to Liverpool’s poor form of two wins in eight games in all competitions; the forwards asked to perform a more defensive role. Diogo Jota started the season on a high note, deputising for the front three after netting five in the first eight but he too is sidelined with an injury. Mohammed Salah is the top scorer with thirteen goals so far. Sadio Mane is having a slow season with seven goals but scored in the win at Spurs. Despite recent troubles, Liverpool are fourth, four points behind Manchester City.

Prediction: Liverpool win, BTTS.

Brighton Vs Tottenham Hotspurs
Brighton Form Guide DDWLL

  • Venue: AMEX Stadium
  • Sunday 31 January 19:15
  • Referee: Peter Bankes
  • Quick Glance Odds H: 11/5 D:12/5 A: 5/4

About the Game:

Brighton is on an incredible fourteen game winless run on the South coast at home and is the main reason why they are sitting in seventeenth place. All three Brighton wins have come on the road against Newcastle (3-0), Aston Villa (2-1) and most recently Leeds 1-0 mid-January. They drew 0-0 mid-week against Brighton. Before that win at Leeds, the Seagulls had endured a nine-game winless run. Neal Maupay has been their best player with seven goals in eighteen appearances, if he doesn’t score Brighton tend to struggle as no player other than Maupay has scored more than two goals. Brighton are underdogs, but supporters will be praying for a repeat of the 3-0 win they had against Tottenham when they last visited the AMEX.

Harry Kane is having a transformational season not only with twelve goals but also discovering his creative side with eleven assists this season but is now sidelined with an injury picked up in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool this week. The England captain joins Giovani Lo Celso, Bamidele Alli and Sergio Reguilon on the sidelines. Tottenham were toothless in their loss against the champions, just three attempts on goal; two from Son Heung-Min and one from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. Liverpool’s Sadio Mane had seven alone. Tottenham should win this one, but they are not in great form, wins against Sheffield United (3-1) and Leeds (1-0) the only wins in eight.

Prediction: Tottenham narrow win.
